CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Sharay Dubose scored 27 points -- her second highest total of the year — but it wasn't enough as Shaw spoiled Lincolns' debut in the CIAA conference tourney, turning back the Lady Lions by a score of 95-63.
The Bears (18-11) came into the tourney as the number two seed in the South Division, while the Lions (3-24) were the seventh seed.
Lincoln came out of the gate strong, paced by the hot hand of DeJuana Mosley, who scored eight of Lincoln's first 13 points, and the Lady Lions either led or were tied for the lead for the first ten minutes of the game.
Shaw Offensive Firepower Rolls Over Lincoln 95-63 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The inside trio of Demaria Liles, Kyra Buford and Aslea Williams combined to score over half of Shaw's points in a 95-63 first-round women's basketball win over Lincoln (Pa.) Monday in the first day of the CIAA Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena.
"It felt good to get our feet wet and get that first win," Shaw Head Coach Jacques Curtis said.
Liles, a 6-1 senior forward, led the Lady Bears (18-11 overall) with 21 points on 9 of 11 shooting and snatched 12 rebounds for her fifth straight double-double for the Lady Bears. Buford, a 6-1 senior forward, added 20 points and Williams, a 6-1 junior center, added 15 points for the Lady Bears, the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division. The Lady Bears square off against No. 3 Northern Division seed Virginia State Tuesday in a CIAA quarterfinal game at 3 p.m.
RALEIGH -- The race for the CIAA's Southern Division title just got a little more interesting. Shaw made all the right moves on Saturday night to come away with a 77-64 victory against Winston-Salem State at sold-out Spaulding Gym. One Shaw official was asked how many Spaulding actually seats. His reply: "It seats 1,000. … Well, it seats 1,000 skinny people."
The Rams were a little shell-shocked out of the gate playing in such a small gym and fell behind by 17, thanks to the Bears (15-7, 4-2 Southern Division) scoring on 10 of their first 13 possessions. The Rams (16-5, 4-2) finally did get it together late in the first half.
"This was the smallest, hottest gym I've ever been in," said forward McIntoche Alcius of the Rams. "And it was a tough crowd out there."
(Raleigh, NC) - Shaw got zero points from its bench Saturday night, but four of the five starters scored 17 points or more to lead the Bears past Winston-Salem State 77-64 in a CIAA divisional game played at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (15-7, 8-5 CIAA) built a big lead early, and while Winston-Salem State (16-5, 9-4 CIAA) tied the game with their first bucket in the second half, they did not hold a lead at any time in the game.
The Bears seemed equally comfortable from the arc and the paint, hitting nine of 23 three-point attempts and garnering 32 points in the paint (versus 22 for the Rams).
Coming off a career-high 27-point performance against Livingstone Monday night, Dwight Bell started the game hot – scoring Shaw's first eight points, on the way to what would become a 16-2 lead with 14:40 remaining in the first.
(Raleigh, NC) - The Shaw women's basketball team used a 34-9 scoring run at the start of the second half to power past Winston-Salem State 73-53 in a CIAA divisional contest played at C. C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw (14-10, 7-6 CIAA) and Winston-Salem State (14-8, 9-4 CIAA) played a see-saw first half, but the Lady Bears stormed through the opening ten minutes of the second half to build a lead that never fell below 20 in the last eight minutes of the game.
The Lady Rams opened the game with a hot shooting hand from the three-point line, with Jasmine Newkirk hitting three three-pointers to build an 11-2 lead with 15:33 left in the half.
Demaria Liles, in her first game for the Lady Bears, hit two unanswered buckets, then Kyria Buford added two more – one a three pointer – to tie the game at 11. Aslea Williams would then add four unanswered points of her own, allowing Shaw to take a 15-11 lead with 9:05 left in the first.
Today and the rest of the week, most students, staff and faculty will be joining family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a special time of the year that we join our families and friends in counting our blessings. Of course, Shaw University family is especially excited by victory that our football team delivered being the new CIAA Champions!
We are grateful that the Bears' flag flies high and we are also thankful that we can count many other blessings just by being students at this time. Here are five reasons why college students should be thankful on Thanksgiving:
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Tommy Addison ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Nate Hoyte added 106 yards and a score to lead Shepherd University to a 40-6 win over Shaw University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional 1 at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Kevin Clancy threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dominique Jones for the Rams (10-1), who will travel to top seed Kutztown next weekend.
