Savannah, GA - Savannah State University President Cheryl Dozier is making a change in leadership in the Athletics Department. Today, Dozier announced the appointment of an interim director of athletics and a national search to select the next SSU athletics director.

“I have appointed Horace Broadnax to serve as interim athletics director,” Dozier said.
“Mr. Broadnax is currently our head basketball coach, a position he has held since coming to SSU in 2005. His proven leadership as director of our successful men’s basketball program and his commitment to team building are assets SSU will need as it begins a national search for a director of athletics. Broadnax brings many years’ experience in Division I athletics as an athlete and coach. He has experience in the NCAA and MEAC to which SSU is currently a provisional member. I am grateful that he has agreed to serve in this interim capacity.”

President Dozier stated “We would like to thank Mrs. Stacey-Suggs for her dedicated commitment to SSU over the past 22 years in several different capacities. Mrs. Suggs served in the position of athletic director for six months, after serving in an interim capacity for a year.

NCCU Eagles Fall To Savannah State In MEAC Bonus Game

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- (NCCUEaglePride.com) - The North Carolina Central University men’s basketball team committed 20 turnovers, shot just 3-for-12 from the three-point range, and played without its leading scorer, C.J. Wilkerson, who sat out Saturday’s MEAC Bonus Game at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum due to a fractured foot suffered two days ago as the Savannah State University Tigers outlasted the Eagles 64-50.

The resilient Eagles never once used Wilkerson’s injury as an excuse and in the first despite falling behind 15-7 with 14:57 to go, the resilient Eagles went on a 14-2 run to take a 21-17 lead forcing SSU head coach Horace Broadnax to call a timeout with 6:45 to go in the first frame.

During that span, five different Eagles scored baskets that began with freshman Jeremy Ingram’s layup. Following the timeout the Tigers quickly scored the next four points to tie it up and the game went back-and-forth the final five minutes until SSU’s Cedric Smith’s three-pointer with 31 seconds left gave the Tigers the 30-27 halftime lead.

SSU to play season finale at MEAC tourney

The men’s basketball program at Savannah State gets a glimpse of the future today.

The Tigers will play North Carolina Central at 11 a.m. at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. Currently as an Independent, SSU (11-18) isn’t exactly part of March Madness’ conference tournament hoopla. The Tigers will begin play in the MEAC next season.

“The guys are getting the chance to see what we’ll be part of next season,” SSU coach Horace Broadnax said. “Obviously, we’re not advancing but I think the guys will have a chance to see how (tournament) games become more intense in a one-and-done setting.”

Broadnax and the Tigers left campus Thursday and viewed part of the tournament quarterfinals Thursday night and the semifinals Friday.

Savannah State Sweeps Morris College in Hoops

Ezinne Kalu's free throw with 4 seconds to play gave Savannah State University a 75-74 victory over Morris College in a women's basketball game Thursday night at Tiger Arena. A crowd of 610 watched as Kalu scored a game-high 34 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead SSU (12-10). Rikiah Gatlin added 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Morris College (7-17), an NAIA team from Sumter, S.C., was led by Tyneshia Eaddy, who scored 23 points. Staci Holmes and Erica Wilkerson scored 13 points apiece.

Morris led twice in the game. The Hornets took their first lead, 69-67, with 2:53 to play on Shaniqua Campbell's layup. SSU's Kalu made two free throws with 1:52 left to tie the game at 69.

Savannah State men snap 13-game skid

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Preston Blackmon scored a career-high 26 points and Joshua Montgomery scored 22 points to lead Savannah State University past Southeastern Louisiana, 74-65, on Wednesday, snapping the Tigers' 13-game losing streak.

After the Lions scored the first basket in the Hardwood Club Holiday Tournament, SSU (2-13) grabbed the lead with an 18-4 run and never relinquished it despite a late threat from Southeastern Louisiana.

With the Tigers leading by 16 in the second half, the Lions (5-5) used a 12-0 run to close to 51-47. Blackmon hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to end that spurt, but with 5:36 to go, David Ndoumba scored eight straight points to get Southeastern Louisiana within 68-65 with 1:30 left.

