MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Tim Jones homered in the eighth to break a 3-3 tie and Tim Schalch added a couple insurance runs in the ninth to lead Florida A&M (14-18) past Alabama State 6-3 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday.
Schalch also picked up the win after pitching a complete game on the mound. He held the Hornets (13-16) scoreless and with only three hits until the seventh when ASU scored three runs to tie the game. After Jones' homer in the eighth put the Rattlers up 4-3, Schalch doubled home Jared Grace and Jared Jeffries for the final tally.
The fourth annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge is set for Aug. 31 and, for the first time, the football game won't be held at Legion Field.
The game is moving to Orlando but the move was not unexpected because, from the birth of the event that is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television, the plan was to hold the game on a rotating basis in the footprint of each of the two historically black college conferences.
Along with leaving SWAC country, the game also picked up Walt Disney Resort as presenting sponsor for the three-year deal.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Howard University football team will close out its 2008 spring schedule with the spring game at Greene Stadium on Saturday, April 19. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
Head Coach Carey Bailey and his staff will split the squad into two teams and run an offense/defense format. "We've had a very good spring and are looking forward to finishing on a strong note on Saturday," Bailey said.
Bailey, who is completing his first season with Howard, and the Bison will open the 2008 season on September 6 at home versus cross town rival Georgetown University.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Morgan State University head football coach Donald Hill-Eley is leading his team through the last few days of Spring practice in preparation for Friday's annual Blue & Orange scrimmage. The game will be played at Hughes Stadium.
“The purpose of the scrimmage is to help our young men gain an understanding of our schemes,” said Hill. “It will also enable the coaching staff to evaluate the depth of our team.”
The scrimmage will pit the offense versus the defense with a scoring system in place to determine the outcome.
The annual Blue & Orange scrimmage will kick-off Friday, April 18th at 6 p.m. at Hughes Stadium. Admission is free.
The Florida A&M University committee charged with finding a new women’s basketball coach will meet today with the returning players, according to Athletic Director William Hayes. Debra Clark, coach of the Lady Rattlers for the last seven years, was informed on March 25 that her contract would not be renewed. FAMU finished the season 14-17. Clark’s overall record at FAMU was 100-109.
Twelve of the 15 players on the 2007-08 team will return for the Lady Rattlers. Their season ended with a 76-65 loss to North Carolina A&T in the quarterfinals of the MEAC tournament. Today’s meeting will be the second time the search committee has convened, Hayes said. Rosalind Fuse-Hall, chief of staff for FAMU President James Ammons, is chairwoman of the search committee.

DOVER, DE- The Hornets split the doubeleheader against FAMU today, losing the first game 7-4 and winning the second game 10-4 at Soldier Field. The Hornets improved their record to 11-20 and 6-2 in the MEAC while the Rattlers record is now 10-15 and 3-5 in the MEAC.
The Hornets tied the first game 4-4 in the fourth inning with a solo homeruns by both Jose Sanchez and Jamie Friel while Troy Drummond drove in two runs off a double to right field. However, the Hornets were unable to score the rest of the game off of Rattlers starter Miguel Parga.
The Rattlers came back and scored two more runs in the 7th inning and took the lead for good when Corey McFadden hit a two-run homerun to right field. The Rattlers won the game 7-4.
Leading offensively for the Rattlers were Jared Jeffries, Corey McFadden and Timothy Schalch. Jeffries went 3-for-5 with 1 run and 2 RBI's. McFadden and Schalch also contributed 2 RBI's on the day.

Southern University athletes and well as several area high school standouts fared well at the 2008 Pelican Relays held at Southern’s A.W. Mumford Stadium on Saturday. In team standings, Southern finished second behind Grambling University on the women’s side, while the Jaguars won the men’s division. Northside won the high school girls division while Scotlandville finished first in the boys division.
Finishing first for the Jaguars in the college division, were India Anderson in the women’s long jump (5Ø feet), Jason House in the men’s high jump (2.1 meters), the men’s 1,600 sprint medley relay ‘A’ team (3:29.50), the men’s distance medley ‘A’ team (10:38.97), the women’s 1,600 relay ‘A’ team (3:49.01) and the men’s 1,600 relay ‘A’ team (3:15.40).

The title is the first NCAA National Championship women's titleever at the DI level by a historically black college or university (HBCU) and the first time a woman coach has won a bowling championship.