Shepherd took a 3-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Eric Dobratz. Clancy connected with Jones on a 7-yard touchdown strike with 5:23 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 10-0 lead at halftime.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Consider it a lesson learned for Shepherd.
Although the Rams went into Saturday's NCAA Division II playoff game against visiting and streaking Shaw in a less-than-ideal situation coming off their only loss of the season, Shepherd found its focus again Saturday at Ram Stadium.
The 18th-ranked Rams delivered a balanced attack offensively, pressured Shaw on defense and overcame injuries to key special teams performers to run away from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Bears in a 40-6 win in front of partisan crowd of 4,212.
The West Virginia Conference champion Rams, Super Region 1's fourth seed, advances to the second round of the playoffs next Saturday at top-seeded Kutztown. "The game against Glenville ... we were waiting on the playoffs, rather than coming out intense," said Shepherd tight end Dominique Jones, who caught two touchdown passes against Shaw.
It's looks as if it Kutztown will be involved in a high-scoring affair next Saturday at noon at University Field. The Golden Bears (10-1), who received a first-round bye as the top seed in Super Region One of the NCAA Division II playoffs, will take on fourth-seeded Shepherd in the second round. The Rams defeated fifth-seeded Shaw 40-6 Saturday.
The Rams (10-1) went into that game fifth in Division II in scoring at 40.2 points per game. The Golden Bears are averaging 39.3 points per game. The Rams outgained Shaw (9-3) 447-233.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVa. -- The Shaw Bears eight game winning streak ended with a 40-6 loss to the Shepherd Rams in the opening round of the Division II playoffs. The Shaw offense was bottled up all afternoon by the Rams, limiting senior running back Raymond Williams to 78 yards on the ground, while the Bears managed only 233 yards of total offense.
“Sometimes its just your day, and today wasn’t our day,” Shaw coach Darrell Asberry said. Shaw's only points on the game came in the fourth quarter when Odom found senior wide receiver Gregory Julius in the endzone on a 23 yard scoring strike.
The rules for NCAA Division II football competition allow teams to have 36 full scholarships. Shaw coach Darrell Asberry is getting by with 26. The Bears don't have a home stadium, and their new practice field is roughly 50 yards long. Without access to an indoor facility, Tuesday's rains forced the staff to cancel practice.
And yet, Asberry is one happy coach these days.
With a 14-7 win over Virginia State last Saturday in the CIAA title game at Durham, the 9-2 Bears are off to the Division II championship playoffs for the third time in four seasons. "It says a lot about these guys, and the assistant coaches we have been able to get here, it really does," Asberry said.

In a game that didn't live up to its billing until the fourth quarter, Shaw defeated neighboring rival St. Augustine's 10-6 on Saturday at Broughton High School. The win gives the Bears (8-2, 7-0 CIAA) the CIAA Southern Division title and a chance to meet Virginia State, winner of the Northern Division, at 1 p.m. next Saturday at Durham County Stadium. Rico Brown recovered a fumble and Raymond Williams took advantage with a 35-yard touchdown run as Shaw upset nationally-ranked St. Augustine's, 10-6, at Broughton High School in Raleigh Saturday. The victory gave the Bears (8-2, 7-0) the CIAA southern division title and, more importantly, a berth in the CIAA championship next Saturday in Durham against Virginia State. Shaw will make its third appearance in the conference title game in four years.
The no. 19 Falcons (8-2, 6-1), meanwhile, had their seven-game winning streak snapped and will wait to see if they can get an at-large berth in the Division II playoffs.
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaw football coach Darrell Asberry enjoys conversations about championship trophies. His Bears claimed Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships in 2007 and 2008. He wants another. "They make my office look good," Asberry said.
To earn the opportunity to play for a third championship in four seasons, the Bears (7-2, 6-0 CIAA) must defeat St. Augustine's (8-1, 6-0) on Saturday at Broughton High School in what is the final regular-season game for both teams.
Durham, N.C. - Winston-Salem State’s dream season ended with a Shaw nightmare.
The Bears rallied in the second half to come away with a 31-27 victory on Saturday afternoon in front of around 7,000 at Durham County Stadium. The win sets up a showdown on Saturday with St. Augustine’s with the winner of that game getting a berth into the CIAA Championship Game.
