Kentucky State Thorobreds rallies past Fort Valley State Wildcats

Frankfort, Kentucky -- The Kentucky State Thorobreds utilized a three-headed monster at running back in senior Andrew Ramsey and redshirt freshmen Jacquise Lockett and Justin Williams, and they led KSU to a thrilling, 25-24, homecoming victory over the Fort Valley State Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Ramsey came into the game as clearly KSU’s leading rusher and struggled versus FVSU, with just 28 yards on 13 tries, but Wlliams and Lockett picked up the slack big time.

Williams gained 176 yards on 20 carries; Lockett added 138 yards on 14 tries with two touchdowns, and junior quarterback Martez James complemented all of the above with 37 yards on eight tries, including the game-winning TD from 17 yards out with just over two minutes to go.

Kentucky State improved to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the SIAC, while a very game Fort Valley team fell to 2-4 and 0-3. The Thorobreds piled up 424 yards of total offense, including 372 on the ground.

Albany State Runs Circles Around Kentucky State

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Five weeks in to the 2011 Albany State football year and the Golden Rams have their first complete victory of the season.

ASU clicked in all facets of the game defeating Kentucky State 57-31 in the 28th Annual Circle City Classic from Indianapolis. The Golden Rams led at the half 29-13, and blew it open in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns from unexpected outlets.

Rams cornerback Brandon Brown returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Rams immediately gave up a 91 yard kick-off return for a touchdown before Orion Ponder responded with an 89 yard touchdown return.

Defense sets tone for Albany State in Circle City Classic

The defense set the tone early and the offense took over late for Albany State University in its first Circle City Classic appearance Saturday afternoon. The Golden Rams forced three first-quarter turnovers in a 57-31 victory over Kentucky State at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"It was a great atmosphere and I think the guys rose to the occasion," Golden Rams coach Mike White said.

The win is the Georgia school's eighth straight over the Thorobreds. The Golden Rams came within two points of matching the Classic record for points. Florida A&M scored 59 points against Hampton in 1996.

"We've got the receivers, we've got the running backs, we're just a good offensive team," Golden Rams receiver Orion Ponder said.

Circle City Classic notebook: Thorobreds, Golden Rams enjoy their first appearance

Kentucky State football coach Wayne Dickens wasn't pleased with his team's performance Saturday, but he was happy about the opportunity to play in the Circle City Classic for the first time.

Albany State beat the Thorobreds 57-31 in front of an announced crowd of 36,831 at Lucas Oil Stadium. "This is a great stadium and you can't ask for a better atmosphere," said Dickens, whose previous trip to Lucas Oil Stadium was to watch the NFL Scouting Combine.

Albany State was also making its first appearance in the Classic.  Golden Rams coach Mike White said the chance to play on the same field as the Indianapolis Colts was well worth the 12-hour bus ride his team made from its campus in Georgia.

Kentucky State Thorobreds rolls past Kentucky Wesleyan

Owensboro, Kentucky - Kentucky State’s football team improved to 3-1 with a 23-7 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday night in Owensboro. KWC (0-4) scored the game’s first points on a 55-yard run by Thomas Gordon in the first quarter. Jacob Jackson kicked the extra point, and the Panthers led 7-0 at the end of the period. After that it was all Kentucky State.

A 28-yard field goal by Cade Berryman cut Wesleyan’s lead to four points early in the second quarter, and a 2-yard touchdown pass from Jerrel Noland to Raphael Amey just 11 seconds before halftime gave the Thorobreds a 10-7 lead at the break.

KSU added a touchdown in each of the last two quarters. Jacquis Lockett scored on a 9-yard run in the third, and JacQuan Persley returned a fumble recovery 65 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Berryman went 2-for-3 on extra point attempts with his last one getting blocked.

Stillman slips by Kentucky State

Frankfort, Kentucky - The Kentucky State football team channeled the spirit of Santa Claus Saturday night against Stillman College at Alumni Stadium. That was the assessment from KSU coach Wayne Dickens after the Thorobreds (2-1) fell 31-29 to the Tigers.

“We gave them a laundry basket full of gifts today,” he said. “You can’t expect to do that against a good team and win. Our guys have to learn that lesson, and when it you learn it, it’s painful.”

The basket of gifts included a 72-yard punt return touchdown by Raphael Amey that was called back for unnecessary roughness and a failed third-down conversion near the end of the first half that gave Stillman the ball back and allowed the Tigers to score.

There was also an uncharacteristic missed extra point by Cade Berryman that forced K-State to go for a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, which it failed to convert. The two failed PAT tries would prove extremely costly in a 2-point defeat.

“I’m afraid when we go back and watch this film, we’ll see a lot of things that we just gave them,” Dickens said. “We decided to play Santa Claus. It’s OK to do that in December, but not now.”

Senior powers Morehouse Tigers golf to victory

Olajuwon Ajanaku can finally cut his hair. The Morehouse College senior wanted to wait until he won a tournament, and his three-round total of 8-over-par 224 was more than enough as Ajanaku placed first individually and his team won the SIAC Golf Classic at par-72 Jones Creek Golf Club on Wednesday.

