Shepherd Rams rout Shaw in playoff opener

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Tommy Addison ran for 145 yards and a touchdown and Nate Hoyte added 106 yards and a score to lead Shepherd University to a 40-6 win over Shaw University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Super Regional 1 at Ram Stadium on Saturday.

Kevin Clancy threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dominique Jones for the Rams (10-1), who will travel to top seed Kutztown next weekend.

Shepherd took a 3-0 lead two minutes into the second quarter on a 29-yard field goal by Eric Dobratz. Clancy connected with Jones on a 7-yard touchdown strike with 5:23 left in the second quarter to give the Rams a 10-0 lead at halftime.

Rams pummel Bears

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - Consider it a lesson learned for Shepherd.

Although the Rams went into Saturday's NCAA Division II playoff game against visiting and streaking Shaw in a less-than-ideal situation coming off their only loss of the season, Shepherd found its focus again Saturday at Ram Stadium.

The 18th-ranked Rams delivered a balanced attack offensively, pressured Shaw on defense and overcame injuries to key special teams performers to run away from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Bears in a 40-6 win in front of partisan crowd of 4,212.

The West Virginia Conference champion Rams, Super Region 1's fourth seed, advances to the second round of the playoffs next Saturday at top-seeded Kutztown. "The game against Glenville ... we were waiting on the playoffs, rather than coming out intense," said Shepherd tight end Dominique Jones, who caught two touchdown passes against Shaw.

KU to face Shepherd

It's looks as if it Kutztown will be involved in a high-scoring affair next Saturday at noon at University Field. The Golden Bears (10-1), who received a first-round bye as the top seed in Super Region One of the NCAA Division II playoffs, will take on fourth-seeded Shepherd in the second round. The Rams defeated fifth-seeded Shaw 40-6 Saturday.

The Rams (10-1) went into that game fifth in Division II in scoring at 40.2 points per game. The Golden Bears are averaging 39.3 points per game. The Rams outgained Shaw (9-3) 447-233.

Shaw overwhelmed by Shepherd in Div. II playoffs

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVa. -- The Shaw Bears eight game winning streak ended with a 40-6 loss to the Shepherd Rams in the opening round of the Division II playoffs. The Shaw offense was bottled up all afternoon by the Rams, limiting senior running back Raymond Williams to 78 yards on the ground, while the Bears managed only 233 yards of total offense.

“Sometimes its just your day, and today wasn’t our day,” Shaw coach Darrell Asberry said. Shaw's only points on the game came in the fourth quarter when Odom found senior wide receiver Gregory Julius in the endzone on a 23 yard scoring strike.

Albany State, Morehouse, Shaw Enter D-II Playoff Picture

For the first time in SIAC history, two schools will play in the NCAA Division II playoffs in the same year. Albany State and Morehouse were selected to Region II for the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Shaw, which defeated Virginia State Saturday for its third CIAA championship in four years, is the lone conference representative. Both St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State, which had hoped for at-large bids, were left out.

D-II PLAYOFFS: ASU retains No. 1 seed, will face Morehouse-Wingate winner Nov. 27 in Albany

ATLANTA — The NCAA Division II football playoff pairings were announced Sunday and two SIAC teams, Albany State and Morehouse — for the first time in conference history — both earned berths to the postseason.

For the first time since 2004, Albany State finished a perfect 10-0 in the regular season and No. 1 in the region. The Rams, who won their first SIAC title since 2006, will have a bye in the first-round of the playoffs and host the winner of Wingate/Morehouse on Nov. 27 at noon.

Morehouse, which finished 8-2 in the regular season...

Fort Valley State Wildcats left out of playoffs

Donald Pittman wanted two things the past few days. He got one of them. Two teams ahead of Pittman and Fort Valley State in the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 lost in their regular-season finales.

Region No. 2 Valdosta State lost 24-21 on Thursday to West Alabama, but the Blazers were highly unlikely to drop out of the top six in the region. Then on Saturday, region No. 4 North Alabama fell 29-28 to Harding in Gulf South Conference play. "They lost, and we said, ‘We have a chance,’ ” Pittman said. “But it didn’t happen.”

Upon further review, Morehouse in playoffs for first time

The Morehouse football team showed some brashness in holding another party on a playoff selection Sunday after last year’s collective kick in the groin. However, this year's festive gathering didn’t end with a thud when the last playoff team was picked: Morehouse (8-2) will play at Wingate (8-2) on Saturday. Albany State, No. 1 seed in Super Region 2, awaits the winner.

The Maroon Tigers, left out of the postseason last year, had to wait until mid-afternoon to find out if this season would continue.

Shaw Edges Virginia State 14-7 to Claim CIAA Championship

The Central Interscholastic Athletic Association (CIAA) football championship game was a tale of two stories Saturday, Nov. 14 at Durham County Stadium.

You would think the Shaw University Bears completely toppled the Virginia State University Trojans (VSU) by looking at the box score. Shaw out gained VSU with 412 total yards compared to the Trojans’ 136. Yet Shaw only barely edged the Trojans, 14-7, to claim the CIAA crown.

