MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Jackson State football team used a suffocating defense and opportunistic offense to defeat Alabama State 20-2 Saturday afternoon in an important Southwestern Athletic Conference tilt.
The Tigers (5-4, 3-2 SWAC) held the Hornets (3-6, 2-3 SWAC) to 180 yards of total defense.
JSU jumped out to an early 10-0 first quarter lead. Christian Jacquemin converted a 39-yard field goal at 2:25 in the quarter and on the ensuing possession Ryan Theyard returned an interception back to the house.
With 24 seconds remaining in the first half, quarterback Jarrad Hayes found running back Keshawn Harper on a wheel out of the backfield and JSU went into halftime with a 17-0 lead.
Jacquemin added a second field goal at 10:23 in the fourth quarter and JSU extended its lead to 20-0.
Harper rushed for 76 yards and had two receptions for 17 yards and Quitten Brown totaled 66 yards on 23 carries.

Hayes passed 12-of-28 for 130 yards and one touchdown pass.
Speedster Romello Shumake grabbed three passes for 70 yards.
Keontre Hampton totaled seven tackles, including one sack and two tackles for a loss. Khalil Johnson added sick tackles, which two were sacks and three tackles for loss.
JSU returns to action on Saturday for the SWAC East Division crown and a berth in the SWAC championship game versus That School from Lorman. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
