Hampton, Virginia -- Another tough out: A week after losing its ninth straight game to South Carolina State, Howard will aim to end a 14-game drought against Hampton, which includes a 31-21 loss at Greene Stadium last season. Hampton has scored an average of 34 points in the teams’ past five meetings.
Pirates air it out: Led by quarterback David Legree, the Pirates lead the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in passing offense (255 yards per game). Legree, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound senior with a powerful arm, ranks third in the conference in passing, completing 141 of 229 attempts (61.5 percent) for 1,626 yards and 10 touchdowns. Howard, however, leads the MEAC in passing defense, yielding a scant 145.2 yards per game (fourth nationally).
Good foot: The Pirates’ Taurean Durham, a two-time MEAC special teams player of the week, ranks second in the conference in kicking, connecting on 10 of his 15 attempts (tied for most). The junior is 5 for 7 from 20 to 29 yards and 5 for 6 from 30 to 39 yards.

Savannah State meets Hampton on homecoming Saturday
Savannah, Georgia -- There are still four games to go in the football season for the Savannah State Tigers. After losing six of the first seven, you might think first-year coach Steve Davenport would be looking at younger players.
But Davenport isn’t using the final part of the season as an audition for next year. Particularly today on the Tigers’ homecoming.
“We’re not at that point,” said Davenport, whose squad meets Hampton University at 2 p.m. at T.A Wright Stadium. “I don’t want to toss the seniors aside just for the sake of looking at young kids. We’re going to play the best players. The guys we have playing are the older guys and they’re the best players.
“Our mentality the whole time is we’re going to play the best players. If the results aren’t good enough, then we have to go out and get better players.”

HU Pirates survive homecoming scare in win over NCCU Eagles
HAMPTON, Virginia - The Hampton University football team’s four seniors had one thing in mind coming into Saturday’s contest at Armstrong Stadium: Homecoming. The Pirates had not won a Homecoming game since defeating Winston-Salem State 13-3 in 2006, but seniors David Legree, Isaiah Thomas, Dyrri McCain and Micah Pellein wanted to leave their final year with a win on Homecoming – which the Pirates would accomplish, though it took longer than expected with a 30-27 overtime win over North Carolina Central.
Hampton started the game by driving the ball into NCCU territory on its first two drives, but the first ended in a turnover on downs and the second ended in a blocked field goal. The Eagles would get on the board first, when Oleg Parent kicked a 40-yard field goal with 20 second left in the first quarter. Hampton would answer the Eagles on a 6-yard run by running back Antwon Chisholm with 11:49 left in the second quarter to give the Pirates a 7-3 lead. Hampton would score once more in the second quarter off of a 23-yard field goal by Taurean Durham to put the Pirates up 10-3, but the Eagles would manage to go 60 yards in under 1:46 to tie the game up at 10-10 at halftime.

HU pulls away in overtime, defeats N.C. Central 30-27
HAMPTON, Virginia — — On a day when Hampton continually struggled to get out of its own way, it was North Carolina Central that wound up making the biggest mistake. The Eagles celebrated too soon.
Up three in overtime, the Eagles pranced off the field in jubilation after defensive back Marc Lewis appeared to recover an Antwan Chisholm fumble. Ultimately, though, it was Hampton's Jamal Wilson with the ball at the bottom of the pile. Three plays later, Jeremiah Schwartz bulled into the end zone from a yard out to lift the Pirates past the Eagles 30-27 at Armstrong Stadium and seal Hampton's first homecoming victory since 2006.
"When I saw that play, the first thing I thought about was the Bethune game," Pirates coach Donovan Rose said, referring to Hampton's controversial loss Sept. 22 at Bethune-Cookman, when Isiah Thomas' apparent game-winning touchdown reception as time expired was overturned on video review. "I'm thinking, Oh, no, not again.

Hampton U. thwarts Princeton's second-half surge for 28-23 victory
Hampton, Virginia -- Dyrri McCain had seen enough. Hampton's senior wide receiver and his Pirate teammates had watched an 11-point halftime lead evaporate after a pair of field goals and back-to-back safeties in less than six minutes, and they'd just escaped losing their suddenly slim edge altogether when Princeton missed a field goal.
It was time to get down to business. HU mounted an 11-play, 80-yard drive, kept alive when a defender tipped a 15-yard pass on third-and-10 into Javaris Brown's arms, to take a 28-20 lead on McCain's 1-yard touchdown reception, then held off the Tigers 28-23 with a goal-line stand in the final two minutes.
"We didn't play the same type of football that we played in the first half," said McCain, who caught 123 of quarterback David Legree's 302 passing yards and both his passing TDs. "When it got down to where it was like, 'This is it, we have to make a play,' we drove it all the way down. Our tempo picked up. Everybody had it in their mind, 'We've got to turn this around. It's getting too out of hand. "

