TSU, Southern bank on rushing

Nashville, TN - The unknown factor is usually prominent in the first game of the season. But that’s not the case for Tennessee State and Southern, which meet tonight in the 13th annual John Merritt Classic at LP Field.

Southern’s second-year Coach Stump Mitchell was a running back in the NFL with the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals from 1981-89. TSU’s second-year Coach Rod Reed was a linebacker (1985-88), who became the Tigers’ all-time leading tackler (406). That kind of takes the guesswork out of what to expect.



“I don’t think there’s any question about how this game will play out,” Mitchell said. “I’m a running back, and I’m calling the plays. Rod’s a linebacker, and they’re going to try to stop the run. They play good defense, but we have to find ways to run the ball. We didn’t run the ball last year, but we’re going to this year.”

Mitchell said the personnel he inherited at Southern wasn’t suited to run the ball when he left the Washington Redskins as running-backs coach after the 2009 season.

Southern football highlights fall camps

BATON ROUGE — Student-athletes from three Southern University programs will return to Baton Rouge this week as fall camp opens in preparation for the 2011 campaigns in football, women's volleyball and women's soccer.

Eager to erase the lingering effects from last season's 2-9 record, head football coach Stump Mitchell will welcome his Southern Jaguars to fall camp Wednesday at the A.W. Mumford Fieldhouse as the Jaguars prepare for the 2011 season.

"There's no question we're excited (about the start of fall camp) with a lot of guys coming back with a lot of experience and a coaching staff that I feel will take us to the next level," said Mitchell. "We're just excited to get started."

The Jaguars first practice is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Thursday and is open to the public. The Jaguars kickoff their 2011 season in LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans, for the John Merrit Classic against Tennessee State at 6 p.m. Sept. 3.

Tennessee State Tigers Coach Rod Reed touts logo changes

A new look for helmets, names on uniforms, and more oversight on discipline are some of the changes new football Coach Rod Reed has put in place at Tennessee State. Reed revealed the helmet changes Monday at OVC Media Days. The Tigers were picked to finish fifth by the league's coaches and sports information directors. The new helmets will be white with a similar TSU logo on the sides to those the Tigers had on the blue helmets they've worn since the 1990s. But the logo will now be blue, outlined in red. There also will no longer be a stripe down the middle of the helmets.

Those helmets, however, won't be worn in the first game. TSU will have a throwback helmet look for the John Merritt Classic Sept. 4 against Alabama A&M. Those will be white with a large red T and smaller blue S and U, like those worn in the 1960s and '70s when Merritt was the coach.

"The plan is to wear those helmets that one game unless we score 50 points and get to feeling good about it and then we'll stay with the throwbacks the whole year," Reed said. "We just thought we would do that in commemoration of John Merritt. When my father (Robert) played here (1961-64) that's what they had on the helmets so I thought it'd be nice to throw out there."

TSU Tigers' 2009 Tentative Football Schedule Released

Tennessee State University will play an eleven-game football schedule for the 2009 season that features four home games and three “Classic” match-ups. The Tigers’ non-conference opponents consist of four traditional rivals, three from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (Alabama A&M, Jackson State, Southern) and one from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (Florida A&M). TSU’s seven-game Ohio Valley Conference schedule will consist of all OVC teams except Jacksonville State.

The 2009 season opens at home on Labor Day Week-end, September 5th, against Alabama A&M in the John Merritt Classic. The following week, TSU battles Jackson State at the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis, TN (9/12). Closing out September, the Tigers travel on succeeding week-ends to face Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA (9/19) and Florida A&M in Atlanta, GA (9/26) at the Atlanta Football Classic.

TSU opens Ohio Valley Conference play on October 3rd at home against Southeast Missouri, then travels to Richmond, Kentucky to battle 2008 OVC Champion Eastern Kentucky. The month of October sees TSU host Murray State (10/17) followed by an open date before traveling to Cookeville, TN facing Tennessee Tech (10/31). Three games in November begin with Homecoming (11/03) against Tennessee Martin followed by road games at Austin Peay State (11/14) and Eastern Illinois (11/21).

SU deals with short work week

The regular traveling need for the Southern University football team is three buses and an equipment truck. Thursday, though, the team had a fourth bus in its entourage.
That extra bus was for family members of coaches and administrators to get them to Nashville, Tenn., where Southern (0-1) will play Tennessee State (1-0) on Saturday night. This is a small part of making do after a hurricane.

Southern coach Pete Richardson did not want to leave behind his coaches’ families, many of whom are still without power in the wake of Hurricane Gustav. Concern for the families of the coaches and the players, along with the totality of a hectic week begun by Gustav’s Monday landfall, caused Richardson and new SU Chancellor Kofi Lomotey to meet Wednesday night after practice. Officials from both schools chatted that night, but in the end Richardson was able to agree to play the game, despite his misgivings.

TSU, Southern renew rivalry at Merritt Classic

Tennessee State fans and alumni are finally getting the game they want to see. The Tigers will take on old rival Southern University in the John Merritt Classic on Sept. 6 at LP Field. And make no mistake, it will be a battle — during the game and at halftime.

The schools’ competition between the football teams and the marching bands was a point of emphasis on Thursday at the annual news conference promoting the John Merritt Classic. “I don’t know who’s going to win the game, but I know who’s going to have the best halftime show,” said Southern athletic director Greg LaFleur to the good-natured jeers of the TSU fans and alums in attendance.

TSU athletic director Teresa Phillips then grabbed the microphone, saying, “We’re going to have to get a police escort for him.” This is the 10th year of the game that honors the legendary TSU coach, but it is the first game the Tigers will take on the Jaguars in the classic. The game will also be the teams’ first meeting since 1991.
