Hampton, Virginia -- Hampton University has received verbal commitments from a pair of players at North Carolina powerhouse Northside Christian in Charlotte.
Dionte Adams, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound combo forward, and L.C. Cooks, a 6-1, 175-pound shooting guard, visited Hampton together last weekend and were sold on the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament champions, led by third-year coach Ed "Buck" Joyner.
"Even before (Adams') visit to Hampton, just researching the place, he had felt like that was the place," said Northside Christian coach Byron Dinkins, who said Adams also had scholarship offers from Winthrop, Presbyterian and Pembroke. "We told him he needed to see it, and once they took their visit, they both came back ready to get it done."
Adams, a first-team all-state selection as a junior, averaged 14 points and 13 rebounds last season as the Knights went 29-3 and finished runner-up in the state, posting a career high of 28 points and 18 rebounds in one game.

Hampton Pirates hoops coaches earn contract extensions
Hampton University men's basketball coach Ed "Buck" Joyner and women's basketball coach David Six, who each led their teams to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament titles and NCAA appearances in their second seasons, received three-year contract extensions on Wednesday.
Joyner's Pirates went 24-9, won their first MEAC tournament since 2006 and posted their first 20-win season since the 2001-02 season. "I'm just happy with the fact that they think I'm capable of leading the program into the near future, and hopefully further than that," Joyner said.
The Lady Pirates went 25-7, won the MEAC regular-season title with their second straight 20-win season and fell to Kentucky in overtime in the first round of the NCAA. "I think the best is yet to come," Six said. "We were a stone's throw away this year, and I really believe eventually we're going to knock that door down."

Joyner returns home to realize dream, coaches Hampton Pirates to NCAA tournament
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — They'll have a few more stories and another piece of hardware to talk about at the next Joyner family reunion, courtesy of what just occurred at the last one.The Joyner basketball coaching tree — Edward "Buck" Joyner Sr., Stephen Joyner and his son, Little Steve — as well as assorted grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins ventured across town Saturday afternoon to Joel Coliseum to watch Ed Joyner Jr. realize a lifelong dream.
The man known to family members as "Little Buck" coaxed and encouraged and orchestrated Hampton University's men to their first MEAC tournament title since 2006.
Hampton Holds Back Morgan, Captures MEAC Title, 60-55
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The great shooting that Morgan State displayed in the past two MEAC tournament games came to a screeching halt in the second half. Hampton got some timely baskets from Darrion Pellum to help the Pirates beat the Bears 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament Championship game at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The fact that MSU center Kevin Thompson got into foul trouble was a huge factor in how the game went. Morgan State head coach Todd Bozeman said about the situation, “We need him on the floor, that's obvious. He fought hard in there, it's hard when you're at the disadvantage.”
“It was a war,” Hampton head coach Ed Joyner said. “It was what we expected, it's the one we wanted to win.”
PIRATES DEFEAT MORGAN STATE TO CLAIM 2011 MEAC BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Brandon Tunnell scored 12 of his career-high 20 points in the second half and Darrion Pellum added all 12 of his after intermission to help Hampton defeat Morgan State, 60-55 in the MEAC Tournament Championship at the Joel Coliseum.
“It was a war,” Hampton head coach Ed Joyner said. “It was what we expected; it’s the one we wanted to win.”
The Pirates (24-8) denied the Bears their fourth consecutive tournament title and Joyner obtained his first ever as a head coach. The win also secured Hampton an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Hampton will learn when and where they will compete in the NCAA tournament once the pairings are announced on Sunday.

Hampton women crush FAMU, claim 1st MEAC title in 7 seasons
HAMPTON — Laura Lewis and Quanneisha Perry wrapped their arms around each others' shoulders and showed no sign of wanting to let go. Hampton University's two seniors combined for 25 points and 17 rebounds in an 88-49 victory against Florida A&M on Monday night that clinched HU's first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season title in seven seasons.
"We are so excited," Lewis repeated, clinging to her fellow forward in a post-game interview.
"Every year, we were picked to finish fifth or fourth," said Perry, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds on Monday and now has 1,139 points and 897 rebounds in her four-year HU career. "(This year), hard work paid off."

