Southeastern Louisiana To Battle Savannah State In Home Opener

HAMMOND, LA – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team officially opens its 2011 home schedule on Saturday when it faces Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Savannah State at Strawberry Stadium.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game is also being televised on a tape-delayed basis by the Southeastern Channel (Charter Cable Channel 18 in Tangipahoa, St. Tammany, Livingston, and St. Helena Parishes; Charter Cable Channel 17 in Washington Parish). A live video steam, courtesy of the Southeastern Channel, is available at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (0-1), which is 8-0 in home openers since re-instating the program in 2003, returns to action after a 47-33 setback at Tulane in its season-opener last week in the Superdome. The Lions amassed 419 yards total offense and 26 first downs against the Green Wave.

Brian Young threw for 249 yards in a starting role for Southeastern with Brandon Collins catching a game-high nine passes for 94 yards. Carl Pearson caught four passes in his collegiate debut for the Lions while seniors Simmie Yarborough and Kory Theodore also grabbed four passes.

Yarborough, Southeastern's all-time leader in receptions (172) and touchdowns (27), gained 58 yards for the Lions and moved to within 286 yards of Felton Huggins' school-record of 2,345 yards from 2003-05.

Zeke Jones paced the Lions' rushing attack with 65 yards and a pair of touchdowns – increasing his career total to 15 TD runs and tying him with Ellis Johnson (1961-64) and Ray Perkins (2003-04) for fifth in school history.

Defensively, Tay Alford and freshman Marice Sutton led the Lions with seven tackles each with Robert Alford and Ricky Irvin recording six each.

Southeastern kicker Seth Sebastian booted a pair of field goals (30 and 38 yards) to extend his streak to 11 consecutive field goals made dating back to last season while redshirt freshman Jordan Wells returned eight kicks for 224 yards – the second-best single-game total in both categories in school history.

The meeting with Savannah State (0-1) is the first on the gridiron between the two schools and Southeastern's first against a current member of the MEAC.

SSU fell to Division II Albany State, 37-34, last week in the Music City Classic in Macon, Ga. The Tigers trailed 19-3 at halftime before a furious second-half rally fell short as ASU scored the game-winning touchdown with 19 seconds remaining.

Quarterback A.J. Defilippis completed 15-of-34 passes for 315 yards and three TDs for SSU with Brian Lackey catching three passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Cook and Simon Heyward each caught three passes for the Tigers, who gained 382 yards total offense.

Tickets are available from the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or on-line at www.LionSports.net.

Southern Jaguars, Southeastern Louisiana get rematch

You might recall that two weeks ago, on a strange night at Lee-Hines Field, Southern and Southeastern Louisiana met in a midweek college baseball game that had a little bit of everything.
Except a happy ending.

SLU’s Trey Martin stole home in the third inning. SU pitcher Belfred “T.J.” Pryer had what might have been his best outing of the season, holding the Lions to one run in seven innings. The Jaguars had a one-run lead in the eighth-inning, and SLU had a rally in the works. Then lightning delayed the game. Actually, as it turned out, lightning finished the game.

When umpires Anthony DeRousselle and Ryan Broussard told both teams to return, SU coach Roger Cador chose instead to forfeit, citing his players’ safety.

Lions To Host In-State Rival Southern In Midweek Contest

HAMMOND, LA – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team returns to action on Tuesday when it plays host to in-state rival Southern University at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (22-11) has won seven of its last nine games that began with a 9-0 win by forfeit over Southern (19-11) on March 29. The Lions took two of three games in Southland Conference play last weekend at UT Arlington and will face league leader Texas State in a three-game series beginning Friday in San Marcos, Texas.

Savannah State men snap 13-game skid

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Preston Blackmon scored a career-high 26 points and Joshua Montgomery scored 22 points to lead Savannah State University past Southeastern Louisiana, 74-65, on Wednesday, snapping the Tigers' 13-game losing streak.

