Atlanta, GA - The Stillman College football team, under the direction of new head coach Teddy Keaton, has been picked to finish fourth among five teams in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s West Division.
Results of the preseason poll were announced Wednesday during the SIAC Kickoff Luncheon in Atlanta. The conference features two divisions this season, with the East and West winners meeting in a championship game. The title game is scheduled for Nov. 12 in Columbus, Ga., but Keaton said Stillman would not be able to participate if it qualifies because the Tigers’ homecoming game against Concordia of Selma is set for the same day.
Tuskegee was picked as the West favorite, followed by Miles, Kentucky State, Stillman and Lane. Albany State, the defending champion, was the top choice in the East. Fort Valley State was picked second, followed by Morehouse, Clark Atlanta and Benedict. Albany State was chosen to win the overall conference title.
TUSCALOOSA, AL | Thomas (T.C.) Logan’s last season with the Stillman College football team coincides with Teddy Keaton’s first as the Tigers’ head coach, but they both want the same thing.
Keaton wants to build a winning program at his alma mater. Logan, who’ll be playing for his third head coach in four years, wants to close out his career with a championship.
“I really don’t have specific goals, statistics-wise, of how many catches or how many touchdowns, but I really do want to be an All-American in this game,” said Logan, a 6-foot-3, 245-pound tight end from Gulfport, Miss. “I want to bring home a conference championship because I’m more of a team person, rather an individual stat person.”
Stillman, which won three of its last four games, finished at 3-8 overall and 2-7 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2010. L.C. Cole, the head coach for two seasons, was dismissed and replaced by Keaton, who started coaching as a member of Theophilus Danzy’s staff at Stillman back in 1999.
Tuscaloosa, AL- The Stillman Tigers have announced their 2011 football schedule. The Tigers' open the season at home and will finish the season at home. First year head coach Teddy Keaton will lead the Tigers in an eleven game schedule, six home games and five away. The scheduled season will feature one DI-AA, two CIAA schools, and seven SIAC conference games.
Stillman will open the season at home on Sept. 3rd when the Tigers face CIAA defending champions Shaw University. The Tigers will get on the road for a three-game stretch—making a short trip to Birmingham on Sept. 10th to play DI-AA Samford University. Stillman will then travel north to Frankfort, Ken., on Sept. 17th to face Kentucky State University, and then south for another short trip to Tuskegee, Ala., on Sept 24th to faced Tuskegee University.
The Tigers will return home for three games to face Lane College on Oct. 1st, Benedict College on Oct. 8th and Chowan University on Oct. 15th .The Tigers will then return to the road and travel to Fort Valley, Ga., on Oct. 22nd to play Fort Valley State University. The Tigers will return home for a Thursday night match-up against in-state rival Miles College on Oct. 27th. The following week, the Tigers will make their final regular season road trip to play Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov. 5th.

TUSCALOOSA, AL | The Stillman College baseball team earned an automatic bid into the 2011 NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament by winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship two weeks ago.
On Sunday, the Tigers were officially invited to the NCAA championship party. The tournament is comprised of 48 teams at eight regional sites. The South Regional consists of eight teams and the West Regional consists of four teams. The six-team regionals are the Atlantic, East, Central, Midwest, Southeast and South Central.
Stillman (26-17) will play in the NCAA Division II South Regional, which begins Thursday at Jim Spooner Field on the University of West Florida campus in Pensacola. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division II World Series in Cary, N.C., on May 29.

ALBANY, Ga. - The Stillman College baseball team's quest for a fourth Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship was put on hold Saturday afternoon at the Paul Eames Complex.
The Tigers were scheduled to play in the championship game at 5 p.m. but the game has been rescheduled for today at 11 a.m. after the Albany State University Rams won both elimination games against Tuskegee and Claflin to reach the championship game.
NCAA and SIAC rules prohibit a team from playing three games in the same calendar day, so the championship game was rescheduled for today.