VSU was able to keep the score tight despite being blasted by Shaw’s potent running game. Bears’ star tailback Raymond Williams was named Shaw's Most Valuable Player after rushing for 117 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries.

Trojans fall to the Bears

DURHAM, N.C. - Brian Berry had a step on his defender, it seemed, but the ball sailed just beyond his outstretched arms, thus ending the Virginia State University football team's storybook season. The CIAA Northern Division champions lost to Shaw 14-7, winners of the Southern Division, in the conference championship game at Durham County Stadium on Saturday.

The Bears dominated at times, posting a 412-136 advantage in offensive yards, but the Trojans lingered thanks to an ability to play timely defense and propensity to make big plays when they needed them most. In the end, however, Shaw's senior duo of running back Raymond Williams and quarterback Kevin Atkins did enough to secure the Bears' third conference title in four years.

VSU comes up short in title game

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Virginia State Trojans tried to make the most out of the least yesterday in the CIAA football championship game. And it almost worked. But the Trojans were unable to score when they needed a touchdown most and lost to Shaw University 14-7 in Durham County Stadium.

Shaw will find out today if it advances to the Division II playoffs. The Trojans' postseason hopes rest with the chance of an invitation to the Pioneer Bowl in Columbus, Ga.

Shaw will count on its backcourt

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Shaw coach Cleo Hill Jr. evaluated the men's basketball team after last season and concluded the Bears needed to shoot better and have better athletes. When the third-year coach looks down his roster, he sees a guard-heavy rotation that specifically addresses his concerns.

The Bears host Mars Hill on Friday in their season-opener and will have their first chance to check for the speed, intellect and dynamism Hill felt they needed to succeed.

Senior guard Raheem Smith, the team's leading scorer last season at 14.6 points per game, will anchor the backcourt with newcomer Tony Smith, a 6-foot-5 transfer point guard from Seward (Mo.) Community College.

JCSU Golden Bulls beaten on both sides of ball

Shaw is hitting its stride at the right time. The Bears remained unbeaten in the CIAA with a 45-13 South Division win against J.C. Smith Saturday at McGirt Field, for Shaw's sixth straight in the series and third in as many league games. Shaw (4-2, 3-0 CIAA) remains tied for first in the division with crosstown Raleigh rival St. Augustine's and Winston-Salem State.

"Personally, I love being under the radar," said Shaw defensive tackle Michael Carter, a Wake Forest transfer who led the Bears with eight tackles and a sack. "That way, you can come up and surprise people and show them where they should be but they're not."

Shaw Finds Its Rhythm; Downs JCSU 45-13

Charlotte, NC – Shaw found its rhythm in all three aspects of the game and handily defeated Johnson C. Smith 45-13. The Bears gave up only one offensive touchdown, while generating nearly 500 yards of offense.

“The defense and special teams had been playing well all season,” said Shaw Head Coach Darrell Asberry. “This week the offense finally found its rhythm. (Quarterback) Kevin Atkins needed a breakout game, and I think this was finally it.”

Shaw Overpowers Virginia Union 57-27

Raleigh, NC - Shaw quarterbacks combined for six touchdown passes as Shaw handily defeated visiting Virginia Union 57-27.

Starting quarterback Kevin Atkins (right) threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns on the evening, while Quinshon Odom came in with the second team in the fourth quarter and added 103 yards and two touchdowns of his own – one a 60-yard bomb that was pulled in by Tyrone Craig in the endzone.

While the Shaw defense gave up some big plays at key moments, including a 25-yard touchdown pass from Panther quarterback Aris McGlone-English to Andre Winston as the clock hit zero at the end of the first half, they also managed to hold Virginia Union scoreless in the first and third quarters.

Shaw Bears need a quarterback

RALEIGH, NC -- After losing to Fayetteville State 29-28 in the last minutes of the fourth quarter on Oct. 10 and giving up a chance at the division title, the Shaw football team is looking to make up for the missed opportunity. The team plays its season-opener at home and then goes on the road for five consecutive games. Shaw then comes home for three games before finishing off conference play against St. Augustine's on Nov. 6. Coach Darrell Asberry's team gets another shot at Fayetteville State at home.

The Bears have a veteran offensive line that has back all but three starters from a group that led the CIAA in scoring offense and total offense. But there are questions elsewhere on the team. Shaw hopes to have answers before its opener against Virginia Union on Sept. 4.

1. Who will be the team's new quarterback?

Shaw's Asberry makes his mark‎

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Darrell Asberry can't erase this loss from his mind. The fourth-year Shaw football coach holds on to defeats and uses them as a source of energy. This particular loss, to Elizabeth City State, came during his first season with the Bears, in 2006. And it wasn't so much that his team lost, but that they were crushed 36-0 near the end of an ego-bruising 3-7 campaign. Vikings coach Waverly Tillar called for a two-point conversion after a fourth-quarter touchdown with five minutes to play. The run attempt failed, though it came as a stark reminder of how weak opponents considered the Bears.