Florida A&M vs. Hampton Fumble - It's still loose!
Next up for ODU: The Hampton Pirates
Before reviewing Old Dominion’s 40-17 victory over Georgia State at the nearly empty Georgia Dome – honestly, was anybody there? – it’s time to look ahead.
ODU hosts Hampton University this coming Saturday and the Pirates are off to a 2-0 start. The Pirates have a pair of victories over some A&M schools: Alabama A&M and Florida A&M.
ODU coach Bobby Wilder says the difference in Hampton from a year ago comes at the quarterback spot where David Legree is off to a hot and fast start.
“Legree has an NFL arm and that concerns us,” Wilder said. The Monarchs host Hampton at 6 p.m. at Foreman Field on Saturday, Sept. 17.

Florida A&M falls to Hampton, 23-17
Hampton, VA - This time was a little better. But for the second consecutive visit, the Florida A&M football team was turned away at Armstrong Stadium and unable to give coach Joe Taylor his first victory on the same field where he had won hundreds of football games.
Taylor's former team took advantage of a FAMU offense that misfired all night and a defense that gave Hampton University one opportunity after another. When the Pirates were done, they racked up 428 yards in total offense and earned a 23-17 victory Thursday night.
Through the first three quarters, FAMU ran 51 plays that produced 164 yards of total offense. By that time, the Pirates had 334 yards on 60 plays. Quarterback David Legree threw for 261 of those yards.

Chicago Classic is homecoming of sorts for AAMU's Jackson
"I jumped all over it and decided I was done with football," he said. "I was going to pursue an acting career."
After completing the project in late July, Jackson, who graduated in May with a degree in exercise science, got a chance to talk with Perry. He encouraged him to finish his football career.
"He told me if I had a year left to play, I should go ahead and play," Jackson said. "He told me acting would always be there."

2011 Hampton football preview | Rose puts faith in high school coach
HAMPTON, VA - Hampton head coach Donovan Rose picked his first staff based on loyalty. His second, he based on history. Entering his third season, Rose is going with his heart.
The Pirates, predicted to finish in the upper half of the MEAC, spent the offseason overhauling the coaching staff for the third consecutive season, bringing on three new faces, including a new offensive coordinator for the third consecutive year.
“I looked around and, I know who I am as a person, but the program was not a reflection of who I am,” Rose said. “I wanted coaches with the same values as me. For the first time, I feel like the coaching staff is a reflection of me.”
The coaching changes are part of an effort to resolve an offense that has become less productive in each of the four years since coach Joe Taylor left the program for Florida A&M, bottoming out last year at 17.5 points per game, 103rd in the FCS.

HU coach Rose more comfortable heading into third season
NORFOLK, VA —— Donovan Rose feels more comfortable going into his third season as head coach at Hampton University. He knows, though, that there's an even greater impetus to get things done.
That point was driven home at the Pirates' end-of-the-year athletic banquet as Rose talked with women's basketball coach David Six and men's basketball coach Ed "Buck" Joyner. Six, who has won back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament titles in his two seasons as the Lady Pirates' coach, and Joyner, whose Pirates won the MEAC tournament championship this past season in his second year at the helm, were each rewarded with three-year contract extensions in April.
"All three of us came in at the same time," said Rose, a 17-year HU assistant before taking the head job in 2009. "Six won (the conference championship) his first year. Buck won it his second. It's on me now."
Rose's Pirates, who went 6-5 in 2010 after a 5-6 finish in 2009, were picked to finish fourth in the MEAC in 2011 in voting Friday by league coaches and sports information directors.

Hampton University: Dream come true' for new Stamp
CALGARY - LaMarcus Coker called his audition with the Calgary Stampeders a “dream come true.” As it turned out, the shifty running back didn’t get much chance to dream about it on the eve of rookie camp at McMahon Stadium.
“It’s been a while since I’ve practised at this level of competition, so I was anxious. I didn’t even get much sleep last night,” Coker said. “I stayed up studying my playbook till 2 a.m., and by the time I finally fell asleep, it felt like I was opening my eyes back up at 5:30 a.m. to come over here and get treatment and get my ankles taped up.”
If Coker was feeling sluggish, it didn’t show during Thursday’s opening sessions of Stampeders rookie camp at McMahon Stadium. During offensive drills, the 24-year-old ball-carrier rattled off a couple of impressive runs, showcasing his speed on the big field. If he shows enough to earn a full-time job with the Red & White, he’s not expecting many more late nights. “I’m just here to work, and the recreational stuff, just leave that to the side,” Coker said.