Maryland-Eastern Shore made NCAA bowling history Saturday night as it captured its first NCAA Women’s Bowling title since the sport’s NCAA sanction in 2004. Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Head Coach Sharon Brummel also became the first woman head coach to lead her team to a title.
“Somebody told me I was the first woman to win a championship,” Brummel said. “We’ve been to all five championships and finally a woman wins. It’s a wonderful feeling, it really is.”
The Hawks fought to be in the championship, as they were down three games to Vanderbilt in this afternoon’s elimination match. Momentum shifted the Hawk’s way and Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated Vanderbilt to contend for the championship.
“I’m speechless,” Brummel said. “After last year I felt that we were contending for the championship. Today, these young ladies fought. When were bowling against Vanderbilt earlier today and we were down three games, it got a little scary. Then Jessica Worsley decides to pick up a 2-10 split and it just seemed to change the whole momentum of the game and they came out fighting today when we were starting out in the championship.”
“I guess we all wanted to win,” Brommel said. “Jessica’s been here the whole four years. She’s gone to four national championships and on her way out she wanted to go out as a champion and she really went out as a champion.”

“It was just a dream even making the finals last year and finishing second,” Worsley said. “Most people can’t even said they’ve done that in their career. Just going out on top and finishing first my senior year, words can’t describe how great that feels. I couldn’t have asked for a better coaching staff or team to finish my career with and winning the national championship was just the icing on the cake.”
Maryland-Eastern Shore claimed the title with a 4-2 win over Arkansas State. The Hawks took an early lead in the first game, as Arkansas State had two open frames to start the game. However, Arkansas State came on strong during the fourth frame, as sophomore Maggie Adams started a series of six strikes for the Indians. Maryland-Eastern Shore was unable to overcome the deficit and fell, 179-223, to Arkansas State in the first game.
Maryland-Eastern Shore’s come back was quick in the second game as they out shot the Indians, 200-181. The Hawks recorded seven spares and three strikes, while Arkansas State held two open frames to begin the game. The teams were tied at 1-1 heading into the third game.
Despite two open frames to start game three, Arkansas State’s anchor Marissa Martinek helped the Indians to victory with back-to-back strikes in the tenth frame. Arkansas State defeated Maryland-Eastern Shore, 182-180.
Maryland-Eastern Shore answered back with a 217-164 win over Arkansas State in the fourth game. UMES was on fire with six strikes and five spares in the game, which brought them to a 2-2 draw with Arkansas State.
The Hawks kept rolling to a 3-2 lead over Arkansas State in the fifth game. Two strikes in both the eighth and ninth frames gave the Hawks a strong 175-152 win over the Indians.
With momentum on its side, Maryland-Eastern Shore capped the night with a 174-170 victory over Arkansas State to capture the 2008 Women’s Bowling Championship title.
Following the awards ceremony, five championship bowlers were recognized with all-tournament team honors. Brittany Garcia (Vanderbilt), Vicki Spratford (New Jersey City), Maggie Adams (Arkansas State), Jessica Worsley (Maryland-Eastern Shore) and Maria Rodriguez (Maryland-Eastern Shore) were each recognized, while Worlsey claimed the Most Valuable Bowler.
A tape-delay of the championship game will be broadcast on ESPN 2 at 6 p.m. Central on Monday, April 14.

University of Maryland Eastern Shore Jazz Ensemble, "God Bless the Child"
OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) thought they would have the advantage today. After all, they are a fresh oil team. When they faced Vanderbilt yesterday to start they day they topped them 4-0. Suddenly the tables were turned and the hot team was Vanderbilt who went up 3-0. Don't call it a comeback, call it fate, UMES rebounded to pick up four straight games, riding the back of anchor Jessica Worsley and advance to the National Championship to face Arkansas State.
UMES faces the team they defeated yesterday in eight games, ASU in the national championship match.
GRAMBLING. LA — Holding a three-game divisional lead means little when the two-time defending league champions are in the other dugout. That’s been second-year Grambling baseball coach Barret Rey’s pulpit-pounding sermon all week.
“The confidence is coming,” Rey said, “but I don’t want them to get overconfident. We haven’t accomplished anything yet.” That may be overstating things a bit.
Darren Coates was a bolt of lightning last season, becoming an All-Southwestern Athletic Conference second-teamer and the best pass-catching running back of the Pete Richardson era in his one season as Southern’s feature back. Now that Coates is gone, Southern is deep into the business of replacing him as spring practice continues. Brian Threat, who will be a sophomore, and Kendrick Smith, who will be a senior, are the veterans.
Behind them are two freshmen who redshirted last season — Micah Smith and Amonte Harper — and ex-Nicholls State player Joe Robbins, who has one season of eligibility remaining and is learning the entire playbook this season. SU, like at times last season, can employ tight end Evan Alexander in the backfield as well.
Southern also signed two prep players in February: Clinton High’s Byron Williams and Ville Platte High’s Jerry Joseph.
While the rest of FAMU’s football players who hold more glamorous positions practice on the main field, kicker Troy Walker and long snapper Kory McCloughen go through their skill drills almost unnoticed. When they get a chance on the field their entry usually serves as notice that practice is about finished — not so much that they’re participating in a special teams workout.
Neither Walker nor McCloughen mind, though. They know they are the heart and soul of special teams. So they toil in obscurity under the watch of special teams coach Justin Gibboney, attempting to improve their kickoffs, punts, field goals and extra points.