Stillman (24-17) is the only undefeated team remaining in the SIAC Tournament and needs just one win to claim the school's fourth conference title in the last five years. The Tigers won tournament crowns in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
ALBANY — An Albany State baseball team that entered the 2011 season with uncertainty and inexperience is now two wins away from winning its second straight SIAC Tournament championship.
“Everybody doubted us because we had a bunch of freshmen,” ASU interim coach Kenyon Conner said about a Rams squad that doesn’t have a single senior. “They didn’t think we would win 20 games, but we did. They didn’t think we would make it to the championship game.”
On Saturday, they did that, too. The sixth-seeded Rams (29-24) capitalized on a pair of strong pitching performances to beat Tuskegee University and Claflin University in back-to-back loser’s bracket games at Paul Eames Park, advancing to today’s championship series with Stillman College. Tuscaloosa, AL | The Stillman College softball team picked up two more victories Thursday, as their two starting pitchers threw one-hit and no-hit games to win over Concordia 19-0 and 16-0. The Tigers were honoring their two seniors, Anjelica Nixon of Tuscaloosa and captain Janay Hudson of Moultrie, Ga. With the two wins, Stillman improves to 14-21 overall and 8-11 in conference play.
Freshman Brittany Perry picked up her ninth win as she recorded her fifth shutout in the 19-0 victory. Perry allowed one hit and struck out 12. Perry was a leader offensively as well, as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Perry also had two singles and walked once with one stolen base and three runs scored. Hudson was 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and a walk. Hudson scored four runs, stole two bases, and had one RBI.

TUSCALOOSA | The Stillman College baseball team, riding a six-game conference winning streak, will take on Albany State in a key Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series this weekend at historic Eagle Stadium in Ozark.
The teams will play a nine-inning game tonight at 7, then wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The doubleheader will consist of two, seven-inning games.
Stillman (12-13, 6-0 SIAC) will serve as the home team for the three-game series to be played in one of the state’s oldest minor league ballparks.
OZARK, AL – Several baseball fans and players from Tuscaloosa and Albany, Ga., are expected to be in Ozark this weekend for the city’s first baseball game with four-year, Division 2 college players.
Baseball teams from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa and Albany State University are playing a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Eagle Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday and will have a double-header at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Department of Leisure Services Director Steve Sherrill said Auburn University in Montgomery will play at the stadium against Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga., on April 12.
The stadium, which seats 800, was built in 1946 for the Ozark Cardinals Class D Minor League Baseball team. Sherrill said renovations to the facility have since drawn several junior college and high school baseball teams to the city for regional and state tournaments.
For a while, it looked as if Stillman's dream run in the NCAA Division II tournament might continue as the Tigers held a 43-42 halfttime edge against regional host Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night. Alas, the Chargers proved too much, overcoming Stillman and eventually holding on for an 88-81 victory in a Sweet 16 matchup at Spragins Hall.

Huntsville, AL-- Stillman reached yet another milestone with a win over the Florida Southern Moccasins 92-86 and advanced to the NCAA DII South Region final for the first time in school’s history in Spragins Hall at the University of Alabama campus.
The Tigers trailed 38-51 at the half. Following the half, the Tigers overcame a 13-point deficit to tie the game 56-56 at the 14:43 mark. Both teams exchanged baskets and enjoyed the lead until the 5:31 mark when junior LaDarius Rhone made a 3-points basket and the Tigers went ahead for the last time and held it to the end of regulation.
LaJay Sears led the Tigers with 31 points on 10-20 shooting from the field and 7-8 from the free-throw line. Sears was followed by Kevin Johnson and Lee Riley both with 16 points. LaDarius Rhone chipped in 14 points. Rakee Anderson, despite not having a great shooting performance, added a game-high 11 assists.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Josh Magette, who typically holds the basketball game in his hands, was at the moment holding a thin strand of twine in his right hand. It was a piece of a basketball net, surgically removed Tuesday night in the middle of the warmest, loudest, lovingest, darndest bit of celebration and history this building has seen.