Hampton Pirates bulk up with three basketball signee
Ed Joyner's 2011 recruiting class at Hampton University is proof it pays to be persistent — and that it helps to be a little lucky.
In addition to Phoebus product Dashawn Stitt, who verbally committed to Hampton in January, Joyner also has signed two players from Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, N.C., which went 26-4 and finished the 2010-11 season ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 25 in the country by MaxPreps.
The Pirates were originally focused on recruiting 6-foot-5 shooting guard Keron Brown, who averaged 14 points and six rebounds last season, Joyner said. Dwight Meikle, his 6-8 power forward/guard combo teammate who averaged 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks, verbally committed to St. John's in November.
But when Meikle was released from that commitment last Wednesday, Joyner was waiting.

Hampton Pirates get top seeded Duke
HAMPTON, VA – The Hampton University men’s basketball team, fresh off winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament championship, will face No. 1 seed Duke on Friday in Charlotte, N.C. in the second round of the 2011 NCAA Div. I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
The Pirates learned their fate at a Selection Show party Sunday evening in the Student Center Ballroom, erupting in raucous applause and cheers when the school’s name was announced in front of an audience of fans and boosters.
Hampton (24-8), making their first NCAA appearance since 2006, earned the No. 16 seed in the West Region. They defeated defending MEAC champion Morgan State 60-55 on Saturday in the title game for their fifth straight win.
Ex-Trenton mayor: 16th-seed Hampton will shock No. 1 Duke in NCAA Tournament
TRENTON, NJ -- Watch out, Dukies, little ol' Hampton is coming to eat your lunch! So says former Trenton mayor Doug Palmer after hearing that his alma mater is slated to open the NCAA Tournament against the defending national champion and top seed in the West.
Hampton University (24-8) is the 16-seed after winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title. On Friday in Charlotte, N.C., the Pirates will face No. 5 Duke (29-4), which beat North Carolina to win the ACC crown and grab a top seed for the 12th time.
But Hampton has history on its side in tournament games against powerhouses.

Lady Bison Fall Short in Season Finale, 60-54
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After dropping to Maryland Eastern Shore on the road this past Saturday, the Lady Bison looked to take down the Hampton Pirates – the No. 1 ranked team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference – in their final game of the regular season. Unfortunately the Bison (13-17, 9-7 MEAC) would not come out on top as the Pirates (22-6, 15-1 MEAC) took the win, 60-54.
Seniors Jalisa Pullins and Amanda Edwards where honored prior to tip off and each garnered starts against their conference foe.
Although the Pirates have already clinched the regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming tournament, the Bison did not shy away from the historic rivalry as Howard kept pace with a Pirate team that leads the MEAC in scoring defense (53.6 ppg allowed) and second in overall scoring (65.3).
The Bison were only outscored in the paint by four points (30-26), while the Pirates combined for 29 points off turnovers and second chances compared to Howard’s 21. The quickness and depth of Howard’s roster afforded them eight points on fast breaks and 13 points from the bench, while Hampton was held to zero points in those categories.
“We needed to get the ball in the paint more and create more offensive and inside plays,” head coach Niki Geckeler said. “We weren’t able to finish in transition. We needed more free throws.”
Hampton maintained the lead for the majority of the game and balanced their offense with four players who scored in double figures. The Bison relinquished 17 turnovers by the conclusion of the game.
Headlining the Bison in the season finale was sophomore Saadia Doyle who garnered 20 points, nine rebounds, two steals and an assist. Doyle was recently named the 2010-11 MEAC Player of the Year following an impressive season where she led the conference in scoring (18.2), was second in rebounding (8.9), fourth in shooting (45 percent), and fifth in free throw shooting (76 percent) entering the game. With today’s game in the books, the former MEAC Rookie of the Year has racked in 549 points on the year, inching her further up the Howard All-time scoring list.
Teaming up with Doyle was sophomore guard Cheyenne Curley-Payne who recorded 19 points, seven rebounds and two steals against Hampton. Sophomore Tamoria Holmes also chimed in with eight points three rebounds, and finished first on the team in assists (3) alongside Curley-Payne.
“We made some adjustments,” Geckeler said. “We limited their plays at the end, especially on the inside, but they had key players in penetration.”
With less than a minute left the Bison tried to make a run to capture the lead and the win after being down 48-57. Strong defense on the part of Curley-Payne led to a Pirate turnover as Jericka Jenkins fumbled the ball out of bounds. Doyle drew a foul on an attempted layup and was successful at the line (1-1), inching the Bison closer to a hopeful win.
Several successful trips to the line would allow Hampton to eventually secure the game, ending Howard’s eight-game winning streak at home.
“I feel that we fought hard,” Curley-Payne said, “but we just came up short.”
Next week the Lady Bison will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the MEAC Tournament.