For the 18th-ranked Rams, their season of such high hopes comes to an end as they finish 8-2 and 5-2 in the CIAA. All season long Coach Connell Maynor of the Rams hasn’t made excuses, and he wasn’t about to start. The Rams led the whole way until a costly interception by Kameron Smith late in the game gave the Bears (7-2, 6-0) the final jolt of momentum they would need.

Kienus Boulware doesn’t get too excited too often. As the coordinator of Winston-Salem State’s defense, he has used his steady hand and quiet nature to help make an already talented unit even better.
On Saturday, Boulware will face his old boss, Coach Darrell Asberry of Shaw. Boulware spent the previous four seasons as Shaw’s defensive coordinator, and his players sense something different this week. “When you are playing a school you used to coach, there’s a different feeling,” defensive lineman Juan Corders of WSSU said. “Of course Coach Boulware wants us to be successful on Saturday.”
Coach Darrell Asberry of Shaw is well aware of what his team will have at stake the next two Saturdays. First, his Bears will take on the 18th-ranked Winston-Salem State Rams at 1 p.m. Saturday at Durham County Stadium. The next weekend, on Nov. 6, they will play No. 23 St. Augustine’s.
“When you get down to this point in the season, they are all big,” said Asberry, who is in his fifth season. With Shaw (6-2, 5-0 CIAA), WSSU (8-1, 5-1) and St. Aug’s (7-1, 5-0) all chasing the CIAA’s Southern Division title, there’s late-season drama, but Asberry said that’s not a bad thing.
Coach Connell Maynor of Winston-Salem State has done a good job keeping his players from worrying about whether one game is more important than another. He doesn’t have that luxury this week. The 18th-ranked Rams (8-1, 5-1 CIAA) will play the Shaw Bears (6-2, 5-0) in their regular-season finale Saturday. For WSSU, it might as well be a championship game.
“It doesn’t get any bigger,” Maynor said. “We have to win it.”
The game will help settle who wins the CIAA’s Southern Division title. A loss most likely would end the season for the Rams, eliminating them from the Southern Division race and a shot at the Division II playoffs.
WSSU’s final regular-season game with Shaw on Saturday at 1 p.m. will be played at Durham County Stadium instead of Millbrook High School in Raleigh. The game originally was scheduled for Millbrook, where Shaw plays most of its home games because it does not have a stadium on campus. Durham County Stadium is also where the CIAA Championship Game will be played on Nov. 13. For information on tickets call the WSSU ticket office at 750-3220.

Winston-Salem, N.C.--The 8-1 Winston Salem State head into Saturday's showdown with CIAA Rival Shaw needing a win and a little help the following week to earn a spot in the Conference Championship game.
Shaw and Saint Augustine's sit atop the CIAA Southern Division Standings with 5-0 records with the Rams just behind at 5-1. Winston-Salem State needs to knock off Shaw, and have Shaw beat Saint Augustine's the following week to create a 3 way tie atop the Division.

RALEIGH - Fayetteville State coach Kenny Phillips leaned against a wall outside his team's locker room late Saturday and broke into a chuckle. He didn't know what else to do. The explanation behind the Broncos' 34-27 road loss to Shaw was far too simple.
"Oh, what a feeling," Phillips said. "You've got to make plays. We talk about it all the time. When opportunities are there for you to make a big play, you have to make that play." Shaw won Saturday's CIAA tussle because its top wide receiver, Julius Gregory, made two highlight reel touchdown catches in the second half.
Raleigh, NC – Shaw built a lead in the first quarter, but could never distance itself from a determined Fayetteville State squad as they held on for a 34-27 win. The win moves Shaw to 5-2 on the season, 4-0 in the CIAA. Fayetteville State drops to 2-5, 1-3 in the CIAA.
“Any time these two teams play, you know it’s going to be a high tempo game,” said Shaw Head Coach Darrell Asberry. “Our team is playing good football, and while it took our offense a little time to click, we stuck to the game plan and it came out in our favor.”
Shaw’s Kevin Atkins threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and Raymond Williams rushed for two touchdowns, but it was Julius Gregory (right) who proved to be the offensive star for the Bears. Gregory caught both of Atkins’ TD tosses, giving him seven on the season, and 18 in his Shaw career, new Shaw records in each instance.