"You can't dream of something like this," said Magette, the UAH point guard. A couple of weeks ago, he had collected another piece of twine, from UAH's official coronation as Gulf South Conference East Division champion.
Huntsville, AL - A big second half by Stillman wiped out a 13-point lead by the Moccasins and the Tigers ended the Moccasins' season, 92-86, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II South Regional at Huntsville, Ala., Sunday night. The Moccasins finished the season at 23-9.
The Moccasins had shot 61.6 percent from the field en route to their 51-38 advantage at halftime, but it took Stillman just over five minutes in the second half to erase the deficit. The Tigers pulled even at 56-56 with 14:43 remaining, as they hit seven of their first nine shots in the period.
Stillman didn't take the lead for good until the 5:31 mark, when LaDarius Rhone sank a three-pointer to put the Tigers in front 74-72 and the Moccasins never saw the lead again. The Tigers were as hot from the field in the second half as the Moccasins were in the first half, shooting 60.7 percent, while the FSC shot just 34.4 percent in the second half.
A big halftime lead can turn out to be a bad thing and it was for the Mocs on Sunday. The Florida Southern College men's basketball team led by 13 at the break and couldn't keep its intensity level high enough afterward to avoid a 92-86 loss to Stillman in the NCAA Division II South Regional semifinals in Huntsville, Ala.
"They came out, got on a roll and we couldn't stop them," said head coach Linc Darner, whose Mocs ended their season with a 23-9 record.
Stillman (23-7) stormed back with an 18-5 run after the break to tie it at 56 and took the lead for good with 5:31 to play.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- While the calendar turned to 2011, the Benedict men's basketball team was beginning to wonder just what kind of year it had to look forward to.
The Tigers already were off to a disappointing 2-4 start, had 11 new guys playing and lost a trio of returning starters for reasons nine-year coach Fred Watson would rather not discuss. Marcus Goode, the 6-foot-10 sophomore, had yet to play a single minute because of transfer rules.
"It was a little tough at the beginning," Watson said. That tough beginning ended as midnight struck on Jan. 1, 2011. After six games on the bench, Goode was eligible to play.
"When we started, everyone kind of counted us out," Watson said. "I knew if we could keep going until the big fella got here, we'd be OK."
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Stillman coach Michael Grant's philosophy is a shooter's dream. If you're open, pull the trigger, he says. Pass up an open jumper? Be prepared to take a seat.
"Now when we play and we pass up open shots, the bench is telling them to shoot the ball," said Grant, the Tigers' third-year coach. "It's expected now."
While Grant's offensive mantra may run contrary to more conservative coaches, the Tigers' high-octane attack has put Stillman (22-7) into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in school history. The seventh-seeded Tigers will meet No. 2 seed Harding at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the opening round of the South Regional hosted at Spragins Hall.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- The Clark Atlanta Panthers may be the eighth seed out of eight teams, but don't think they will be intimidated by the prospect of playing South Regional host UAH on its home floor.
"Every time I pass Georgia Tech, I lose cell reception," said Clark Atlanta coach Darryl Jacobs earlier this week, moments after it happens. "It must be because we took them to overtime in November."
Just like UAH did with Alabama, the Panthers put a scare into their Division I neighbors during the exhibition season. That came on the heels of them falling by only seven points at last year's regional to eventual champion Valdosta State.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Are you ready for some basketball?
Eight of the best NCAA Division II college basketball teams are in town for the South Regional, which begins Saturday at Spragins Hall on the University of Alabama-Huntsville campus. The winner will have a chance to play for the national championship in Springfield, Mass., March 23-26.
"Being in the tournament is one thing and being able to host it is like a dream," UAH guard Tyler Hanback said. "It's going to be a lot of fun. I can't wait."
