Winning the CIAA women’s basketball championship is old hat for Shaw’s Bears.
Winning the national title, now that’s a prize that’s worth chasing.
“Shaw’s won the CIAA championship,” said Bears coach Jacques Curtis, who has earned six since 2003. “What we’re trying to do is a little bit different.”
Shaw (21-11) and fellow CIAA member Johnson C. Smith (24-4) are in the Division II tournament, which starts March 11 with the Atlantic Regional in Edinboro, Pa. Shaw will face top-seeded and region host Edinboro (26-3) while the No. 2 Golden Bulls Bulls will play No. 7 Glenville State (23-8).

Shaw Bears turns back WSSU Rams
RALEIGH -- The race for the CIAA's Southern Division title just got a little more interesting. Shaw made all the right moves on Saturday night to come away with a 77-64 victory against Winston-Salem State at sold-out Spaulding Gym. One Shaw official was asked how many Spaulding actually seats. His reply: "It seats 1,000. … Well, it seats 1,000 skinny people."
The Rams were a little shell-shocked out of the gate playing in such a small gym and fell behind by 17, thanks to the Bears (15-7, 4-2 Southern Division) scoring on 10 of their first 13 possessions. The Rams (16-5, 4-2) finally did get it together late in the first half.
"This was the smallest, hottest gym I've ever been in," said forward McIntoche Alcius of the Rams. "And it was a tough crowd out there."
Strong Performances Lead Shaw Past Winston-Salem State
(Raleigh, NC) - Shaw got zero points from its bench Saturday night, but four of the five starters scored 17 points or more to lead the Bears past Winston-Salem State 77-64 in a CIAA divisional game played at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (15-7, 8-5 CIAA) built a big lead early, and while Winston-Salem State (16-5, 9-4 CIAA) tied the game with their first bucket in the second half, they did not hold a lead at any time in the game.
The Bears seemed equally comfortable from the arc and the paint, hitting nine of 23 three-point attempts and garnering 32 points in the paint (versus 22 for the Rams).
Coming off a career-high 27-point performance against Livingstone Monday night, Dwight Bell started the game hot – scoring Shaw's first eight points, on the way to what would become a 16-2 lead with 14:40 remaining in the first.
Second Half Scoring Surge Powers Shaw Lady Bears Past WSSU 73-53
(Raleigh, NC) - The Shaw women's basketball team used a 34-9 scoring run at the start of the second half to power past Winston-Salem State 73-53 in a CIAA divisional contest played at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (14-10, 7-6 CIAA) and Winston-Salem State (14-8, 9-4 CIAA) played a see-saw first half, but the Lady Bears stormed through the opening ten minutes of the second half to build a lead that never fell below 20 in the last eight minutes of the game.
The Lady Rams opened the game with a hot shooting hand from the three-point line, with Jasmine Newkirk hitting three three-pointers to build an 11-2 lead with 15:33 left in the half.
Demaria Liles, in her first game for the Lady Bears, hit two unanswered buckets, then Kyria Buford added two more – one a three pointer – to tie the game at 11. Aslea Williams would then add four unanswered points of her own, allowing Shaw to take a 15-11 lead with 9:05 left in the first.

Shaw Edges Virginia State 14-7 to Claim CIAA Championship
The Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) football championship game was a tale of two stories Saturday, Nov. 14 at Durham County Stadium.
You would think the Shaw University Bears completely toppled the Virginia State University Trojans (VSU) by looking at the box score. Shaw out gained VSU with 412 total yards compared to the Trojans’ 136. Yet Shaw only barely edged the Trojans, 14-7, to claim the CIAA crown.
VSU was able to keep the score tight despite being blasted by Shaw’s potent running game. Bears’ star tailback Raymond Williams was named Shaw's Most Valuable Player after rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries.

