Bowie grounds Chowan Hawks 59-19 to close out season

Budd and Johnson Set or Tie BSU Records

MURFREESBORO, N.C.- Bowie State rolled up a season-high 582 yards of total offense, crushing Chowan University 59-19. However, due to Virginia State's victory over Saint Paul's, Bowie State wraps up their season with a record of 6-4 overall and 6-1 in the CIAA. The 6-1 conference record is teams best since 1989.

Senior Rodney Webb capped-off a 7-play, 63 yard opening game drive with a 16-yard touchdown run. Junior Michael Gagne added the extra point for an early 7-0 lead. Chowan answered with a Ryan Simpson to Elliot Smalls� 17-yard pass and catch to pull within 7-6 at the 2:29 mark of the first quarter.

Gagne booted a 26-yard field with 10:52 remaining in the second quarter to give BSU Bulldogs a 10-6 advantage. Junior Clifton Budd connected on a 57-yard passing touchdown to senior Derrick McPhearson. Gagne's extra point extended the Bowie State lead to 17-6 with 55 seconds left in the first half.

Chowan's Smalls pounded in from one-yard out on the Hawks opening drive of the third quarter to cut the Bowie State lead to 17-12. Senior Gregory Jackson hauled in a 24-yard touchdown pass from Budd, doubling up the Hawks by the score of 24-12.

Bowie State padded their lead at the 14:40 mark of the fourth quarter, after senior Troy Gibson rushed up the middle for a four yard score and a 31-12 cushion. Senior Anthony Green caught his first touchdown pass of the season, scoring from 31 yards out, increasing the Bulldogs lead to 38-12.

Senior strong safety Sterling Grant Jones was given the pigskin at the 7:52 mark of the final period, rushing for his first career touchdown from four yards out. Gagne extra point made the score 45-12 Bulldogs.

Sophomore Ramono Flowers recorded his third touchdown of the year, rumbling 24-yards for six more Bulldogs points. Freshman Gregory Koepping converted the extra point, giving Bowie State a 52-12 stronghold.

Chowan's Eddie Coard caught an eight yards pass from Simpson with 2:32 left in the season and Ryan Murphy added the extra point, but the deficit was too big at this point.

Budd flipped a 28 yard pass to junior Seth Minter with 38 seconds remaining in the contest and Gagne added the extra point to close out the game.

Budd completed 15-of-25 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns. Budd's four passing touchdowns tied the season-record for the second time this season. Webb tied his season-high of 20 carries and rushed for a season-high 103 yards. Senior Derrick McPhearson wrapped up his brief Bulldogs career with a game-high 107 reception yards on five catches.

Budd set a new school record for passing yards in a season with 1,538. The old season mark of 1,462 was set by Jimmy Whitehead (1999).

Defensively, the Bulldogs were led by senior Terence Peete with a team-high eight tackles. Junior Delano Johnson along with seniors Gregory Jackson and Sterling Grant-Jones added six tackles each. Johnson also had two blocked kicks, giving him six for the season, tying a BSU record (Robert Zachery 1990).

Simpson led Chowan's offense with 240 passing yards, completing 22-of-38 passes and one touchdown, but was sacked five times and intercepted once.

Jason Ampy paced the Hawks defense with eight tackles and Gatlin Williams and Venel Hippolyte added a half dozen tackles apiece.

Chowan closes out the year with an overall record of 3-7 and 3-5 in the CIAA.

BSU Bulldogs Win on Senior Day, 20-12 over ECSU

The Bowie State Bulldogs (5-4 overall, 5-1 CIAA) on Senior day found a way despite giving up 500 yards in total offense and not scoring in the second half to defeat Elizabeth State (4-4 overall, 3-2 CIAA), 20-12. The win gives the Bulldogs a fighting chance of earning a CIAA championship birth with two weeks remaining in the season.

"The guys played for the seniors today and they played a good game," said coach Damon Wilson. "This is a good Elizabeth City team." "The guys fought for four quarters and found a way to win the ballgame, so it was great to finish our home stretch with a W."

The Bulldogs won the game because of three things: on offense, they were efficient and ran the ball successfully; on defense, they were able to create three turnovers when Elizabeth City was within a yard of the end zone; and finally, special teams was fantastic creating two touchdowns.

BSU Bulldogs Outlast LU Lions on Homecoming, 24-18

Despite a plethora of offensive errors, Bulldogs find way to finish.

The Bowie State University Bulldogs (4-4 overall, 4-1 CIAA) had to grind out a valuable homecoming victory against conference opponent Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (1-6 overall, 0-4 CIAA), 24-18. The victory came despite several turnovers on offense and not having a lead until early in the fourth quarter.