Saturday: Harding (25-4) vs. Stillman (21-7) at 2:30 p.m. UAH (26-4) vs. Clark Atlanta (22-8), SIAC Champions at 5:30 p.m. Arkansas Tech (24-5) and Benedict (21-7) at 7:30 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA - The Stillman College men's basketball team may have been disappointed with its last loss, but the Tigers get to play again.
Coach Michael Grant's Tigers were selected as an at-large team for the NCAA Division II playoffs. Stillman (22-7) plays Harding University from Arkansas (25-4) on Saturday at the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Stillman is the No. 7 seed. Harding is the No. 2 seed. If the Tigers can win three games, they will advance to the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass., the city where James Naismith invented basketball.
Grant directed the Tigers to seven wins in his first season, and 18 last year.
Indianapolis, IN - The NCAA Division II announced the 2011 Tournament Bracket and the Stillman Tigers received an at-large bid. The Tigers finished the regular season ranked 8th in the southern region. The Tigers fell one game short of winning their first conference championship in five years. Stillman will not have far to travel to compete. The host school for the Southern Regional is the University of Alabama-Huntsville. “Because it’s not that far travel, the players will have time to get plenty of rest,” said head coach Michael Grant.
Stillman was one of three Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) teams to make the Tournament. The other schools were Benedict College of Columbia, South Carolina, the regular season winner and Clark-Atlanta University of Atlanta, Ga., the conference champion. The Tigers came in second to both teams. Also making the Tournament for the women was the Fort Valley State University of Fort Valley, Ga.
ATLANTA | Clark Atlanta University stopped Stillman College one win short of a title Saturday night as the Tigers fell 78-71 in the championship game of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
Clark Atlanta led by 23 points at the half, leading 50-27 going into the break, but Stillman came back to take the lead late in the game. In the final three minutes, however, the Panther’s David Brown made two key baskets to put Clark Atlanta ahead and take the win. Brown ended the game with 20 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Panthers were Najee Lane with 14, Royce Hamilton with 11 and Antonio Burch with 10.
Two local football players signed to play in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this week. Marbury running back Charles Averhart is headed to Stillman, and St. Jude defensive back Rashaad Williams signed with Lane College.
"I've put in a lot of hard work from my freshman season through my senior year, and it feels good to know I'm going to the next level," Averhart said. For Williams, earning a college scholarship helped fulfill a promise.
"This a dream come true," Williams said. "Before my mom passed away, this was something I promised her I would do." Williams' mother (Dionne Johnson) passed away when he was a sophomore. As the oldest of four siblings, Williams said his mother and father (Sedgwick Williams) helped mold his work ethic and attitude.
TUSCALOOSA, AL | Currently at the top of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, the Stillman College men’s basketball team proved why when it took on the Claflin University Panthers on Monday. The Tigers beat the Panthers on Senior Night, 62-55.
“We really played together as a team tonight,” Stillman coach Michael Grant said. “We did a pretty good job of taking care of the basketball, we just really took our time and then we hit our open shots. Any time you can get hit your open shots and hit your free throws, you have a shot and that’s what we did tonight.”
After a slow start where both teams remained scoreless for the first five minutes, Claflin scored first with a basket by senior center Efe Uwadiae. Stillman (17-5, 15-4 in SIAC) answered back a just 35 seconds later on a field goal by Tiger senior guard Rakee Anderson.
TUSCALOOSA - L.C. Cole has been dismissed after two seasons as head football coach at Stillman College. “They were saying they were ready to make a change,” Cole said Wednesday. “That’s all I was informed of. Nothing I could do about it.”
Cole received word of the firing in a meeting on Tuesday with Curtis Campbell, Stillman’s athletics director. “We just thought we needed to go in a new direction,” Campbell said. “Our program wasn’t progressing the way I thought it should be and I just thought it was time to make a change. “I think L.C. is a good coach, but we just felt it was time to make a change at Stillman. I wish L.C. Cole the best and I’m sure he’ll do some great things in the future.”
