Charlotte, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith’s quarterback derby is now a three-man race.
True freshman Andrew Alexander has impressed coaches after a week of drills and is in line to contend for the starter’s job, head coach Steve Aycock said. Alexander, an Ardrey Kell High graduate, is battling redshirt freshman Maliek McCall and true freshman Keahn Wallace for playing time. McCall finished spring drills as the starter.
“It’s still up in the air,” Aycock said. “(Those) guys are fighting and pushing each other, but one guy that’s been standing out with the coaches is Andrew Alexander and he’s on Maliek McCall and Keahn Wallace’s heels like never before. He’s a take-charge kid…. He’s really grasping the game (offensive coordinator Maurice) Flowers has given him.”
Aycock said he wouldn’t rule out spreading playing time, but is leaning toward ...
Charlotte, NC -- Johnson C. Smith football coach Steve Aycock promises his Golden Bulls will get off to a fast start in 2011.
At the CIAA preseason media day in July, Aycock predicted Smith will win at least three of its first four games - a bold statement given the Bulls' 5-15 record in his first two seasons.
"I feel good about the young men who are coming back and the way they've dedicated themselves over the last six months," he said. "We'll see a difference come Sept. 3."
But will it be enough to move Smith to the middle of the pack in the CIAA South? Maybe, if the Bulls answer these questions:
1. Can the defense be fixed?
Former Carolina Panthers safety Mike Minter and Craig Cox are the new co-coordinators of a unit that allowed 39 points and 405 yards per game.
"From the defensive side, we've made some changes and are doing some things different and most definitely placing a lot of emphasis on stopping the run," Aycock said.

Charlotte, N.C. - Johnson C. Smith football coach Steve Aycock went out on a limb at last week’s CIAA roundup.
He guaranteed – twice – that the Golden Bulls would start the season 3-1, a bold prediction given JCSU’s combined 5-15 over Aycock’s first two seasons. The league’s coaches weren’t impressed, however, picking the Bulls to finish fifth in the six-team South Division.
But Aycock stands by his pronouncement.
“It’s not from an arrogance standpoint, it’s not being cocky,” he said Tuesday. “It’s just that I feel good about the young men who are coming back and the way they’ve dedicated themselves over the last six months. We’ll see a difference come Sept. 3.”
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Wednesday that Johnson C. Smith’s Leford Green and Abilene Christian’s Nick Jones was named the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Athletes of the Year. Green went undefeated and won the NCAA title at 400 meters while Jones helped Abilene Christian to a national team title with 18 points in the throws which included a third NCAA discus crown and a new championships record.
NATIONAL MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Leford Green, Johnson C. Smith University
Green, a senior from St. Catherine, Jamaica, finished the season undefeated and won the NCAA title at 400 meters. In this year’s outdoor championships, Green clocked 45.74 in the open event, topping the nearest competitor by a full second. In 2010, Green won the 400 hurdles at the NCAA meet, and finished sixth in the national final of the event this season. Green was also the third leg of Johnson C. Smith’s winning 4×400 relay that clocked 3:07.59 for a second-plus win. Green was also on the 4×100 squad that placed fifth nationally.
At his conference meet, Green earned 2011 CIAA Male Athlete of the Meet honors after winning the 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles, finishing second in the 200 meters, and running a leg on the Golden Bulls’ second-place 4×400-meter relay.
Johnson C. Smith will open its 2011 football season against West Virginia State.
The Golden Bulls will open their season Sept. 3 against the Yellow Jackets at McGirt Field, according to a revamped schedule on JCSU's website. The change became necessary when original opponent St. Paul's eliminated its entire athletics program earlier this month. As a result, the Tigers have been removed from CIAA membership, leaving the league with 12 schools.
JCSU officials opened the search for a new opponent shortly after St. Paul's announced its intention. Golden Bulls coach Steve Aycock and athletics director Steve Joyner confirmed JCSU was in contact with multiple Division II schools and one Division I program about filling the open date in order to keep its preseason schedule intact.