This game was not for the feint of heart. For all the ambiance of a homecoming game, it was a very scrappy affair marred with turnovers galore for both teams, but in the end Bowie State was able to make more big plays.

Bowie State Breaks in New Turf with 28-27 Win over Virginia Union

Bowie, Md. - The Bowie State University (BSU) Bulldogs wasted no time breaking in their brand new home field Saturday as they edged Virginia Union University (VUU), 28-27, in their first home game since switching from grass to synthetic turf.

Bulldogs junior Clifton Budd set two school passing records as Bowie State advanced to a 2-3 overall record, 2-0 Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) wise. Budd completed 32 of 51 passes for 355 yards and three touchdowns. His 32 completions and 355 yards broke an 18-year-old BSU record set by Arthur Lee who held the mark at 24 completions and 324 passing yards.

The Bulldogs led, 15-13, at halftime, but struggled in the third quarter, allowing VUU to take a 27-15 lead late in the third quarter. But BSU managed a comeback with two touchdown strikes from Budd, an 18-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Reginald McIntyre and a 39-yard touchdown strike to senior Gregory Jackson.

Bowie State hoops loads up on Baltimore talent

Darrell Brooks got off to a good start as Bowie State’s men’s basketball coach in his first year back at his alma mater.

The longtime George Washington assistant guided the Bulldogs to a 16-10 record last season. This year, he’ll attempt to better that mark with the help of a few former Baltimore City high school stars.

Brooks has added four Baltimore natives to the Bulldogs’ roster for the 2010-11 season: Trawn Rogers, a 6-foot-8, 185-pound forward from St. Frances, Byron Westmoreland, a 6-foot-3, 175-pound shooting guard from Mervo, Julian Harrell, a 6-foot point guard from Good Counsel, and Tyrone Lawson, a 6-foot-8, 220-pound forward from Northwestern.

Bowie State Names Goff New Athletic Director

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University named Anton Goff as the institution's new director of athletics, effective October 1. Goff, formerly associate director for the Academic Support and Career Development Unit (ASCDU) at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP), served in collegiate athletics administration for the past 15 years.

A press conference at Bowie State is scheduled for Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at 3 p.m. The event's location is the Thurgood Marshall Library in the Special Collections Room on the second floor.

Goff succeeds interim athletic director Arlene Creek, an alumna who has been associated with Bowie State for over 30 years.

At UMCP, Goff focused on leading the Terps' academic support unit in providing quality developmental programs and need-based services that enhanced academic progress, facilitated career development and encouraged the psychosocial growth of all student-athletes.

"Mr. Goff brings an array of experiences that are certain to enhance the athletic programs at Bowie State University," said Mickey L. Burnim, president of Bowie State University. "His credentials are impressive and we are indeed delighted he is joining BSU to help lead an already thriving Division II program to the next level of excellence."

At Bowie State, Goff will oversee its 13 men's and women's athletic teams, which are part of the NCAA Division II Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Goff will take on the role soon after Bowie State unveils its new artificial turf at Bulldog Stadium on September 25 at the first home football game versus Virginia Union University.

It is a great day to be a Bulldog," stated Anton Goff. "This is a tremendous opportunity for me professionally and personally. My goals and values mirror those of BSU and I am looking forward to leading the Athletic Department in pursuit of academic and athletic excellence as well as community participation. I am honored to be placed in this leadership position. My family and I are excited to become contributing members of the Bowie State University community."

Goff served as the sport supervisor and administrator at UMCP for six of its 27 varsity sports (men's and women's track and field program), while overseeing the program's yearly budget. He managed the areas of student services, academic support, community service, and life skills for all 27 varsity sports and 700 student-athletes.

While at Michigan State University, Goff served as the academic coordinator for the Spartan football team, where he was responsible for tracking the student-athletes' classroom efforts and monitoring progress toward their degrees in compliance with NCAA and Big Ten regulations. Goff was responsible for overseeing the tutoring programs and study table at MSU and coordinated a faculty/staff mentorship program. Goff supervised four full-time academic counselors/learning specialists, graduate students and several undergraduate tutors.

Prior to his tenure at MSU, Goff provided academic support for Maryland men's basketball, men's and women's track, men's and women's soccer and softball programs from 1998 to 2001. During his first stint in College Park, Goff was instrumental in the development of the Terrapin Student-Athlete Handbook and the implementation of educational programs concerning alcohol and drug abuse, academic integrity, gender violence and human diversity.

