Curtis all-state selection signs with Gold Nuggets

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana women's basketball signed Abryhia Irons of Boutte, La., and John Curtis Christian School to an athletic scholarship Wednesday.

Irons was second-team Class 5A All-State in 2018-19. She averaged 15 points, 8.3 rebounds, four assists and two steals per game this past season and was chosen to the 15-member NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune All-Metro team.

Curtis, located in the New Orleans suburb of River Ridge, won its third consecutive LHSAA Division I state championship March 2 and finished the season 29-4.

Irons, who made the honor roll multiple times at Curtis, will be a biology / pre-medical major at XULA. Her goal is to become an orthopedic surgeon.

"Abryhia Irons can do it all. She's versatile and can play both sides of the floor," XULA head coach Bo Browder said. "She has the heart of a champion. She's an outstanding student-athlete who can play multiple positions. She compares favorably as a defender to Mikayla Bates, who was one of our best defensive players of the last 15 years. Abryhia's offensive skills are just as good as her defensive skills, and that's why we recruited her."

Irons will be one of two Curtis alums on the Gold Nuggets' roster next season. She'll join Da'Jha Virgil, who averaged 4.6 points in 30 games with 18 starts as a freshman guard this past season.

The Gold Nuggets finished 23-8 in 2018-19, won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular-season championship, ranked 24th in the final coaches poll and earned an at-large bid to the NAIA Division I National Championship tournament.
