CLEMSON, S.C. - Coming off of a week in which she was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, Jaleesa Sams recorded eight steals Monday night against Clemson, but the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team fell just short of an upset with a 77-71 loss to the Tigers at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Sams also scored 22 points and collected eight rebounds for the Aggies (4-7). Jaquayla Berry added 15 points. Sams needs just one point to reach 1,000 points for her career.
N.C. A&T trailed by six early in the second half. But Berry's layup with 7:53 to play moved the Aggies to within one at 56-55. The Tigers began to pull away as they scored the next seven points to take an eight-point lead.

Clemson Cruises Past Delaware State, 76-41
Jerai Grant scored 15 points to lead a balanced Clemson attack Monday night as the Tigers cruised past Delaware State 76-41.

Grant scored 15 while also dishing out five assists while Milton Jennings added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Delaware State trailed 12-11 with 12 minutes left in the first half before the Tigers responded with an 18-0 run over the next five minutes of play.
“It was a really good win for our guys. I thought we played really efficient basketball," head coach Brad Brownell said afterwards. "I talked to our team about playing with basketball sureness tonight—making the extra pass, sharing the ball, being strong, meeting passes, and limiting turnovers.
"We were facing a team that plays a bunch of different defenses and tries to make you get out of rhythm. They go trap at different times. I think our guys showed good poise.”

Clemson routs overmatched S.C. State, 54-0
Final Stats Photo Gallery
CLEMSON, S.C. — A tired-looking Vic Koening met with reporters earlier this week, explaining that his lack of sleep was due to anxiety over facing South Carolina State. Clemson’s defensive coordinator and his fellow coaches pushed the right buttons with their players as the Tigers matched the underdog Bulldogs’ intensity Saturday. Early in the second half it was most of those in attendance at Death Valley stifling yawns during No. 23 Clemson’s 54-0 win.
“We did what we needed to do,” head coach Tommy Bowden said. “We were focused and played with a lot of energy, and that’s all we can ask for right now from the players.” Clemson’s coaching strategy was to preach all week that S.C. State featured many players who had been recruited by the Tigers and the talent level was not to be taken lightly. “I think Coach Koenning did (over-hype the Bulldogs),” senior safety Michael Hamlin said. “That’s any coach’s job, to blow them up bigger than they really are. He told us how good they were and really opened everybody’s eyes up.”
S.C. State head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough has been stomped 143-6 in four "practices" with Clemson, Central Florida, South Carolina and Air Force Academy the past two seasons. Should SCSU spare themselves and their fans the embarrassment and cancel the Georgia Tech game for '09, as the Bulldogs have proven they are not competitive with middle of the pack FCS and FBS teams? Clearly the Bulldogs are pretenders and are guilty of being over-hyped by their AD and SID.

SCSU's Long, Clemson's Korn have a past coming into the present
Malcolm Long would rather focus on the present and future with South Carolina State rather than the past. Yet to Upstate football fans, he remains well-known as the quarterback who led Gaffney High School to back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006 and victories in three of four high-profile games against state powerhouse J.F. Byrnes and former starting quarterback Willy Korn.
S.C. State QB Malcolm Long.
The rivalry between the two championship rich programs, as well the high-profile coverage given to the games (the 2006 regular-season game was aired nationally by Fox Sports) would forever link the “Mr. South Carolina Football” and Parade All-American. It also forged a level of mutual respect and friendship between Korn and Long which continues to this day. “Out of all the guys that I played against in high school, he’s definitely by far the best quarterback I went against,” Korn said.

SCSU Pough doesn’t want momentum derailed by Clemson Tigers
Orangeburg, S.C. -- In hindsight, South Carolina State head football coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough probably would have scheduled a different opponent. With the Bulldogs showing progress in their two straight victories, the last thing Pough wants to see is his team demoralized by a Football Bowl Subdivision team. Such a possibility exists in Pough’s mind with a Clemson University team he sees as a talent “mismatch” for S.C. State.
South Carolina State University head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough is the MEAC favorite to win the '08 conference title and automatic FCS playoff berth.
“The problem is they are in a bad spot for us,” Pough said Monday. “We’re starting to really build some momentum and it’s kind of a downer deal with this issue. I really want to go out and beat the starch out of somebody this week to really kind of keep us going. The last thing I’m looking for is to go into a situation as a double-digit underdog and that’s what we’ll be. Not only does Pough see the game as a difficult match up from a personnel standpoint, but an emotional one.

(Clemson) Tigers welcome break in schedule (SCSU)
Another lower-division foe will give wounded Clemson a chance to work out more of its kinks
BULLDOGS AT TIGERS
WHO: S.C. State (2-1) at Clemson (2-1)
WHEN: 1 p.m. Saturday
WHERE: Memorial Stadium, Clemson

RADIO: ESPN Radio 93.1 FM

CLEMSON, S.C. — The past two weeks, coach Tommy Bowden intended to take the ball if Clemson won the coin toss. Bowden traditionally has deferred, but with the new 40-second-clock rule, he figures the Tigers could gain an additional offensive series.
Clemson’s opponents have won the toss both times, however, so Bowden has yet to test his theory. However, he has a favorable schedule for another couple of weeks in which to squeeze in a few extra reps for his numerous newcomers.
“I’m glad we’ll have had three out-of-conference games before we’ll get into conference the rest of the way,” Bowden said. “It has really helped ... with the injuries we’ve had.” Clemson (2-1), which opened ACC play with a 28-9 win Saturday against N.C. State, faces a Football Championship Subdivision team for the second time with this week’s home game against South Carolina State. The Tigers thumped The Citadel 45-17 two weeks ago. This three-week stretch came at the perfect time.

Sneak Peek: Clemson vs S.C. State Football
Photo: Running back Will Ford will be tough to stop by opponents in 2008, including Clemson and Central Florida.
S.C. State offense vs. Clemson defense
The Bulldogs have put up some impressive offensive numbers under sixth-year coach Buddy Pough. A big reason this team is knocking on the door to its first playoff trip in over two decades is an offense that's considered among the best in the MEAC. The Bulldogs finished second in scoring offense last year, averaging 26.7 points per game. They averaged 264 yards rushing per game, and all-conference tailback Will Ford returns.
At quarterback, S.C. State will enter the season with a quarterback battle between Malcolm Long and DeWain Clark. Long was Cleve McCoy's backup last season, but Clark's performance in the spring game (21-of-27 passing, 160 yards, two touchdowns) demonstrated that Long won't secure the starting spot easily. Ford will have some company — and competition — in the backfield. Tailback Anthony Campbell, a transfer from Auburn, had 15 carries for 133 yards in the spring game.