Johnson C. Smith recruited for defense in the latest class of football signees. The Golden Bulls signed 10 defenders among its 19 recruits, including four linemen to shore up a unit that allowed an average of 39 points per game last season and were near the bottom of the CIAA in rushing yardage allowed.
Three linemen are transferring from community colleges: Stephan Diggs (Feather River), Leon Minto (Nassau) and end Rinso Molitika (Los Angeles Valley). Diggs is from Rockingham.
JCSU also signed four defensive backs in its search for a pair of new starters: Marcus Teamer, a 5-10, 180-pound strong safety from McDonough (Md.) High; Michael Stroup, a safety from Waynesville Tuscola High; cornerback Frantz Charles (N.C. Tech) and safety Lance Harris from L.A. Pierce (Calif.) College, who had 31 tackles during an 8-3 campaign.

The Golden Bulls are in negotiations with multiple schools to fill a hole opened by St. Paul’s decision earlier this month to shut down its athletics program. Neither JCSU Athletics Director Steve Joyner nor head coach Steve Aycock would identify the schools contacted, but suggested a deal could be struck by next week to remain on a 10-game schedule.
“Nothing is concrete yet,” Aycock said. JCSU has contacted three non-CIAA schools about Sept. 3, including at least one Division I program, Joyner and Aycock said. The others are Division II teams. Schools in the South Atlantic, West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic conferences are in immediate proximity to Smith.
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball program has announced the signing of Reginald LaTrez Shuford and Marcus Walker for the 2011-12 season.
Reginald LaTrez Shuford also known as Trez Shuford is a 6'3, 170 lbs, point guard from nearby Hickory, North Carolina. Shuford played for Shawn Johnson at Hickory High School. In his senior year, Shuford led the Red Tornadoes to a 26-4 overall and 11-1 league record. He received all-conference and all-district honors for performance on the hardwood.

Shuford has been described as an athletic-slasher with great ball handling ability. He has a solid inside jumper, but like most young player could use more work. Shuford will have a familiar face in the backcourt; he and sophomore guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) were teammates at Hickory High.
“We're excited to have this young man come abroad; because of the versatility and rotation options he may provide,” said head men's basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. “Shuford is a good rebounder at his position, he gets up and down the floor well, and make good decisions with the basketball. He should immediately challenge our current guards for playing time and may allow us to move Trevin to the two-guard position in some situations.”

The seeds of Johnson C. Smith’s track and field championship were sown four years ago.
That’s when first-year Lennox Graham brought in world-class sprinters from his native Jamaica, Leford Green on the men’s side and Shermaine Williams on the women’s. From there, the Golden Bulls added pieces to the foundation, which bore fruit last week with the school’s first CIAA women’s title. Green won his third straight most valuable award with 33 individual points and JCSU’s men scored 119 points to finish second to national power St. Augustine’s with 176.5.

The Golden Bulls, who went 2-8 in 2010, wrapped up spring football drills Monday with an intrasquad scrimmage that resulted in an 18-18 tie. The focus is on building an attitude that produces success in 2011.
"The one thing we don't put into our family circle of trust is the poison of last year," coach Steve Aycock said. "We talk about things going forward, keeping our shoulders high and our eyes straight forward."
Smith returns a veteran core but must replace its top offensive players, three-time All-CIAA receiver Jeremy Franklin and quarterback Ryan Carter. Defensively, the Golden Bulls have to shore up a unit that allowed 39 points per game.
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University Department of Athletics has announced their 10-game football schedule for the 2011 season. The schedule features four home games, five road games, and one game played at a neutral location (to be determined).
JCSU will host four games at the Irwin Belk Complex on McGirt Field beginning with the season opener on Saturday, September 3rd against St. Paul's College at 4:00 p.m. These two last met during the 2009 season when the Golden Bulls held on for a 24-20 win over the Tigers inside the IBC.
Johnson C. Smith will stay at home in week two to face the Trojans of Virginia State University on Saturday, September 10th at 4:00 p.m. The next four week will be spent traveling as they compete against Brevard College, Davidson College, Winston-Salem State University, and Shaw University.
Brevard came to Charlotte last season and nipped out a 25-21 victory; JCSU hopes to return the favor in Brevard on Saturday, September 17th at 2:00 p.m. Davidson will be a first time opponent for J.C. Smith. The Wildcats compete in the Division I-AA Southern Conference (SoCon) and look to showcase their new artificial turf field during the Saturday, September 24th matchup at 7:00 p.m.
The Golden Bulls enter their divisional schedule when they square with Winston-Salem State on Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 p.m. That game is followed by challenging the defending CIAA Champion Shaw Bears on Saturday, October 8th at 4:00 p.m. Both opponents topped JCSU last season by at least 32 points in Charlotte.
Homecoming kicks off this season on Saturday, October 15th as they host Virginia Union University at 1:00 p.m. Johnson C. Smith will attempt to earn their first homecoming victory since 2008, when the contest was still played in Memorial Stadium.
JCSU will visit St. Augustine's College the following week on Saturday, October 22nd and will close out their home slate with Fayetteville State University on Saturday, October 29th at 4:00 p.m.
On Saturday, November 5th the third Annual Commemorative Classic will feature Livingstone College in the oldest black college football rivalry in the nation. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm, however a location is still being finalized. The 2011 CIAA Football Championship will take place on November 12th.

