Henton, Slaughter eligible to play for FVSU Wildcats

FORT VALLEY, GA -- The names are familiar to Fort Valley State fans, especially those who may have seen the two players in action about five turns and two miles away at Peach County.

Finally, the former Trojans are now Wildcats, and fans can get a look at quarterback Antonio Henton and wide receiver Chris Slaughter and their teammates at 6 p.m. on Saturday when FVSU holds an open scrimmage at Wildcat Stadium.

“They look great,” said FVSU head coach Donald Pittman, who got word this summer that both were finally eligible. “They’ll only get better. The more they practice, the better they get.” The pair is joined by another former Peach County star, running back and kick returner Travis Richmond, who signed with FVSU in February.

Fort Valley State University Men's Basketball Coach Relieved of Duties

Fort Valley, Ga. (March 7, 2011) - After a 10 a.m. meeting with the men’s head basketball coach, Fort Valley State University (FVSU) Athletic Director Percy Caldwell has announced that John Douglas has been relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of FVSU Men’s Basketball.

Douglas served as head coach for the past two seasons at FVSU and during that time accumulated a 17-40 overall record (43% winning record) and a 15-33 conference record (45% winning record). The Wildcats finished the regular season ranked 11th out of 13 teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and were eliminated in the first round of the conference tournament in both years.

“After an assessment of the past two years of the men’s basketball program, it has become patently clear that we must take our program in a different direction, said Caldwell. We are grateful to Coach Douglas for the service he has provided and wish him success in his future endeavors.’

The search for a new men’s head basketball coach will begin immediately.

ASU women flatten FVSU, seize control of No. 1 in SIAC

Albany, Ga. - Good things come to those who wait. Just ask the Albany State women’s basketball team, which had to wait a little over a month to get another crack at Fort Valley State after the Lady Wildcats handed the Lady Rams their first conference loss (74-69) in early January.

So when the time finally came for ASU to take the court against one of its fierce rivals, the Lady Rams did not hold anything back, especially Kourtney Alexander who scored a career-high 35 points, as ASU soundly defeated FVSU, 82-69, Saturday night.

“We needed this win,” ASU coach Robert Skinner said of the victory, which propelled into sole possession of No. 1 in the SIAC. Skinner than added: “This is what we have been waiting for, a chance to get an opportunity to get Fort Valley back in Albany and it feels good and we are really pleased with the win (Saturday night).”

The win gives ASU (15-9, 14-4 in the SIAC) sole possession of the No. 1 spot in the conference, while FVSU (15-9, 13-5) drops to the second spot.

Salley gets 20 as Claflin drops Fort Valley State

The outside was cold and rainy, but inside the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center, things heated up between two SIAC rivals.

As the Claflin University Panthers (5-3) (4-2) stopped the Fort Valley State Wildcats in their tracks with a 71-58 victory. The Panthers went into the break leading by five points, 30-25, shooting a blistering 65 percent (11-17) from the field and going 7-9 from the free throw line for 78 percent to keep the Cats at bay.


Efe Odigie scored eight points and Eric Salley scored seven points in the first stanza for the Panthers. Desmond Lofland, Detritus McCall, and Brandon Davey each scored five points for Fort Valley at the midway point.

Claflin Lady Panthers fall to Fort Valley State Lady Wildcats

The Lady Wildcats of Fort Valley State are the preseason favorites to capture the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. The Claflin University Lady Panthers got an up-close look at the Lady Wildcats Saturday afternoon, and what to expect this season.

The Lady Wildcats upped their league mark to a perfect 4-0 with a 72-54 win over the Lady Panthers at the Edward L. Tullis Arena on the Claflin University campus. The victory also improved the Lady Wildcats to 6-3 overall, while the Lady Panthers fell to 2-3 in conference play and 2-5 for the season.

Albany State Golden Rams win SIAC title in a thriller!

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It wasn't easy or pretty but Albany State got the job done. The Rams held off Fort Valley State 12-7 in the Fountain City Classic to claim their first SIAC title since 2006. Stanley Jennings connected on 2 touchdown passes to Ronnie Childs in the second half after both teams failed to get on the score board in the first half.

The Rams' defense stepped up big in the 4th quarter with less than a minute left. ASU held Fort Valley out of the end zone after a blocked punt gave the Wildcats possession at the Ram 10 yard line. The win closes out a 10-0 regular season for the Rams.

Rams Edge FVSU for SIAC Title

This year's Fountain City Classic was more than a rivalry game. The SIAC Championship was at stake in Columbus between the 6th ranked undefeated Albany State Rams, and No. 25 Fort Valley State, winners of seven straight.

After battling to a scoreless tie in the first, the Wildcats' Emanuel Williams scooped up a fumble by LiRonnie Davis and took it to the end zone to give FVSU a 7-0 edge. The Rams responded with back-to-back touchdown passes from Stanley Jennings to Ronnie Childs to put Albany State ahead 12-7.



Wrong shade of blue: Fort Valley State falls short against Albany State

COLUMBUS — Tony Reid could only kneel down and watch, listen and stare blankly ahead as fans in blue and gold celebrated. The problem for the junior running back was simple — the wrong fans in the wrong blue and gold were happy.

“We came in and won last year and Albany State looked at it as a fluke, it just so happened we got lucky,” the Fort Valley State running back said. “We knew that it wasn’t luck last year. We had to do it again and make them respect us. We didn’t do that.”

FVSU rallies to knock off Lane

The Fort Valley State Wildcats improved to 8-1 overall and 7-1 in the SIAC with a 31-18 win over Lane on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats entered the fourth quarter trailing 18-14, but they dominated the final quarter, scoring the final 17 points against the winless Dragons.

With his team trailing in the final quarter, Tony Reid took over. He scored from 1 yard out with 14:15 left and added a 6-yarder with 12:03 left to give the Wildcats control of the game. FVSU’s Justin Rosenbaum made a 47-yard field goal with less than six minutes remaining to close the scoring.

Lane falls to Fort Valley

For three quarters, it was difficult to tell which team entered Saturday's game at Lane Field No. 3 in the nation and which team was winless. Looking for its first win of the season, Lane College (0-9, 0-8) took an 18-14 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats (No. 3, NCAA Division II, HBCUDigest.com poll) responded with 17 unanswered points, pulling out a 31-18 win.

The Wildcats' Tony Reid scored on a one-yard run on the second play of the fourth quarter after racing 53 yards in the wildcat formation that gave Fort Valley the lead for keeps in Lane's final home game of the season.