Hampton Pirates fall in double O.T to B-CU; fall out of 1st
HAMPTON– The Hampton University men’s basketball team fell 78-76 in double overtime to Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the HU Convocation Center. The Pirates (19-7, 9-4 MEAC) have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season and fall a game behind Bethune-Cookman in the conference standings.
C.J. Reed hit a floater as time expired to give the Wildcats (16-11, 10-3 MEAC) the win, after the Pirates fought back with a 6-0 run to tie the game at 76-76 on a layup from junior guard Kwame Morgan with 50 seconds left in the second overtime period.
HU loses double overtime heartbreaker to Bethune-Cookman
HAMPTON — Darrion Pellum knew how important Saturday's game was in terms of Hampton University's seeding situation with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men's basketball tournament two weeks away.
He'd only discussed it a few dozen times with his teammates in the days leading up to HU's meeting with Bethune-Cookman, which sat tied atop the MEAC with HU at 9-3 in the conference heading into the game.
After Bethune's 78-76 double overtime victory at HU's Convocation Center, Pellum and his teammates were left to wonder what it would mean for HU (19-7 overall, 9-4 MEAC). It's a serious blow to HU's confidence heading down the stretch in what is traditionally a one-NCAA tournament bid conference — and will be again this season.

A&T upsets Hampton
GREENSBORO, N.C. — With its 74-63 victory over first-place Hampton on Monday night, N.C. A&T took an important first step toward climbing the MEAC ladder.Playing in their fourth straight game without guard Nic Simpson, the Aggies (12-14, 7-5) weathered 27 points from Kwame Morgan to pull away from the Pirates (19-6, 9-3) in the final minutes in the Corbett Sports Center.
Simpson, who likely will be sidelined until the final week of the season with a knee injury, is A&T's second-leading scorer at 14.6 points per game. "This team has really stepped up. They really have. It just doesn't show all the time," A&T coach Jerry Eaves said. "To have lost Nic, the team has made a decision they can win."
Aggies' Streak Comes To An End
GREENSBORO, N.C. - There were times on Monday when it looked like North Carolina A&T's streak would end without much of a fight.
That is until the Aggies started to fight. They took conference-leader Hampton's best shots, and kept getting off the canvas. But missed opportunities on the offensive end, and made Hampton free throws finally finished off the Aggies in a 74-66 loss to the Pirates.
The loss brought to an end one of the most impressive streaks in MEAC history. The Aggies went four years without losing to a conference opponent at home. The winning streak lasted 30 games. It lasted so long; no current player on the roster was an Aggie when the streak began.
"A streak like that says you have had one of the better programs for a long time," said N.C. A&T head Patricia Cage-Bibbs.

Morgan made three huge 3-pointers, each which swung the momentum firmly to Hampton's side, as the Pirates held off Norfolk State 86-72 on Saturday night to win their fourth straight game and remain atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
"He's one of those kids that relishes the big moment," HU coach Ed Joyner said. "He understands it. He'll deal with the criticism for not making the play, and he'll handle the credit when he knocks down the big shot."

FAMU shocks Hampton
Florida A&M basketball coach Eugene Harris doesn't take off his jacket except on a rare occasion.
Monday night was one of them. With 37.2 seconds on the clock and the Rattlers holding a three-possession lead on the top team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Harris was down to his white shirt and tie. On the other end, Hampton University's head coach Edward Joyner constantly wiped the sweat that had beaded up on his face, as if he knew his team's second conference loss was inevitable.
It reached the boiling point in the Lawson Center when the final buzzer went off with FAMU on top of the Pirates 62-58. Beating Hampton (15-5, 5-2 MEAC) is the biggest upset in the program's history since the team made it to the NCAA Tournament four years ago.
Rattlers Women come up short against Hampton
For 14 minutes, the Florida A&M women's basketball team executed the game plan to perfection Monday night at the Lawson Center. Then, the Rattlers stopped getting rebounds and Hampton University began to find gaping holes in their man-defense.
By the time FAMU gathered itself it didn't have enough time to avoid a 59-47 loss on a night when a win would have made the difference between being in a first-place tie with the Pirates (13-6, 6-1) or where they have fallen to fourth place in the MEAC.