Johnson C. Smith will say goodbye to the athletes who put its track and field program on the national map Saturday.
Seniors Nada Al-Arahshun, Leford Green, Richard Harkness, Lakaevia Tyler, and Shermaine Williams will participate in their final home meet Saturday at the JCSU Invitational at the Irwin Belk Complex. They will be acknowledged before the start of competition at 10 a.m. Green, who has won three men’s national Division II championships during his career, was named national indoor athlete of the year. Williams has three national women’s titles. Both have competed for Jamaica in international competition.
Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University men's and women's outdoor track and field teams will host the 2011 JCSU Track Invitational on Saturday, April 9th inside the Irwin Belk Complex. This one-day event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. Johnson C. Smith will also honor their five senior track and field student-athletes (Nada Al-Arahshun, Leford Green, Richard Harkness, Lakaevia Tyler, and Shermaine Williams) to kickoff the event.
The Golden Bulls are coming off a successful indoor season in which 11 student-athletes earn All-American status at the 2011 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships held in Albuquerque, NM. Several school records and personal bests were set during the indoor season and the squad looks to repeat the efforts in the outdoor campaign
Auburn, AL – The Johnson C. Smith University women's and men's track and field teams won three events at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University on Saturday at the Hutsell-Rosen Track. Several Golden Bulls student-athletes improved their national rankings with their performances this weekend.
Senior Shermaine Williams (St. Andrew, Jamaica) claimed the crown in the women's 100m hurdles with a season best time of 13.40. Williams leads the NCAA DII ranking for this event. Freshman Naffene Briscoe (St. Catherine, Jamaica) hit a personal best and set a new school record with her time of 55.16 in the 400m. Briscoe crossed the finish line fifth and also leads the DII ranking for 400m. Briscoe took 11th in the 200m, clocking in at 24.77.
Johnson C. Smith’s spring football game will be held under the lights. The Golden Bulls will scrimmage April 11 at 7 p.m. at McGirt Field. The game is free and open to the public.
Smith went 2-8 in 2010 and must replace quarterback Ryan Carter (Harding High) and all-CIAA receiver Jeremy Franklin. The defense, which allowed an average of 39 points a game last season, also needs retooling.
“Football is a game of measurements and spring ball gives our coaching staff the chance to measure where we are as a team to this point,” head coach Steve Aycock said. “We have some kids that may step into new roles this season and this is a part of the preparation process.”
Charlotte, N.C. - An eight-loss campaign guarantees another offseason of change for Johnson C. Smith football.
The Golden Bulls, who won just two games and finished fifth in the six-team CIAA South, face challenges on both sides of the ball when spring drills open Friday. On offense, they must replace the most accomplished receiver in school history, Jeremy Franklin, and locate a play-making quarterback. Smith also needs to bulk up a defense that allowed an average of 39.9 points 405.5 per game in 2010.
Special teams need shoring up as well after allowing a school record eight blocked punts.