Second Half Rally Falls Short In 74-65 Loss To Savannah State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Preston Blackmon scored a career-high 26 points, including a 5-for-5 performance from behind the 3-point line, and Savannah State snapped a 13-game losing streak as it built a 16-point lead and held off Southeastern Louisiana, 74-65, on Wednesday in the USM Hardwood Club Holiday Classic at Reed Green Coliseum.

Joshua Montgomery added 22 points, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc, as SSU (2-13) shot a season-high 55 percent (23-for-42) from the floor and 64 percent (9-for-14) from behind the 3-point line. Southeastern, which fell to 5-5 overall will face the loser of the Southern Miss-Mississippi Valley contest in the consolation game.

SSU beats IUPUI, 69-52

Courtney Long scored a game-high 18 points, Darice Fountaine added 11 points and Brittany Cade chipped in 10 points as Savannah State cruised past Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, 69-52, in a women's basketball game Tuesday night.

IUPUI JAGS SLOW START RESULTS IN 69-52 LOSS TO SAVANNAH STATE

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Playing its first game in 15 days, IUPUI showed signs of rust and fell in an early double-digit hole that it could not crawl out of as it dropped a 69-52 decision to Savannah State Tuesday evening at Tiger Arena.

The Jaguars came into the game averaging a shade over 40 points per game in the paint over the last four contests, but the size of Savannah State limited IUPUI to half that total and the 36-20 scoring advantage inside proved to be the difference for the Tigers.

“We had a lot of first-half turnovers that put us behind the eight ball,” said head coach Austin Parkinson. “When you can’t score points in the paint and you turn the ball over on the road, it’s going to be a tough night.”

Former Plant City star continues passion as college coach

Savannah State University's men's basketball team played Indiana University, one of the country's best known college basketball programs, live on ESPNU on Dec. 4. The Tigers lost, 79-57, but it marked the first prime-time televised game for Savannah State against a big-name opponent.

The loss dropped SSU's record to 1-9 on the season, but under the leadership of head coach Horace Broadnax, a former basketball star at Plant City High, the program is reaching new heights.

Marshall Men's Basketball Travels To Savannah State‎

Following its longest layoff of the season, the Marshall University men’s basketball team will take on Savannah State Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Tiger Arena.

Marshall enters the game riding a three-game win streak following a 67-63 victory over James Madison last week in Huntington. Senior Tirrell Baines led the way for the Herd against the Dukes, scoring 17 points. He has also been a threat on the boards, hauling in 7.4 per game, top on the Herd. His average of 3.4 offensive rebounds per game puts him third in Conference USA.

Nigel Spikes had one of the top outings of his career, hauling in 13 rebounds, a career-high for the sophomore and the highest total for a Marshall player this season. Since the game against Chattanooga, Spikes has averaged 7.2 boards per game.

Marshall basketball: Presley has Herd ready for foes

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Dino Presley knows all about Savannah State, Marshall's non-conference opponent tonight at 7 in the coastal Georgia city. Without pause, Presley, the Herd assistant basketball coach, can tell you about the Tigers' 1-2-2 zone defense, how leading scorer Jovanni Shuler "likes to put it on the floor," or even minutiae like the fact that third-leading scorer Joshua Montgomery is a lefty.

Presley, who is known for his recruiting acumen and lauded by Herd Coach Tom Herrion for his rapport with players, has been on scouting duties as Marshall (6-2) prepared for Savannah State (1-10).

SSU MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

The Savannah State men's basketball program is looking ahead to the future, literally and figuratively.

The Tigers have only one player competing that isn't a sophomore or freshman. Two juniors, Rashad Hassan and Arnold Louis, who were among the team's top players a year ago, will red-shirt this season to save a year of eligibility when the school joins the Mid-eastern Athletic Conference next season.

"The operative word is transition, as an institution and a program we're trying to transition into the MEAC," said SSU sixth-year coach Horace Broadnax, whose squad opens the season Friday at home against Brewton Parker.

