Where Are They Now? MEAC player of the year to make D-League debut

For Reggie Holmes, father might prove to know best in this situation, too.

After finishing his career as Morgan State's all-time leading scorer with 2,051 points last season, Holmes ended up going overseas to play in Morocco. His father, Mark, thought Reggie should have tried something else instead.

"He wanted me to go to the D-League from the jump," Holmes said. "I was like, 'Nah!' and he said, 'You're grown now.' "

With things not going to his full liking overseas, Holmes, 23, has decided to give his dad's suggestion a shot. Holmes will make his D-League debut for the Erie BayHawks in their 7 p.m. game today against the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-18) at Tullio Arena. OK, Dad, he'll give this a shot.

Morgan State Bears Knocks Off WSSU Rams for 11th Straight Win

Coach Todd Bozeman Bears continues to roll -- to 19th win of season (19-7, 10-0 MEAC).

BALTIMORE, Md. – Reggie Holmes scored 26 points in Morgan State’s 79-65 win over non-conference opponent Winston-Salem State on Saturday that extended the Bears’ winning streak to 11 games. “We’re happy about the victory,” Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman said after the Bears (19-7, 10-0) improved to 8-0 at Hill Field House this season. “You value any win you get in Division I, the tough part is playing a team like this (non-conference) in the middle of your conference season. I’m just glad we were able to pull through.”

Morgan State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but the Rams woke up and trimmed the lead to 13-10 with 12:23 left in the first half. DeWayne Jackson ignited a 10-3 spurt by scoring seven points during a four minute stretch to help give the Bears a 23-13 lead. The Bears went into the intermission with a 42-24 lead. Holmes, who entered the game ranked among the nation's leading scorers (22.2 ppg), dropped in 15 points in the first half, and surpassed Yarharborough Roberts as the No. 3 all-time leading scorer in Morgan State history. The senior finished the contest with 26 points (13-15 FT) and has amassed 1,837 points for his career.

Morgan State's missing the point with Bozeman

Morgan State president Earl S. Richardson got creative three years ago when he hired banished coach Todd Bozeman to resurrect a destitute basketball program. Now he needs to get creative again to save his basketball program. Despite attempts to get an extension, Bozeman has completed the three years on his contract and is free to leave. That Morgan -- and Richardson -- have put themselves in this position seems unthinkable. The school had one winning season (15-14, at that) in 26 years before Bozeman arrived.

Another historic first for the MEAC -- Coach Todd Bozeman, 2009 Hugh Durham Award as the outstanding mid-major coach in the country. It's a sad state of affairs that Morgan State does not have Bozeman under contract.

The Bears have won back-to-back MEAC regular season championships the last two years, and this season went to their first-ever NCAA Division I tournament. The NCAA bid has earned Bozeman the Hugh Durham Award as the outstanding mid-major coach in the country, announced today. Morgan doesn't appear to appreciate what that means, or the attention that brought. They are quibbling over an extension that has taken far too long to resolve. Bozeman won't speak to negotiations, preferring to take the high road. But sources indicate the sticking point is more about benefits than salary.

His salary is sub-par, even by MEAC standards, however. His original contract called for $135,000 in annual salary, with a bonus of $25,000 for making the NCAA tournament. It is believed that he received a $10,000 raise last season after winning 22 games. That would put this year's earnings at $170,000.

Kately making bear tracks from California to Baltimore

Photo: Morgan State forward Marquise Kately is third in scoring for the Bears, averaging 12.6 points per game.

Even more than 3,000 miles from home, Marquise Kately couldn’t be more comfortable playing at Morgan State.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward from San Francisco is one of three Bears players with ties to California, lured to Baltimore by Morgan State coach Todd Bozeman, who spent four seasons coaching at the University of California in the 1990s.
