LORMAN, Mississippi | Southern University Jaguars' Lauryn McKinney took the game over, scoring two goals at the 73rd-minute and the 78th-minute mark to defeat the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University Friday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium, 2-1.
In the first half, Southern's Faith Sparks struck first for the Jaguars putting them on the board 1-0 off of a Tiffany White corner kick.
Alcorn State trailed 1-0 in the 44th minute when they tied the game on their first goal of conference play. Alcorn's Yaira Guardado got the play started with a through-ball to sophomore Mireya Gonzalez who took a few dribbles and fired it past a charging goalkeeper to make it 1-1 at intermission.
The Jaguars outshot Alcorn in the first half and came back in the second half much stronger.
Coach Jeremy said, “Finishing in the second half was a team effort.”
Lauren McKinney came back into the second half on fire. The next two goals from Southern were hers. “Her confidence is starting to build and hopefully it does next game also,” Coach Jeremy said when asked about McKinney. McKinney has scored three goals in two games.
Chioma Eriken added nine saves to her nation-leading 132 saves with .841 saving percentage.
The Jaguars move up to 7th in SWAC with 2-4-1 as their record. Jaguars will end their Mississippi road trip as they head to Itta Bena to take on the Lady Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tilt.
