Quanneisha Perry scored a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Hampton University to a 57-46 win over South Carolina State.
Hampton wasn't going to be denied this time. The Pirates, who lost last season's women's MEAC championship game to N.C. A&T, rolled to the title yesterday behind forward Melanie Warner, beating upstart S.C. State 57-46 at Joel Coliseum. As for interim Coach David Six, the director of intramurals at Hampton this time last year, it's probably time to lift the interim tag. "I've never said to the players anything about the interim label, I was just their coach," said Six, who before going to Hampton was a successful high-school coach.
"Things will work themselves out. … This is a dream come true and I'm living the dream. It wasn't that long ago I was a high-school coach, and Hampton gave me an opportunity and I had a ball with it." The Pirates (17-13) won their first title since 2004 and their fourth in school history. Warner led the way with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Quanneisha Perry had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and Bernadette Fortune scored 12 points. "It's great that we are going to the NCAA Tournament, and I don't think that's hit us yet," Warner said of securing the conference's automatic bid.

FAMU volleyball's 98-game MEAC winning streak ends
FAMU Coach Tony Trifonov provides instructions to Maria Gomez, as the Lady Rattlers historic 98 game MEAC winning streak is ended by the Lady Bulldogs.
ORANGEBURG, S.C — The South Carolina State volleyball team did what no other team in the conference could do in 98 regular season matches over a 10-year period: they defeated the seven-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M, 3-1, (25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19), and thus ended what has been a dominant streak.
This was FAMU's first conference loss in seven seasons. The Lady Bulldogs (9-18, 2-2 MEAC) controlled the match from the first point and with each point thereafter, S.C. State's confidence increased. Despite dropping the third set, the Lady Bulldogs remained poised to close out FAMU (6-10, 3-1 MEAC). The Lady Bulldogs won in a team effort led by freshman middle blocker Shabree Roberson had a big game as she put down 14 kills with nine assists.

New SCSU women’s basketball coach keeping busy, staying quiet
Since accepting the head women’s basketball job at South Carolina State in April, Doug Robertson has seemingly kept a low profile. The relative silence from his office should not be construed as inactivity, however. Over the past 2½ months, Robertson has worked feverishly to put the Lady Bulldogs’ program back on the winning track.
Step one was the formation of a coaching staff who could best maximize the talents of the current players while demonstrating an ability to recruit new talent from throughout the country. To that end, Robertson has hired Marcell Harrison and La’Nette Dillard, while retaining the services of Antonio Davis.

(BOWIE, MD) Bowie State University Head Women’s Basketball Coach Doug Robertson has resigned his position to accept the head coaching post at South Carolina State University. After a month-long search, it appears South Carolina State is close to naming a new women's basketball coach. S.C. State sports information director Bill Hamilton said Thursday an announcement could come "any day now" in regards to the hiring of a replacement for Tonya Mackey, who went 43-72 in four seasons before resigning.
While Hamilton could not divulge details on the search, the T&D has learned S.C. State has apparently targeted Bowie State women's basketball coach Doug Robertson. Bowie State sports information director George Goings confirmed Thursday S.C. State had contacted his school's athletics director Derek Carter seeking permission to interview Robertson. However, he had not heard whether or not Robertson had spoken with the school since he was in San Antonio, Texas for the Final Four.

Reid Leads S.C. State To Win Over Bethune-Cookman
Marie Reid scored 13 of her game-high 25 points in the second half and the defense held Bethune-Cookman scoreless for almost 10 minutes of the second half as South Carolina State rolled to a 66-45 win over the Lady Wildcats in the first round of the MEAC women’s game at the RBC Center. The Lady Bulldogs (13-16), Number 7 seed, advance to the Wednesday’s quarterfinal round where they will take on the Number 2 seed, Coppin State at 12:30 pm.
A 6-4 sophomore transfer from Memphis, Reid connected on 6 of her nine shots in the second half, many coming low post moves on the block, to help SC State, extend its four-point halftime lead to 53-35 at the 9:30 mark.
Bethune-Cookman (6-24) suddenly went cold during a stretch of 9:42, missing several shots. The Lady Wildcats missed 27 of their 32 attempts after intermission, including 0 for 11 from three-point land.
Reid got plenty of support from junior forward Janell Moore, who recorded a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds as SC State dominated their shorter opponents, 53-36 on the glass.

Reid isn't good enough to be named to the ALL-MEAC women's team, but she just goes out and score 25 points and pull down 11 boards to demolish BCU and FAMU. And this Lady Bulldog is not a starter, but the sixth woman. Wow! She's All MEAC in our book.

NCA&T Lady Aggies win No. 1 Seed in MEAC Tournament
Photo: Brittanie Taylor-James, 6-0 junior forward, added 17 points and seven rebounds.
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team grabbed a share of the MEAC regular-season crown on Monday night with an 86-67 win over S.C. State at S-H-M Memorial Center. But head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs is not in a sharing mood.
“I told the ladies we don’t want share anything,’’ said Bibbs. “We’ve come this far, we might as well take the whole thing. We’ve got to keep our focus and keep striving until all our goals are met fully.”
Coppin State beat Howard to prevent the Aggies from clinching the title outright. An Aggies win at Howard on Saturday will make the Aggies the outright MEAC regular-season champions. The Aggies did clinch the No. 1 overall seed for the MEAC Tournament to be held in Raleigh March 10-15 behind 23 points and eight steals from Amber Bland. Brittanie Taylor-James added 17 points and seven rebounds, and Ta’Wuana Cook scored 19 points and had four assists.