Two days after dismissing L.C. Cole, the Stillman Tigers have a new football coach. Stillman officials have tapped Teddy Keaton, a 1999 graduate of the college and offensive coordinator at Webber International University in Babson Park, Fla as the new head football coach for the Tigers.
Keaton began his coaching career as an assistant football coach and director of football operation at Stillman. As an assistant coach for six seasons, he served as running backs coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator.
TUSCALOOSA | Desmond Holloway, who practiced all week as a wide receiver, contributed as a quarterback on Saturday to help the Stillman College football team celebrate a homecoming victory. Holloway threw three touchdown passes in the second half, and the Tigers routed Central State of Ohio, 44-13.
Holloway replaced starting quarterback Chris Mayabb, who was injured in the first half. “I think his neck was messed up or something,” Holloway said. “But he’s going to be all right. He’s coming back. “We were just trying to get a win for Stillman, trying to finish up strong so we can start off good for next year. We just knew we had to fight together and come strong in the second half as a family.”
ALBANY, GA — Rams fans, it’s officially time to start thinking about a 14th conference championship. Albany State cruised to a 44-5 win against Stillman on Saturday to remain undefeated at 9-0 overall and 8-0 in the SIAC on the season, and set up a Fountain City Classic against Fort Valley State (8-1 overall, 7-1 in the SIAC) with a bit more on the line than bragging rights.
“This is championship week,” said senior receiver Ronnie Childs, who finished with four catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. “We’re going to work hard every day, lift weights two or three times a week and let (offensive coordinator Steve) Smith put us in a position to make plays and let our defense carry us. All we have to do is put up some points.”
It didn’t take many points Saturday as the Rams held the Tigers (1-8, 1-7) to just 5 — the lowest of any ASU opponent this season.
ALBANY, GA — Ronnie Childs Sr. has been to every single one of his son’s football games.
From little league to college, the star wideout’s father did whatever he had to do to give him his support, even if it meant missing work. So it’s no surprise Childs Sr., along with his wife Patissia, were there for the senior’s last regular-season home game, waiting outside the locker room to congratulate him on yet another productive game Saturday following ASU’s 44-5 win vs. Stillman.
“It’s (possibly) the last time I’m gonna see him (here) and I know Ronnie’s gonna miss it,” Childs Sr. said. “(The stadium) seemed like part of us, so I don’t know how to take it. It’s the last one, unless we come back for the playoffs.”
Emotions overcame Lane College football coach Derrick Burroughs after the Dragons lost to Stillman College 26-25 on the final play Saturday. "I don't know, I don't know," Burroughs, with his hands on top of his head said. "What to say, I don't know." The last second loss mirrored Lane's 30-23 overtime loss to Benedict College, October 10.
Burroughs and Lane were stunned as Stillman came away with the win after Damien Ford took a lateral from Samuel Barry on a Hail Mary pass play that covered 65 yards. "I had just said a prayer on the sidelines," Ford said. "And (God) pulled us through."
Lane defensive back Jerell Alexander looked as if he had picked off Stillman quarterback Demarco Starks' desperation pass at the Lane 20, but fate found Stillman (1-7, 1-6) and heartbreak found Lane (0-8, 0-7).
TUSCALOOSA | Turnovers kept Stillman College in the game, but it was a costly turnover made by the Tigers’ offense that put the game out of reach and helped Morehouse College to a 38-24 win Saturday.
With just under four minutes left, Stillman got the ball back trailing by a touchdown. Quarterback Desmond Holloway fumbled the snap, and Olajawaun Gooch picked it up for Morehouse and ran it back 35 yards for a touchdown.
“That’s the nature of our football team,” Morehouse head coach Rich Freeman said. “We’ve got a lot of guys who are very capable of making big plays, explosive plays.”