He completed the NCAA Leadership Institute and is a member of several associations and societies including the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, the African American Scholars Honor Society, the Golden Key National Honors Society, the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated.

Goff earned a bachelor's degree in the administration of justice from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 1991, before receiving a master's degree in the same discipline from VCU two years later. He completed all of the requirements, excluding the dissertation (ABD), for a doctorate degree from Kent State University in Education Administration with a concentration in Sports Administration. He lives in Bowie with his wife and two daughters.

With strong defense, field goals, Morgan State beats Bowie State 14-7

Many of the problems that hindered Morgan State's offense last season carried over Saturday in its season opener against Division II Bowie State.

The defense, however, showed vast improvement, forcing five turnovers, and paved the way for a 14-7 victory before an announced 7,419 at Hughes Stadium. The Bears will have little time to savor the win as they must get ready to play Saturday at Maryland for the first time in program history.

"We have a lot of new faces on the defense," coach Donald Hill-Eley "They played well together against a team that had a game to play before us. They looked sharp. Our defense had some three-and-outs and we held them until we could get something going on offense."

After three separate recruiting campaigns over the span of nearly five years, Morgan State football coach Donald Hill-Eley finally has his man. Now, running back Jourdan Brooks is out to prove the wait was worth it. Once considered by many to be Ray Rice's heir apparent at Rutgers, the redshirt junior transferred to Morgan during this past offseason in search of a starting job. Hill was happy to oblige.

"He finally came on the third try," said Hill-Eley, who twice recruited Brooks out of Seneca Valley High as a linebacker. Running back, however, is where Brooks made his mark with the Scarlet Knights, racking up nearly 800 yards and 10 touchdowns in his two seasons in the Big East, including three 100-yard games.

Bowie State has game of missed opportunities

The Bowie State University football team began its season by falling behind Seton Hill University early and failing to capitalize on multiple opportunities deep in Griffins' territory in a 20-14 loss on Saturday in Greensburg, Pa. The Bulldogs outgained Seton Hill, 313-242, but the Bulldogs were done in by their inability to score in the red zone.

Bowie State's first possession ended with a 30-yard loss on a fourth-down play from its own 37-yard line. Seton Hill quickly took advantage, using two plays to punch the ball into the end zone on a 4-yard run by R.J. Butler. On their second possession, the Bulldogs drove from their 41-yard line to the Seton Hill 2, but kicker Michael Gagne's 20-yard field goal attempt hit the right goalpost, keeping Bowie State scoreless.

Bowie State primed for title run

Much talent returns from team that lost in 2009 CIAA final

Bowie, Md. - On many fronts, the 2009 season was a success for the Bowie State University football team. First-year coach Damon Wilson took over the program in April 2009 and guided the team to a 6-5 record, including a 5-2 mark in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The Bulldogs won five in a row at one point and made it to the CIAA championship game. But they ended the season on a three-game losing streak, including a 21-10 decision against Fayetteville State University in the CIAA final.

"We certainly don't want to pick up where we left off, losing three in a row," Wilson said. As a result, Wilson said the team's motto for this season is to "finish what we started."

The Bulldogs have a good chance of finishing with a CIAA crown this year, given their wealth of returning talent. Eight starters from 2009 return on offense, and the defense returns nine starters from a unit that led all 148 NCAA Division II teams in total defense, allowing an average of 217 yards per game.

Bowie State Upgrading Football Field With Synthetic Turf

BOWIE, MD - Bowie State University Interim Athletic Director Arlene Creek and head football coach Damon Wilson officially announce that the Bulldogs football stadium natural grass field will be resurfaced with a $1 million synthetic turf.

Bowie State will be the second school in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association to shift from natural grass. Fayetteville State converted to a synthetic surface in 2007.

"I am very pleased and happy to be getting FieldTurf. This will give Bowie State University a great opportunity for more exposure, and I do believe that it will capture the attention of various teams wanting to play their games in Bulldogs Stadium”, said Creek.

The new surface will be made of the new grass-looking synthetic surface that is currently used by 20 NFL teams as well as over 50 NCAA Division I institutions. The patented FieldTurf infill is comprised of 70 percent silica sand and 30 percent cryogenic rubber. In addition to intercollegiate football, Creek said the new field can be used for soccer, lacrosse, intramural games, band performances and graduations -- without damage to the surface. Also, she hopes community organizations will want to use the field for a fee.

“This is a great step for Bowie State”, said Wilson. Wilson went on to say, “I thank Dr. Burnim and his administration for spearheading this project. This new field surface also gives us the opportunity to generate additional revenue by hosting camps and clinics in our facility.”

