Alonzo Lee era dawns at North Carolina A&T

Lee signed a four-year contract that will pay him $145,000 annually, said he was "ordained to be here, because I walk in faith."

GREENSBORO -- For all the weighty matters that lie ahead for Alonzo Lee -- implementing a new offense and defense, completing his staff, meeting with current players and recruits -- his immediate priority is decidedly mundane. Lee, introduced Friday as the head football coach of N.C. A&T, has a skeleton staff of coaches who have been in limbo throughout the university's prolonged search to replace Lee Fobbs. He plans to provide them with a schedule and offseason calendar as quickly as possible. That's because Lee, who is known among his peers for his organization and attention to detail, has much to accomplish this month, with 19 recruits paying a visit to A&T this weekend and the national signing day looming Feb. 4.

And there is no time to waste regarding the chore that might come to define his coaching tenure -- weeding out a small group of football players perceived by many last season as quitters and replacing them with athletes who fit his mold of tough, relentless Aggies. "There are a lot of things that haven't been done, but I can promise you we'll get them done and before the next season," Lee said. "And come next season we'll have some men who will fight for four quarters."

DSU's defense makes it look easy over NCAT

DOVER, DE -- None of them are easy. According to Delaware State linebacker Josh Pope, they just look easy. He was talking about turnovers, but he could have been talking about Delaware State's victory on Saturday, too. Pope contributed in forcing four turnovers to give the Hornets a 42-7 homecoming victory over North Carolina A&T before 6,089 bundled-up spectators on a chilly afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

Delaware State's defense generated one fumble and three interceptions. Pope's second-quarter forced fumble set up a touchdown as Delaware State earned its most lopsided victory of the season and second straight win in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
"I don't think I'd say they were easy," Pope said. "These turnovers came on pure discipline. It was about being where you're supposed to be. There was so much energy over the game. It's about looking at reads and assignments. I think that's only gotten better for us."

North Carolina A&T: Playing With Purpose

N.C. A&T will honor fallen teammate while trying to end long losing streak

N.C. A&T's 27-game losing streak meant nothing in late May. The Aggies had more to think about than football, after one of their most popular players -- offensive lineman Chad Wiley -- collapsed after a routine workout May 27 and died the next day of complications from heat-related illness. "We as his brothers are going to miss him," said Tim Shropshire, a close friend and teammate.

The Aggies want to play well this season in honor of Wiley, who had been a two-year starter. They also want to end their losing streak, currently the NCAA's longest. "They had tremendous respect for Chad," Coach Lee Fobbs said. "I think they are going to play like wild bandits for him." Optimism is high, because for the first time in his three seasons at A&T, Fobbs has veteran leaders he can count on.

North Carolina A&T football player dies from heat illness complications

Greensboro, N.C. — A senior offensive lineman on the North Carolina A&T State University football team died Wednesday from complications of heat illness, school officials said.

Chad Wiley, 22, collapsed Tuesday after a supervised voluntary workout on campus, officials said. An A&T athletic trainer treated Wiley on the field before he was transported to Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A&T officials said Wednesday afternoon that Wiley had been running hills during a workout when he became dizzy. A trainer gave him water and he continued his workout. He lost consciousness inside the training room.