Lady Tigers Opens with Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Thirteen home games and a pair of four-game home-stands highlights the Savannah State women’s basketball slate for the 2010-11 season. Despite 13 home games, SSU will travel through 10 states this season (Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Virginia, Maryland, Indiana and New Jersey).

Cedric Baker, who is entering his 8th season as the Lady Tiger head coach, has SSU opening their 27-game schedule against NAIA opponent Edward Waters on November 12. After games at Florida A&M, South Carolina State and Charlotte, the Lady Tigers have home contests with North Florida (Nov. 27) and Central Florida (Nov. 30).

Georgia Tech coming to Savannah State in 2011

Savannah State University Coach Horace Broadnax has played the Georgetown University Hoyas in Tiger Arena (2009) and now has Atlantic Coast Conference power Georgia Tech on the Tigers home court in 2011.

Georgia Tech's men's basketball team will travel to Savannah to play a game against Savannah State University at Tiger Arena during the 2011-12 season, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Georgia Tech’s non-conference home basketball schedule this season will include games against in-state opponents Kennesaw State, Mercer, Georgia and Savannah State.

The Yellow Jackets, who went 23-13 last season and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, will also host UNC-Charlotte, Charleston Southern, Albany, Niagara, Fordham, and UT-Chattanooga.

Copies of contracts between Georgia Tech and those schools were obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in response to an open-records request. Georgia Tech hasn’t released its schedule. This season (2010-11), SSU will travel to Atlanta to play Georgia Tech on December 11. In one of two pay-to-play games, Georgia Tech will pay Charleston Southern $70,000 to play on Nov. 12, in addition to a $12,000 travel stipend. The Yellow Jackets will pay UT-Chattanooga $35,000.

Savannah State: The Value of a Coach

Taking a 0-28 team to a 15 win season in less than four years is an accomplishment that is pretty hard to miss. This is something Horace Broadnax was able to do with the Savannah State University men’s basketball program. Something even more compelling was Broadnax’s ability to do this with the second lowest basketball budget in all of Division I (339 out of 340)! But what does it really mean in comparison to the rest of college basketball?



Broadnax’s 2009 season produced argubly the best Dollar-Per-Win ratio in modern college basketball. With 15 wins and a budget of $376,968, it came to roughly $25,131 per win. This may sound like a lot, but when you compare Coach Broadnax to his colleagues it is pretty apparent he may be the best bang for your buck in college basketball. Compared to the likes of big names like Howland, Williams, Self, and Donovan, Broadnax’s productivity is astounding. The bottom line is for less than one tenth the cost of the coaches just named, Horace Broadnax can get you a win.

One point of hot contention is whether completely turning around a program or doing it on such a meager budget is greater accomplishment? Regardless, Horace Broadnax has proved himself amongst the coaching ranks. It is hard to imagine what this guy could do with a little financial support and a program with an already well-established tradition as some of the heavy hitters listed above possess. The only disparity in Broadnax’s case is in the wins columns. His 15 wins is less than the generously budgeted basketball powerhouses mentioned above were able to achieve. This raises the question, how did Broadnax compare to coaches with the same number of wins?

Savannah State athletics on the rise

It's homecoming week at Savannah State. For years... The athletic programs have floundered in mediocrity. But with new leadership from President Dr. Earl Yarbrough and athletic director Bart Bellairs... There is hope for the future. "There have been some amazing things happen," said Bellairs. "The transformation of this campus is just beautiful."

The Savannah State athletic department is trying to pull itself out of the hole that was created by years of neglect. If nothing else, Bellairs can feel the excitement of growth. "Our football staff works tremendously hard at getting good. The players are feeling it, the campus is feeling it."

Basketball is just around the corner and Coach Horace Broadnax had helped the team gain respectability. "We're very excited. We just signed a deal with Georgetown that we'll go to Georgetown in men's basketball and they will come back in here the following year," said Bellairs. "Our women's team is already playing a huge schedule, they've got Georgia Tech coming in. We're hoping that everyone will get behind Savannah State athletics as we try to improve our competition and we have our quest to win championships."