"He called time out and went for two," Asberry said last month through coarse laughter. It's only funny now because that was the last game the Bears lost to Elizabeth City State. Two years later, Asberry's team won its second consecutive CIAA championship, defeating the Vikings 36-7 in the title game. Last season, the Bears were a botched snap away from returning to the conference championship game - led by their offensive-minded coach, who despite limited resources has spearheaded a successful program. "He made it known, you got me down now, but I'm not going to stay down," Tillar said.

A former quarterback at Jackson State, Asberry helped head coach Rod Broadway - now at Grambling State - orchestrate two CIAA championships at N.C. Central in 2005 and 2006, serving as an assistant head coach before accepting his first head coaching job at Shaw.

In a short time, Asberry, 38, has won 28 games, captured two conference titles, led the Bears to the NCAA Division II playoffs and distinguished himself as one of the nation's top Division II coaches. "To do what he's done at Shaw definitely puts him in the arena with successful [historically black college and university] coaches in the country," said LeCounte Conaway, an analyst with Heritage Sports Radio Network. "He's winning. ... He's proven that his teams are going to be very competitive, well-prepared and also they're going to have talent."

Shaw University 20, Bethune-Cookman 6

Bethune Cookman Wildcat twins Antonio and Antwane Cox.

B-CU commits 7 turnovers in loss to Shaw

Bethune-Cookman knew it would be playing a formidable foe Saturday. But the Wildcats had no idea they would be playing against two of them -- Division II power Shaw and themselves. The Wildcats turned the ball over seven times, including four inside the Bears 12-yard line, as Shaw upset B-CU 20-6 in the 'Cats' season-opener Saturday at Municipal Stadium. "(Saturday) the people that beat us have Wildcats on their jerseys," said B-CU quarterback Matt Johnson, who provided a spark off the bench with 126 total yards, but, like starter Maurice Francois, had trouble getting his team into the end zone.

The Wildcats fumbled six times, five times inside Shaw territory. Running back Brian Sumlar, who rushed for 67 yards and a 12-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter for the Wildcats' lone score, fumbled at the Bears 10 and 6. Francois fumbled at the 5 in the fourth quarter. And Johnson threw an interception at Shaw's 11 on B-CU's first possession of the second half. "What else can you do? We had opportunities to score touchdowns," B-CU coach Alvin Wyatt said. "Fumbles killed us; they were our worst nightmare."

Big Cash Schools in B-CU's future

Shaw University backup quarterback Brandon Landers strutted off the field Saturday after the Bears upset Bethune-Cookman 20-6 before 4,137 stunned fans at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium. "We don't have to jump around," Landers exclaimed. "We're supposed to win." A few years down the road, it's possible that a similar scene could unfold in a much larger stadium. And the underdog winner could be wearing Bethune-Cookman's Maroon and Gold instead of Shaw's Maroon and White.

While Division II Shaw played a Division I Football Championship Subdivision opponent for the competition, B-CU could follow a growing trend and play at a Bowl Championship Series team mainly for the guaranteed money. "For me," B-CU athletics director Lynn Thompson said, "BCS means Big Cash Schools." The Wildcats always turned away guaranteed games in the past because B-CU coach Alvin Wyatt was afraid his squad would get badly beaten up -- physically and mentally by the bigger and deeper D-I powerhouses. But due to the downward spiraling economy, the 'Cats have been listening to offers in recent years. And what started as a trickle has become a raging river of offers.

Landers completes journey at Grambling, headed to Division II Shaw University program

Fourth-year starter Brandon Landers was declared academically ineligible on the eve of the fall 2008 practices and did not play in the Tigers championship season.

GRAMBLING, LA — Brandon Landers, the playmaking former Carroll High and Grambling quarterback, only gained a few yards on Friday morning. They meant more than any touchdown. Landers walked across the stage at GSU to accept a criminal justice degree, something that once seemed unlikely after the fifth-year senior starter was lost to ineligibility last August. “To come so close and fall so short,” Landers said, “I had to stay positive.”

Landers, who continued his studies while working as an assistant coach last season at Richwood High, will finish his playing days at Shaw University, a North Carolina Division II program. Shaw, which just earned its second consecutive Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship, is led by former Jackson State coach Darrell Asberry. His staff includes ex-GSU running back Vyron Brown, an assistant at Grambling during Landers’ tenure. The Monroe native also sought advice from several members of the current GSU staff who have deep roots in the North Carolina area.

Texas Southern tops Shaw at Capital City

Statistics

The Capital City Football Classic was billed as "more than a game," and for the Texas Southern University Tigers, it was a cleansing. The Tigers shook off a losing streak of 13 games with a stout mind-set and more determined defense and a 23-point third quarter on the way to a 40-29 victory over the Shaw University Bears at Hughes Stadium on Saturday evening.

TSU quarterback Bobby Reid adhered to the pleas of first-year coach Johnnie Cole and was an all-around force by running for two touchdowns and throwing for one. "We've been trying to tell Bobby that we wanted that from him," said Cole, who clutched the game ball as he spoke to reporters. "There would be times when he would have to put the team on his back. "He's a big-time player and makes plays in big games." This qualified as a big game coming off Arkansas State's 83-10 demolition of Texas Southern on Sept. 6.