TALLAHASSEE, FLA – The Hampton University men’s basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped on Monday night, as the Pirates fell 62-58 to Florida A&M at the Lawson Center.
Junior guard Kwame Morgan II hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to pull Hampton within three, 58-55, before hitting a free throw with 15 seconds left to cut the score to 60-58. Yannick Crowder and Amin Stevens each hit a free throw down the stretch, and junior guard Christopher Tolson missed what would’ve been a game-tying 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining.

The Pirates' Kwame Morgan hit a 3 with 36 seconds left and a free throw with 15 left to bring the game to 60-58. The Rattlers' Yannick Crowder and Amin Stevens hit one free throw apiece, and the Pirates’ Christopher Tolson missed a game-tying 3 with nine seconds left.

Monday night was one of them. With 37.2 seconds on the clock and the Rattlers holding a three-possession lead on the top team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Harris was down to his white shirt and tie. On the other end, Hampton University's head coach Edward Joyner constantly wiped the sweat that had beaded up on his face, as if he knew his team's second conference loss was inevitable.
It reached the boiling point in the Lawson Center when the final buzzer went off with FAMU on top of the Pirates 62-58. Beating Hampton (15-5, 5-2 MEAC) is the biggest upset in the program's history since the team made it to the NCAA Tournament four years ago.
Rattlers Women come up short against Hampton
For 14 minutes, the Florida A&M women's basketball team executed the game plan to perfection Monday night at the Lawson Center. Then, the Rattlers stopped getting rebounds and Hampton University began to find gaping holes in their man-defense.
By the time FAMU gathered itself it didn't have enough time to avoid a 59-47 loss on a night when a win would have made the difference between being in a first-place tie with the Pirates (13-6, 6-1) or where they have fallen to fourth place in the MEAC.

In wild game, Hampton University holds off North Carolina A&T
HAMPTON, VA — In a frantic back-and-forth game that involved 11 ties and three lead changes, Hampton University defeated North Carolina A&T 82-77 Monday night at the HU Convocation Center.Junior guard Kwame Morgan led all scorers with a career-high 36 points, going 11-for-22 from the floor and hitting six 3-pointers. His short jumper from 24.1 seconds to play sealed the victory for HU (14-4, 4-1 MEAC). Junior guard Darrion Pellum, a Hampton High product, added 19 points while Charles Funches scored 12. Seven Pirates made the scoring column. Danny Agbelese grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Missed free throws ruin A&T's upset bid
HAMPTON, Va. — Thomas Coleman scored his 1,000th point and a few more, but N.C. A&T had no answer for Kwame Morgan, particularly in the second half Monday. Morgan scored 36 points — 21 in the second half — and fueled a 15-5 run that stretched a two-point lead into an 82-77 win in MEAC play at Hampton's Convocation Center. It was the best night of his career.
The Aggies (8-10, 3-2 in the MEAC) climbed back to within three at 76-73, but — typically on this evening — Morgan hit a 16-footer to establish a Hampton lead that couldn't be overcome.
HAMPTON 71, N.C. A&T 36
Hampton (12-5, 5-0 Mid Eastern Athletic Conference) trounced visiting N.C. A&T (6-9, 3-2) 71-36 Monday for the Pirates’ fourth straight win. Freshman Pirates guard Nicole Hamilton (of Phoebus) scored 18 of her career-high 23 points in the first half, and Quanneisha Perry grabbed 13 boards.

Saint Paul's hands WSSU first loss
LAWRENCEVILLE, Va.- Winston-Salem State's unbeaten season came to a halt Tuesday night with a 93-84 loss at St. Paul's. Even though both teams play in the CIAA, the game was designated as a nonconference game, giving Coach Bobby Collins of the Rams some solace."It didn't count in the conference standings, but we still didn't come ready to play, and that's disappointing," Collins said by telephone after the game. "St. Paul's just stepped it up when they had to, and we didn't make the plays. We missed a lot of easy layups, and they hit their free throws." WSSU fell to 6-1. St. Paul's improved to 3-4.