JCSU women's basketball made history by reaching the most wins in a season 26-4, and earned the 1st two regional victories for women's basketball at JCSU after a 74-69 win over Glenville State and West Liberty University.
Edinboro, PA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball captured a 78-72 overtime victory against West Liberty University (No. 3 seed) in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional semifinals on Saturday evening inside a frigid McComb Fieldhouse. JCSU improves to 26-4 overall and advance to the regional championship game on Monday, March 14th to face 2011 CIAA Tournament Champions, No. 8 Shaw University (23-11) at 7:00 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
Junior guard Terrica Jones (Raleigh, NC) splashed a three pointer at the 19:13 mark for the first J.C. Smith points and lead (3-2) of the game. However, the Hilltoppers recovered quickly and displayed some dangerous outside shooting throughout the first half. West Liberty held an advantage for the remainder of the opening and led 40-32 at halftime.
JCSU shot 33% (12-36) in the first half, compared to 40.6% (13-32) shooting from West Liberty. The Hilltoppers connected on 7 of their 17 three point attempts, but were out-rebounded 27-18. Junior All-CIAA guard LaQwesha Gamble (Winter Haven, FL) had most of the production with 10 points and seven rebounds at the break. Jones and senior guard Tyra Breaux (Baltimore, MD) pitched in seven points apiece.
Edinboro, PA – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team made school history with a 74-69 victory over Glenville State College (No. 7 seed) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament hosted by Edinboro University on Friday afternoon. JCSU improved to 25-4 overall and earned their first regional win in the history of the women's program. The Lady Golden Bulls advance to the semifinals to face West Liberty State College in McComb Field house at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th.
Entering this regional tournament with the highest seeding in JCSU history; the Lady Golden Bulls looked and played like a No. 2 seed. Glenville State continued a five-man substitution pattern, but Johnson C. Smith moved up the court with more energy and quickness. Despite eight lead changes in the opening, J.C. Smith maintained control and led 46-36 at halftime.
In first half, the Lady Golden Bulls shot 41.5% (17-41) from the floor compared to 33% (13-39) from Glenville State. The Pioneers lost the rebounding battle 34-20 and were beat 28-16 inside the paint. JCSU also shot 64.7% (11-17) from the free throw line; however Glenville converted on all six of their first half free throw attempts.
Johnson C. Smith is within a game of advancing to the NCAA Division II women’s Elite Eight.
The Golden Bulls beat West Liberty 78-72 in overtime Saturday in the Atlantic Regional semifinals on Saturday in Edinburgh, Pa. JCSU, the No. 2 seed, improved to 26-4 overall and advance to the regional championship game on Monday against CIAA rival and No. 8 Shaw at 7 p.m. Shaw beat Smith last week for the CIAA tournament championship.
“This season our team has been accountability for each other and themselves on and off the court, which has allowed us to strive for the common thread of competitive greatness,” Golden Bulls coach Vanessa Taylor said. “This is an exciting opportunity for our team, our University, and our conference; these young ladies have become pioneers and we want to go as far as we can.”

Charlotte, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team advance to the semifinals of the 2011 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament with an opening round 71-52 victory against Chowan University on Tuesday evening inside Time Warner Cable Arena. JCSU improves to 23-3 overall and play Bowie State University on Friday, March 4th at 3:00 p.m. in the TWC Arena.
Junior guard Terran Quattlebaum (Mitchellville, MD) was open on the wing. She got the pass, and didn't think twice. Quattlebaum let the 3-point shot fly and only drew net.
Eleven seconds into the game, the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Lions were ahead 3-0, and the rest of the game seemed almost as effortless as Quattlebaum's first jump shot as the Southern Division champion ran away from Chowan for the entire contest.
“I'm extremely proud of our team effort,” said Golden Bulls coach Vanessa Taylor, the CIAA Coach of the Year. “We just shot the ball extremely well in the first half.”
Chowan Falls to Johnson C. Smith in CIAA Tournament
CHARLOTTE, NC – After five minutes of play, the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University held a 13-0 lead over Chowan in the second round of the CIAA Tournament. That early lead, paired with 16 first half turnovers, proved to be the difference in the game, as the Hawks could not mount another second half comeback in a 71-52 loss to the Lady Golden Bulls.
Chowan missed their first five shots and committed six turnovers in those opening five minutes, leading to the early deficit. Ransheda Jennings put Chowan on the board at the 14:54 mark with a layup to cut the JCSU lead to 13-2. At the 12:43 mark of the half, the Lady Golden Bulls held a 17-2 advantage. The Hawks, as they have done many times before, did not panic and mounted a furious comeback.

