Kentucky State rolls past Lane

KSU Coach Wayne Dickens

LOUISVILLE, KY – Kentucky State’s football team evened its overall and SIAC record at 1-1 with a 27-14 victory over Lane College Saturday in the Thoroughbred Classic. The game was played at Central High School. Lane (0-2, 0-2) had the first score of the game and led 8-6 in the first quarter, but it was all KSU after that as the Thorobreds took a 27-8 halftime lead.

K-State quarterback Jerrell Noland was 15-for-19 passing with four touchdown passes and no interceptions. His first touchdown pass was 11 yards to Shannon Frieson with 5:34 left in the first quarter. That tied the game at 6-6, with Lane having scored three minutes earlier on a 9-yard run by Marcus Woods.

Chris Spalding’s point-after kick was blocked, and Lane’s Travis Terry returned it for a safety, putting Lane ahead 8-6.

Turnovers loom large in Lane loss to Clark Atlanta

Jackson, TN - First-year Lane coach Derrick Burroughs said last week that if the players buy into the new system and attitude, the Dragons will have a chance in the fourth quarter. The Dragons appeared to buy in and had their chance in the final period, but an old bugaboo surfaced — turnovers.

Clark Atlanta score two defensive touchdowns in less than a minute, changing a 6-6 tie into a 20-6 lead, which was the final score of Burroughs' first game as a head coach Saturday night at Lane Field. Redshirt freshman quarterback Tahj Dent threw an interception to Michael Bradshaw, who returned the pick 51 yards for the score to give the Panthers a 13-6 lead with 10:34 remaining. Dent rebounded with a 28-yard run to place the Dragons in Panther territory at the 37-yard line. But a Panthers' defender blew up an attempted handoff, causing a fumble that Andre Wicker returned 63 yards for a touchdown and a 20-6 lead.

Lane College confident in new coach‎

One word permeated Lane College's media day Saturday morning at Lane Field (formerly Rothrock Stadium) — change. Lane has a new head coach in Derrick Burroughs, a new staff except for wide receivers coach Taniskha Hoskins and many new faces on the field.

But coaches and players said the most important aspect of the new season is a change in attitude. Lane went 0-10 last season and has lost 11 straight games dating to 2008. Defensive back Patrick Morrison said nobody wants to experience that again.

"We've got new players, new starters and a new attitude going into this season," Morrison said. "As a defensive captain, a lot of things fall on my shoulders, but everybody is taking responsibility for their actions."

Lane College Announces 2010 Football Schedule

Lane College announced its 2010 football schedule Tuesday, and it will play five of its 10 games at Rothrock Stadium. The Dragons start their season in front of their home crowd Aug. 28 against Clark Atlanta in what will be coach Derrick Burroughs first game. Burroughs takes over for former coach Trent Boykin, who now coaches the West Tennessee War Eagles, a semipro football team in Jackson. Nine games are within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with its lone non-conference game at Ohio Valley Conference member Tennessee Tech. The Dragons haven't won since late 2008 after going 0-10 in 2009.

The Dragons won't have defensive back Isaiah Scott when the season starts after Scott transferred to NCAA Division III Mount Union, a 10-time national champion. The 5-foot-9 defensive back was second on the team with 45 tackles as a freshman this past season. Scott had three interceptions, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