Hampton Uses Its Bench and Outside Shooting To Down Howard
Washington, DC--Anton Dickerson scored 18 of his team-high 21 points in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the hot shooting of Christopher Tolson, who came off the bench to score 20 points and lead Hampton University to an 83-72 win over Howard University in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's game at Burr Gymnasium. It was the regular season finale for both teams.
The Bison (6-23 overall, 4-12 in the MEAC) came out strong in the second half and overcame a 14-point deficit with 14-2 run over the first four minutes and draw to within two at 38-36 at 16-minute mark. Dickerson scored 8 of the points during the run while Mike Phillips added four.
"We fought back and played better early in the second half," said Howard Coach Kevin Nickelberry. "The problem is when you have five guys play over 30 minutes, it becomes a difficult task. Fatigue set in and we ran out of gas."

Hampton Pirates fall in double O.T to B-CU; fall out of 1st
HAMPTON– The Hampton University men’s basketball team fell 78-76 in double overtime to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates (19-7, 9-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and fall a game behind Bethune-Cookman in the conference standings.
C.J. Reed hit a floater as time expired to give the Wildcats (16-11, 10-3 MEAC) the win, after the Pirates fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76-76 on a layup from junior guard Kwame Morgan with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period.
HU loses double overtime heartbreaker to Bethune-Cookman
HAMPTON — Darrion Pellum knew how important Saturday's game was in terms of Hampton University's seeding situation with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament two weeks away.
He'd only discussed it a few dozen times with his teammates in the days leading up to HU's meeting with Bethune-Cookman, which sat tied atop the MEAC with HU at 9-3 in the conference heading into the game.
After Bethune's 78-76 double overtime victory at HU's Convocation Center, Pellum and his teammates were left to wonder what it would mean for HU (19-7 overall, 9-4 MEAC). It's a serious blow to HU's confidence heading down the stretch in what is traditionally a one-NCAA tournament bid conference — and will be again this season.

Hampton's Morgan shoots Pirates past Norfolk State 86-72
NORFOLK, VA — Kwame Morgan looks like any normal red-blooded human being, but he clearly has ice chips, not platelets, coursing through his circulatory system.
Morgan made three huge 3-pointers, each which swung the momentum firmly to Hampton's side, as the Pirates held off Norfolk State 86-72 on Saturday night to win their fourth straight game and remain atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
"He's one of those kids that relishes the big moment," HU coach Ed Joyner said. "He understands it. He'll deal with the criticism for not making the play, and he'll handle the credit when he knocks down the big shot."

HU sweeps Battle Of The Bay
NORFOLK, VA – The Hampton University men’s basketball team picked up its fourth straight win in front of a sold-out Echols Hall on Saturday night, beating Norfolk State 86-72.
The Pirates (19-5, 9-2 MEAC) were led by 26 points from junior guard Darrion Pellum on 8-for-16 shooting and 6-for-11 from the free throw line. Junior guard Kwame Morgan added 19 points, while senior guard Brandon Tunnell scored 15 points. Senior forward Charles Funches added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
NSU victory puts Pirates in driver's seat in MEAC
NORFOLK, VA - If the standings in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference were a bit murky a little over a week ago, they are becoming crystal clear now: The Hampton Pirates are the team to beat.
The Pirates rolled into hostile - and heavily populated - territory Saturday night and strutted out of sold-out Echols Hall with an 86-72 victory over Norfolk State.
Mixing a packed-in zone defense with man-to-man, which was designed to offer help down low, the Pirates kept Spartans center Kyle O'Quinn from ever finding a rhythm. The 6-foot-10 junior, who had earned back-to-back MEAC Player of the Week honors, was limited to 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Jenkins' mastery at point guard helps Lady Pirates to 74-53 win vs. Norfolk State
NORFOLK, VA — Choicetta McMillian tied a career-high with 20 points and Jericka Jenkins had 16 of her 22 points and five of her nine assists in the first half as Hampton's women's basketball team rolled to a 74-53 victory against Norfolk State.
The Lady Pirates held an opponent to fewer than 60 points for the 11th straight time while topping 70 points for the third consecutive game in their 10th win in a row against the Lady Spartans.
Jenkins, a junior guard who came into the game tied for second in the nation with seven assists per game, steadied Hampton (18-6, 10-1 MEAC), leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, during the game's first 13 minutes, when the Lady Spartans (8-13 1-10) seemed determined to make a game of it. Jenkins sparked a stagnant Lady Pirates offense with her penetration, scoring seven early points from the free-throw line — where she was 9-of-10 - after drawing fouls in the lane.