(BOWIE, MD) Bowie State University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Doug Robertson has resigned his position to accept the head coaching post at South Carolina State University. South Carolina State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), finished the 2007-2008 season in 7th place with a record of 9-7 (13-17 overall)
“Coach Robertson did an outstanding job advancing our women’s program," said Athletic Director Derek Carter. “We wish him much success as he embarks on this newest phase of his coaching career.”
During his three years with the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs program, Robertson compiled a record of 53-33 (61.6%), led BSU to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Eastern Division title and was named the 2007-2008 CIAA Coach of the Year.
Prior to his stint at Bowie State, Robertson served as the number one assistant for the Delaware State University Lady Hornets (2000-2005) and helped guide them to an 82-64 overall record and three MEAC Championships game appearances in five years.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas has added a game to its 2008 baseball schedule and will host Alcorn State University Braves at Baum Stadium on Wednesday, April 16, at 6:35 p.m.
Alcorn State is 19-6 on the year which included a 14-game winning streak in March. Since that time, the Braves have lost five of their last eight games including two of three from Jackson State two weeks ago.
The Razorbacks added games to the 2008 schedule after missing three dates due to inclement weather. Arkansas’ first weather outage came on Feb. 26 against Southeast Missouri State followed by rainouts on March 28 against Vanderbilt and April 2 against Mississippi Valley State. Unused tickets to any 2008 regular season game will be honored for admission to the April 16 contest. Tickets may also be purchased on game day at Baum Stadium.

Former Division I head coach and UMBC assistant Frankie Allen today was named the head men's basketball coach at University of Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Allen, who spent the past two seasons at UMBC under head coach Randy Monroe, helped lead the Retrievers to their first NCAA tournament bid last season. He previously coached Virginia Tech, Tennessee State and Howard University. UMBC won the America East title last season but fell to second-seeded Georgetown, 66-47, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Allen has 18 seasons of head coaching experience in Division I.
UMES finished last season 15-16 overall and 9-7 in the MEAC.

DSU posts eight runs in final frame to top in-state rival for Blandin's 200th coaching victory
NEWARK -- A Delaware State-Delaware baseball game that was drifting toward a typical conclusion instead made a sudden about-face late Tuesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium. That was bad for the Blue Hens and great for the Hornets, who found themselves in possession of a satisfying and impromptu victory over their state rivals.
Designated hitter Ryne Mailen's bases-loaded triple concluded an eight-run, ninth-inning rally that gave Delaware State a 10-6 nonconference win, its first at UD since 2002 and just DSU's seventh in 35 all-time games against the Blue Hens. Such an outcome didn't appear likely when Delaware (10-19) cruised into the ninth on top 6-2.
Even at a little under 6 feet, Alabama State senior linebacker John Hogan is hard to overlook. He's one of those guys you just don't miss. Whether it be on the playing field with 80 other guys dressed exactly the same or strolling around campus with hundreds of other students, when Hogan is around, people know it -- for a variety of reasons.
First of all, his voice is unmistakable. It's loud, it's attention-getting and it's constant. Then, there's his hair, which is often flying in a dozen different directions. There's also the friendly smile that's always in place and the confident demeanor that tends to draw people to him. Add it all up and John Hogan might just be the hardest guy to overlook on the ASU campus.
Southern’s baseball team is on a roll, but limping badly as the Jaguars head into a midweek road game at Nicholls State. SU and the Colonels take the diamond at Ray Didier Field in Thibodaux at 6:30 p.m. today.
“We’re limping pretty darn bad right now,” Jaguars coach Roger Cador said. “But we’ve played relatively well despite our physical condition.” That condition hit the SU pitching corps hard over the weekend when starters Chase Richard and Jarrett Maloy went down with injuries. Richard suffered an arm injury that a team doctor said could cause him to miss a couple of weeks.
Blacks sold like cattle to white schools looking for brawn, not brains
The situation of black male athletes in America is an interesting one. In one sense, they are heroes - to their communities and the nation - but in another sense, they are comparable to slaves. No, I did not just call black male athletes, slaves. I said the situation is comparable.
Imagine it this way: The predominantly white institution is the plantation, the white head coach is the slave master and the black athlete is the slave. The crops being reaped: Money, prestige and reputation.
It is generally known that there are more black athletes competing on national collegiate and professional teams than there are owners and coaches of these teams.

Reggie Barlow studied the forecast almost as closely as he did his playbook late Friday night. The ASU head football coach knew that Saturday morning's scheduled scrimmage -- the last before the Black & Gold game -- was vital to his team staying on track in preparing for the fall.
After considering pushing back the time, or canceling it altogether, Barlow and the Hornets boarded the buses and made the quick trek to Cramton Bowl for a spirited scrimmage that featured big plays from and unlikely source.