Trojans fall to the Bears
DURHAM, N.C. - Brian Berry had a step on his defender, it seemed, but the ball sailed just beyond his outstretched arms, thus ending the Virginia State University football team's storybook season. The CIAA Northern Division champions lost to Shaw 14-7, winners of the Southern Division, in the conference championship game at Durham County Stadium on Saturday.
The Bears dominated at times, posting a 412-136 advantage in offensive yards, but the Trojans lingered thanks to an ability to play timely defense and propensity to make big plays when they needed them most. In the end, however, Shaw's senior duo of running back Raymond Williams and quarterback Kevin Atkins did enough to secure the Bears' third conference title in four years.
VSU comes up short in title game
DURHAM, N.C. -- The Virginia State Trojans tried to make the most out of the least yesterday in the CIAA football championship game. And it almost worked. But the Trojans were unable to score when they needed a touchdown most and lost to Shaw University 14-7 in Durham County Stadium.
Shaw will find out today if it advances to the Division II playoffs. The Trojans' postseason hopes rest with the chance of an invitation to the Pioneer Bowl in Columbus, Ga.

Shaw will count on its backcourt
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaw coach Cleo Hill Jr. evaluated the men's basketball team after last season and concluded the Bears needed to shoot better and have better athletes. When the third-year coach looks down his roster, he sees a guard-heavy rotation that specifically addresses his concerns.
The Bears host Mars Hill on Friday in their season-opener and will have their first chance to check for the speed, intellect and dynamism Hill felt they needed to succeed.
Senior guard Raheem Smith, the team's leading scorer last season at 14.6 points per game, will anchor the backcourt with newcomer Tony Smith, a 6-foot-5 transfer point guard from Seward (Mo.) Community College.

Saint Augustine's Falcons vs. Shaw Bears for CIAA Championship Berth
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaw football coach Darrell Asberry enjoys conversations about championship trophies. His Bears claimed Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in 2007 and 2008. He wants another. "They make my office look good," Asberry said.
To earn the opportunity to play for a third championship in four seasons, the Bears (7-2, 6-0 CIAA) must defeat St. Augustine's (8-1, 6-0) on Saturday at Broughton High School in what is the final regular-season game for both teams.

JCSU Golden Bulls beaten on both sides of ball
Shaw is hitting its stride at the right time. The Bears remained unbeaten in the CIAA with a 45-13 South Division win against J.C. Smith Saturday at McGirt Field, for Shaw's sixth straight in the series and third in as many league games. Shaw (4-2, 3-0 CIAA) remains tied for first in the division with crosstown Raleigh rival St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State.
"Personally, I love being under the radar," said Shaw defensive tackle Michael Carter, a Wake Forest transfer who led the Bears with eight tackles and a sack. "That way, you can come up and surprise people and show them where they should be but they're not."
Shaw Finds Its Rhythm; Downs JCSU 45-13
Charlotte, NC – Shaw found its rhythm in all three aspects of the game and handily defeated Johnson C. Smith 45-13. The Bears gave up only one offensive touchdown, while generating nearly 500 yards of offense.
“The defense and special teams had been playing well all season,” said Shaw Head Coach Darrell Asberry. “This week the offense finally found its rhythm. (Quarterback) Kevin Atkins needed a breakout game, and I think this was finally it.”

Texas Southern tops Shaw at Capital City
Statistics
The Capital City Football Classic was billed as "more than a game," and for the Texas Southern University Tigers, it was a cleansing. The Tigers shook off a losing streak of 13 games with a stout mind-set and more determined defense and a 23-point third quarter on the way to a 40-29 victory over the Shaw University Bears at Hughes Stadium on Saturday evening.
TSU quarterback Bobby Reid adhered to the pleas of first-year coach Johnnie Cole and was an all-around force by running for two touchdowns and throwing for one. "We've been trying to tell Bobby that we wanted that from him," said Cole, who clutched the game ball as he spoke to reporters. "There would be times when he would have to put the team on his back. "He's a big-time player and makes plays in big games." This qualified as a big game coming off Arkansas State's 83-10 demolition of Texas Southern on Sept. 6.
