Hampton 77, Colorado State 75

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Hampton’s Kwame Morgan tallied 29 points, none bigger than the final three, as the junior guard knocked down a trey with 0.8 seconds left, to defeat Colorado State, 77-75, snapping the Rams’ six-game win streak.

Colorado State trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half, but fought back to take their first lead, 62-61, with 7:20 left to play in the contest. And with CSU clinging to a one-point lead, 75-74, with 7.3 seconds left, Morgan’s shot all but ended the game. The Rams’ ensuing inbound was deflected back out of bounds and when they got the ball in play, Travis Franklin’s desperation heave with 0.4 left came up well short.

The Rams committed a season-worst 18 turnovers, and the Pirates converted those extra possessions into 23 points. With the loss, Colorado State falls to 10-4 on the season while Hampton improves to 11-3.

MORGAN SHOOTS PIRATES PAST RAMS

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Hampton University junior guard Kwame Morgan hit a 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds remaining to lift the men’s basketball team past Colorado State 77-75 on Saturday in the final day of the Hilltop Classic at War Memorial Gym.

It was Morgan’s second game-winning trey of the season; he also hit the game-winner in the closing seconds on Dec. 22 against Liberty. Morgan (Largo, Md.) scored a career-high 29 points on 8-for-19 shooting and 6-for-14 from 3-point range in keying Hampton’s fourth win in its last five games. Hampton’s win also snapped Colorado State’s six-game winning streak.

Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored 17 points and dished out a team-high four assists. Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior guard Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) each added 10 points, with Funches adding a team-high eight rebounds.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico head football coach Mike Locksley has announced his coaching staff for the 2009 season. All nine position coaches/coordinators as well as football strength and conditioning coach Troy Hatton are beginning their first year at New Mexico. Locksley was named the 29th head football coach at UNM on Dec. 9, 2008. It's a diverse staff with five coaches boasting over 15 years of experience and four coaches age 31 and younger.

"I've always said that the first mark of leadership is a man who can lead himself and this group of coaches at the University of New Mexico exemplify that quality of leadership. After a two year paid holiday by Florida A&M, former Rattlers head coach Rubin Carter has signed on as the Lobos new defensive line coach for 2009.

Rubin Carter (Miami, 1975) - Defensive Line

• 21st year as a collegiate and professional coach (age 56).
• Most recently head coach at Florida A&M (2005-07) - Combined record of 16-17, but was 13-9 his first two seasons.
• NFL defensive line coach for the New York Jets (2001-03), Washington Redskins (1999-2000) and Denver Broncos (1987-88) - Coached Pro Bowl players John Abraham, Shawn Ellis, Marco Coleman, Greg Kragen, Rulon Jones and Karl Mecklenburg.
• Defensive line coach at Temple (2004), Maryland (1997-98) and San Jose State (1995-96) - Coached on the same staff with Mike Locksley at Maryland and Toby Neinas at Temple.
• Defensive coordinator and strength & conditioning coach at Howard University (1989-93) - Bison led Division I-AA in total defense and scoring defense in 1989 .
• 12-year defensive tackle for the Denver Broncos (1975-86) - Played on five AFC West Championship teams and in two Super Bowls (1978, 1987) as a key member of the Broncos' famed "Orange Crush" defense.

SDSU Aztecs pummel road-weary (UAPB) foes

UAPB first year head coach George Ivory accepts that economic reality dictates that the Golden Lions play all of their OOC games on the road for a paycheck to support the basketball program. Results: 1-10 record!

They are opponents that pose minimal risk of marring one's record but offer little reward in terms of RPI. They are mercenaries bouncing from gym to gym, picking up paychecks while paying dearly in the process. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which has yet to work up so much as a bead of sweat in its own building this year, playing its first 11 games on the road, exited another town in tatters last night in being leveled by San Diego State 93-61.

“These are hard games for coaches, because you want to make sure your players are prepared mentally,” Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said. “Often times, players look at (opponents') records and they come out and don't perform.” Before 4,441 at Cox Arena, SDSU improved to 10-3, matching its best record after 13 games since 1984-85. The road-weary Golden Lions, preseason favorites to win the Southwest Athletic Conference, fell to 1-11.