"I've never seen this much hair on my face," Ajanaku said with a smile.

Morehouse had four of the top five scorers as it ended at 69-over-par for a comfortable victory. The victory gave Bill Lewis coach of the year honors as Morehouse won for the third consecutive year. Benedict College came in second at 135-over and Kentucky State grabbed third at 182-over. Paine College was next in fourth place at 226-over and LeMoyne-Owen College rounded out the team scores at 370-over.

Legendary Alcorn State Coach Davey L. Whitney Inducted into National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame

2010 National Collegiate Basketball HoF Davey L. Whitney
Alcorn State University legendary Coach Davey Whitney was among eight inductees to the 2010 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class on Sunday, November 21, 2010.

His teams won 711 games in 35 years of coaching but Davey Whitney did so much more than win
basketball games. The “Wiz”, who earned more letters than any other athlete at Kentucky State University, brought his Alcorn State University program to heights that never seemed possible.

The Braves dominated the Southwestern Athletic Conference with nine championships and little recognition until 1979, when Whitney guided his team to a berth in the NIT, one of the first for a historically black institution. Alcorn also upset in-state rival Mississippi State in the opening round.

The next year, Alcorn earned a berth in the NCAA tournament, one of four for Whitney coached teams, and topped South Alabama in the opening round. USA Basketball has recognized Whitney’s coaching talents on several national teams and he was the recipient of the NCAA’s first Journey Award in 1972.

Whitney’s coach teams won a total of 12 SWAC championships. Whitney’s Alcorn State Braves became the first historically black college team to win an NIT game, and one year later, Alcorn became the first historically black college to win an NCAA Tournament game.

Whitney started his coaching career at Burt High School in Nashville, Tenn., and coached at Texas Southern for five years before moving to Alcorn State University.

K-State's comeback falls short; Tuskegee 45, KSU 21

Kentucky State entered the fourth quarter within a touchdown of SIAC power Tuskegee Saturday at Cleve L. Abbott Stadium in Tuskegee, Ala. Then the Golden Tigers shut the door. Seventeen unanswered points by Tuskegee crushed the Thorobreds’ hopes for an upset as the Golden Tigers pulled away for a 45-21 win.

With the score 27-21, KSU had possession of the ball with a chance to tie the game late in the third quarter after Daeron Williams forced a Tuskegee fumble and Grandson Brown recovered the ball at the KSU 5. The Breds went three-and-out, however, giving Tuskegee prime field position after Chris Spalding’s 43-yard punt.

Albany State Rams open with rout of Kentucky State Thorobreds

FRANFORT, Ky. — Still looking for a quarterback at Albany State? Well, the Rams, who have been trying to decide for months who would be their starting QB, might have found the answer Saturday night — in of all places, Kentucky.

That’s where Stanley Jennings took over in the season and SIAC opener against Kentucky State. The Rams played both QBs but Jennings had the big night, completing 13-of-19 for 267 of Albany State’s 280 yards of passing offense, and he also threw three TD passes to help the Rams rip Kentucky State, 42-12.

“He made some good throws, and our offense had 418 yards of offense,’’ said Rams offensive coordinator Steve Smith, who was reached by phone after efforts to reach head coach Mike White were unsuccessful late Saturday night. “We (definitely looked) OK,’’ Smith said. “We started off slow and then we picked it up in the second half.’’

Former NSU men's coach Mitchell dies at 74

Lucias T. Mitchell, who coached Norfolk State's men's basketball team after winning three national championships at Kentucky State, died Tuesday night after a lengthy illness. He was 74 and a graduate of Jackson State University. An important figure in college basketball in the 1970s at Kentucky State, Mitchell didn't find the same success at Norfolk State. Despite winning 61 games in three seasons, he was replaced in 1981. He never coached again.

Mitchell remained with the school until retiring in 2007 as a professor of health and safety and director of driver education. Until recently, he frequently could be found at local college games, where he assessed talent for the NBA.

Kentucky State's three straight Division II NAIA championships put Mitchell and the school on the basketball map. Two of Mitchell's players -
Elmore Smith and Travis Grant - became first-round NBA draft picks, a rarity for Division II players. At Alabama State, Kentucky State and NSU, Mitchell compiled a 325-103 record, a .759 winning percentage, making him the sixth winningest coach in NCAA Division II history.

In 2008, Kentucky State invited Mitchell for a ceremony in which the school named the basketball court after its all-time winningest coach. Mitchell was 1 of 3 coaches in college history to win three straight national titles, the others being UCLA's John Wooden and John McLendon of Tennessee State. "I've had a load of great memories in my career," he said before being honored by Kentucky State, "and I put this right on the top." Mitchell did not feel as warmly received at Norfolk State in 1978. "I probably shouldn't have come," Mitchell said years later. "They weren't ready for me."