The Livingstone men’s basketball team picked up a crucial divisional victory Saturday, downing the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls 82-65 and earning the third seed out of the Southern Division for the 2011 CIAA tournament.
Trone Jackson led the Blue Bears with 17 points off the bench accompanied by Nasir Austin who scored 15 points and had five rebounds. Greg Henry was the leading scorer among the starters with 12 points to go with his seven rebounds.
Livingstone (14-11, 9-8) will open the conference tournament on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against St. Paul’s College who is the sixth seed out of the CIAA Northern Division.
SALISBURY, N.C. - Saturday was Senior Night at Livingstone, but the Blue Bears' subs were the heroes. Livingstone's bench poured in 51 points during an 82-65 win against Johnson C. Smith at Trent Gym. Livingstone (14-11, 5-5) earned the CIAA South Division's third seed for this week's league tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena and dropped arch rival J.C. Smith (15-10, 4-6) to fourth.
"Before the game even started, coach (James Stinson) told us to come out and play 40 minutes of basketball and execute," said Livingstone reserve forward Nasir Austin, who scored 15 points with 6-for-11 shooting. "If we do that, it's easy for us to win."
Andrew Jackson saved the day, and helped re-fuel a rivalry with Johnson C. Smith as he hit a buzzer-beating 35-foot jumper in a 78-77 victory for Winston-Salem State. In front of a packed house of 3,200 at the Gaines Center on Monday night the Rams kept a hold of their first-place grip in the CIAA’s Southern Division. But it was far from easy.
“I know I beat the clock,” said Jackson, a senior guard who took Marcus Wells pass from midcourt and then hit the long jumper. The Rams coughed up the lead with sloppy play near the end and the Bulls had a 77-75 lead with three seconds left. With 1:18 left the Rams were up by five but the Bulls never gave up and came charging back.
Winston Salem, NC – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team remains unbeaten on the road after a 64-60 win over Winston-Salem State University on Monday evening inside the C.E. Gaines Center on the campus of WSSU. JCSU improves to 17-1 overall, 10-1 in the CIAA, and 3-0 in the division; while the Lady Rams move to 12-7 overall, 7-3 in the conference, and 2-1 in the Southern.
Coming into this game, there were a few interesting storylines. First, this was the first contest between JCSU and Winston-Salem State since January 2007; after WSSU ventured out of the CIAA to Division I-AA competition. WSSU head women's coach Stephen Joyner, Jr. has several ties to Johnson C. Smith University.
Joyner, Jr. is an alum of JCSU and former student-athlete, he served two seasons as the assistant women's basketball coach (under current JCSU head women's coach Vanessa Taylor), and he is the son of JCSU Director of Athletics and head men's basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Sr. Despite all those facts, JCSU and WSSU were battling for the top spot in the CIAA Southern Division.
The Golden Bulls won their sixth straight game Wednesday with a 69-61 CIAA victory against Lincoln (Pa.) at Grady Cole Center. Smith (8-4, 4-0 CIAA) struggled to put the Lions away in a game that was postponed from Monday because of weather.
Ultimately, the backcourt combination of Trevin Parks (29 points) and James Otey (17 points) were enough to compensate for Ronald Thornhill's 0-for-6 shooting and Lincoln's (1-9, 0-3) upset bid.
Sparked by Trevin Parks and James Otey, Johnson C. Smith withstood a furious comeback to defeat Lincoln (Pa.) in a CIAA contest at Grady Cole Center in Charlotte Wednesday.