After the Lions scored the first basket in the Hardwood Club Holiday Tournament, SSU (2-13) grabbed the lead with an 18-4 run and never relinquished it despite a late threat from Southeastern Louisiana.

With the Tigers leading by 16 in the second half, the Lions (5-5) used a 12-0 run to close to 51-47. Blackmon hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to end that spurt, but with 5:36 to go, David Ndoumba scored eight straight points to get Southeastern Louisiana within 68-65 with 1:30 left.

Second Half Rally Falls Short In 74-65 Loss To Savannah State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Preston Blackmon scored a career-high 26 points, including a 5-for-5 performance from behind the 3-point line, and Savannah State snapped a 13-game losing streak as it built a 16-point lead and held off Southeastern Louisiana, 74-65, on Wednesday in the USM Hardwood Club Holiday Classic at Reed Green Coliseum.

Joshua Montgomery added 22 points, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc, as SSU (2-13) shot a season-high 55 percent (23-for-42) from the floor and 64 percent (9-for-14) from behind the 3-point line. Southeastern, which fell to 5-5 overall will face the loser of the Southern Miss-Mississippi Valley contest in the consolation game.

SSU beats IUPUI, 69-52

Courtney Long scored a game-high 18 points, Darice Fountaine added 11 points and Brittany Cade chipped in 10 points as Savannah State cruised past Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, 69-52, in a women's basketball game Tuesday night.

A Tiger Arena crowd of 230 watched as SSU (6-7) jumped out to a 37-18 halftime lead. IUPUI (3-8) was led by Jasmine Horne and Shea Collins, who...

IUPUI JAGS SLOW START RESULTS IN 69-52 LOSS TO SAVANNAH STATE

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Playing its first game in 15 days, IUPUI showed signs of rust and fell in an early double-digit hole that it could not crawl out of as it dropped a 69-52 decision to Savannah State Tuesday evening at Tiger Arena.

The Jaguars came into the game averaging a shade over 40 points per game in the paint over the last four contests, but the size of Savannah State limited IUPUI to half that total and the 36-20 scoring advantage inside proved to be the difference for the Tigers.

“We had a lot of first-half turnovers that put us behind the eight ball,” said head coach Austin Parkinson. “When you can’t score points in the paint and you turn the ball over on the road, it’s going to be a tough night.”

SLU comes back to beat Southern University in 10th

Joe Sparacino's two-out run-scoring double in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted Southeastern Louisiana to an 8-7 victory against Southern last night in Hammond. The Lions (6-3) overcame a 7-0 deficit to knock off the visiting Jaguars (3-5). Both teams had a chance to win it in the ninth. Two errors and a walk helped the Jaguars load the bases in the top of the inning, but Toddrick Stevenson popped up to the pitcher to end the threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ty Summerlin singled with one out and moved to third on Brandon Street's single. Josh Cryer was intentionally walked to load the bases. But Chris Franklin grounded into a double play to force extra innings. Southern had runners on the corners with two out in the top of the 10th, but Gregory Whitfield grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Southern jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings, but SLU pecked away before tying the game in the eighth on Jordan D'Arensbourg's two-run home run. Edmond Morton's two-run homer in the second gave the Jaguars a 2-0 lead. Victor Franklin's one-out solo shot in the third pushed the SU advantage to 3-0.

SE Louisiana Lions stave off Alcorn Braves to spoil Jones' debut

LORMAN, MS - Ernest Jones saw his share of amazing comebacks in his playing days at Alcorn State during the Steve McNair era. In his head coaching debut at his alma mater, Jones came oh-so-close to seeing another one. Tim Buckley's fourth-down pass with six seconds left was just out of the grasp of Channin Pugh and Alcorn dropped a 34-28 heart breaker to Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday night in the season opener at Jack Spinks Stadium.

"I marched up and down the field during that drive and told my guys that we have a chance," said Jones, who replaced Johnny Thomas. "I played with a miracle-maker. Steve McNair made miracles happen and games like that we were in all the time. The expectations were that we were going to drive down the field and win the football game." And the Braves almost did that.