Construction has already begun and will completed in time for the BSU Bulldogs home opener versus the Panthers of Virginia Union University – Saturday, September 25th at 1 pm.

Milwaukee's Fresh Coast Classic Announces 2010 Participants

Milwaukee, WI – The Fresh Coast Classic Basketball Tournament announced that the following Historically Black Colleges and Universities will participate in the 2010 basketball tournament:

Bowie State University (Bowie, MD), Clark-Atlanta University (Atlanta, GA), Johnson C. Smith University (Charlotte, NC) and Saint Paul's College (Lawrenceville, VA) will compete for this year’s championship title.

Scheduled to take place in Milwaukee at Wisconsin Lutheran College, 8800 West Bluemound Road, November 26-27, the Fresh Coast Classic is far more than a basketball game; it’s an unforgettable experience that brings the legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to Milwaukee.

This year’s event will feature four HBCUs playing in four games over a 2-day period with 2009 Fresh Coast Champions, Clark-Atlanta University, defending its title. The four HBCU teams will participate in semifinal games on Friday, November 26 with the championship and consolation games taking place Saturday, November 27.

“We are excited about the outstanding match ups for this year’s Fresh Coast Classic basketball tournament,” said Harold Scott, Chairman of the Fresh Coast Classic. “This is the fourth year of the tournament and we believe this year is going to be the best one yet. The Fresh Coast Classic is gaining momentum and has proven to be more than a basketball tournament; it’s a celebration of our country’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities that commemorates academic achievement, tradition and sportsmanship. It’s a weekend filled with something for everyone.”

Traditionally, the Fresh Coast Classic has been an HBCU Classic, but this year’s event will expand to include eight area high school games that will follow the City/Suburban Holiday Classic format, in which a Milwaukee City Conference school will be paired against a Milwaukee area suburban school.

In addition, back by popular demand, the Fresh Coast Classic College & Resource Fair will provide Milwaukee youth and families the opportunity to explore the many educational options at HBCUs throughout the United States. Six Bowie State Bulldogs Selected To Pre-Season All-CIAA Squad

Bowie, MD - The 2010 CIAA Predicted Order of Finish and Preseason All-CIAA Team were announced at the annual Football Kick-Off Press Conference held Thursday morning at Jones Dining Hall on the campus of Virginia State University. The Order of Finish and Preseason All-CIAA Team are voted on by the CIAA Football Coaches Association.

The Bulldogs, who finished at 6-5 overall in 2009 and in a three-way tie in the Division (5-2), were picked to finish third overall out of the 13 CIAA teams.

Six BSU student-athletes received preseason honors; Seniors Terence Peete, Jr. (Memphis, TN, Northwest) (Defensive Back), Alexander Payton (Rockville, MD, Richard Montgomery) (Defensive Line), Rodney Webb (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy) (Running Back), juniors Reginald Berry (Washington, DC, James Madison Univ.) (Offensive Line), James Proctor, Jr. (Capital Heights, MD, Suitland) (Kick Returner) and Clifton Budd (Silver Spring, MD, Sherwood) (Punt Returner).

The Bulldogs will kick off the season on August 28th on the road against Seton Hill University, in Greensburg, PA.

The Bulldogs junior defensive back Kenneth Turner was named to Lindy's Pre-Season Division II All-America Second Team. Turner, from Oxon Hill High School, Oxon Hill, Maryland was a member of the 2009 All-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) Defensive Second Team. Tuner topped the CIAA in Passes Defended (14), tied for third in conference interceptions (5) and ranked sixth on the team in total tackles (32).

Coaches poll puts Lincoln University last in CIAA

The Lions, having transitioned to NCAA Division II, will begin their football season Sept. 5.

Lincoln University is projected to become the new cellar dweller of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. In their first season back as full CIAA members, the Lions were picked to finish seventh in the seven-team Northern Division in the conference coaches' preseason poll. They also were picked to finish last overall in the 13-team league.

Fayetteville State was picked to win the conference championship and Southern Division title during Thursday's CIAA Media Day at Virginia State. Bowie State was selected to win the Northern title. In addition to being picked last, Lincoln didn't have a player named to the all-CIAA preseason team that was selected by the conference's coaches and sports information directors.

But . . . "We should definitely be able to compete with the majority of the teams in the conference," said Lincoln coach O.J. Abanishe, whose squad returns 19 starters - 10 defensive and nine offensive - from last season's 3-7 squad. This season has special meaning for the Lions.
