Stillman rebounds with win against Clark Atlanta
Atlanta, Georgia -- The Stillman College football team found a way to rebound from two tough losses as the Tigers defeated the Clark Atlanta Panthers, 16-6, Thursday night. After surrendering six points in the first quarter, Stillman broke into the scoring column as Alejandro Perez-Huerta nailed a 23-yard field goal with 29 seconds left in the first half. In the third quarter, Stillman quarterback Dondre Purnell hit Deandre Holley for an 8-yard scoring play to give the Tigers a 10-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Huerta made field goals of 48 and 28 yards to make the final scoring margin 16-6. CAU outgained Stillman 242-240 while maintaining time of possession 31:01 to 28:59.
Purnell finished 14 of 21passing for 168 yards with one touchdown while rushing 15 times for 27 yards. Reese Sturgis caught four passes for 34 yards while Holley rushed for 33 yards on nine carries.

24-3 Tuskegee victory a bright spot on difficult year
Tuskegee, Alabama -- The 2011 campaign has been difficult in many ways for Willie Slater and his program. Tuskegee isn't comfortably resting atop the conference standings like in seasons past and Slater will finish with his worst record as head football coach since taking over in 2006. Saturday afternoon, however, brought some normalcy and smiles back to the Golden Tigers in the form of a 24-3 victory over Clark Atlanta.
"I think we've been getting better all year," said Slater, whose worst season at TU was last year's 9-2 mark. "We've gotten better every week, but we're still making a lot of mistakes. We needed this win, so we'll take whatever we can get and any way we can get it right about now."
It was the fifth consecutive win over the visiting Panthers (2-7, 1-5 SIAC), who trail 58-15-3 all-time in a series that dates back to 1902. Tuskegee's last loss in the series came during Slater's inaugural campaign. Tuskegee (3-5, 3-3) aims to string together its first pair of wins when Miles College visits Abbott Memorial Stadium next week.

Miles 19, Clark Atlanta 16
Atlanta, Georgia -- A homecoming victory for Clark Atlanta University in front of a crowd of more than 20,000, was conceivable until Miles College’s kicker Patton Chambers’ 18-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining in the game lifted the Golden Bears over CAU 19-16 Saturday at Panther Stadium.
Anderson Davis put Clark Atlanta (2-4, SIAC 2-2) on the board first with a three-yard touchdown run in the second quarter which gave the Panthers a slim advantage. Miles (3-3, SIAC 2-1) then tied the game with its own one-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback David Thomas. A 7-7 tie remained at the half.
Running back Rashad Lewis’ three-yard run put the Panthers ahead 13-6, before a Miles safety by Alexander Morris made it a four-point game, 13-9, in the third quarter.
Miles struck early in the fourth quarter with a 10-yard pass from David Thomas to K.C. Logan that gave the Golden Bears their first lead of the game at 16-13. But the Panthers orchestrated a 64-yard drive on its next possession which led to a Kemuel Lawrence 30-yard field goal conversion that knotted the game at 16.
A 38-yard reception by Vondragu Hudson moved the Golden Bears to the Panthers four-yard line with 58 seconds remaining, and Chambers’ chip shot from the one-yard sealed the road win for Miles.

Morehouse College dominates Clark Atlanta
Atlanta, GA - Morehouse College football still rules its neighborhood. The Maroon Tigers beat Clark Atlanta 30-2 Thursday night at Morehouse's B. T. Harvey Stadium. Morehouse earned its third consecutive victory and ninth in the last 12 meetings against its West End border rival.Morehouse (4-1, 2-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) kept pace with Albany State at the top of the East division. Clark Atlanta (2-3, 1-1), which leads the all-time series 48-33-2, fell behind 13-0 and never recovered.
“You had historical implications and also to keep us in the race for the conference championship,” Morehouse coach Rich Freeman said. “It was a big win for us. The guys know the magnitude. We are trying to make generational change. We are not just looking at this season.”
The game set up as a clash between Clark Atlanta's stout defense against Morehouse's prolific offense. Morehouse entered the game leading the SIAC in scoring and yards while Clark Atlanta was No. 1 in points allowed and third in yards surrendered.

Lane at Clark Atlanta
Clark Atlanta won both teams' opener in 2010 at Lane Field 20-6 after scoring a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break a tie. The Dragons appear to have an improved offense this season after racking up 307 total yards last week in their win at NAIA Edward Waters College.
Quarterback Alan Ferguson completed 18 of 20 passes for 157 yards while rushing 12 times for 51 yards. Cordero Cooper was Ferguson's main target, catching nine passes for 67 yards.

Georgia State hammers Clark Atlanta
Atlanta, GA - Georgia State hoped to see good things from its new quarterback, revamped rushing attack and rebuilt defense in its season opener against Clark Atlanta.
Bo Schlechter threw three touchdown passes in his first start, including two to Albert Wilson, with nary a turnover. Donald Russell led a rushing attack with two touchdowns, and the defense intercepted two passes in a 41-7 victory Friday night at the Georgia Dome.
Russell, a transfer from Kentucky, scored the first two times he touched the ball on runs of 20 and 3 yards to lead the offense. Coach Bill Curry wanted to see improvement in the area because the Panthers averaged a meager 123.3 yards per game last season.
"Donald makes a difference when he carries the ball," Curry said of Russell, who had 56 of the team's 146 rushing yards. And that difference? "I believe it's downhill running," Russell said. "Ive been taught at my previous school to get the yards I can get, that's good enough."

Oct. 22's ASU vs. Clark Atlanta football game moved to Valdosta
ALBANY, GA — Before a single snap has even been hiked on the Albany State football team’s 2011 season, it’s already turning into an instant classic — literally.
The Rams, who were already slated to play in three “Classics” this season when the schedule was released earlier this month, added another one this week when the road game against Clark Atlanta was curiously moved from Atlanta to Valdosta by the Panthers, who will call the game the South Georgia Heritage Classic.
“It was Clark’s home game, and it’s their call,” ASU Sports Information Director Edythe Bradley told The Herald on Friday shortly after the announcement was made. “We’ve been hearing that moving the game was something (Clark) had been looking to do, and I guess a sponsor must’ve approached them to make it happen. (Financially), it’s a good thing for our school.”
Money saved or not, head coach Mike White was not a fan of the move.

CAU's Darryl Jacobs Named Head Coach at Virginia State
Virginia State University has named Darryl Jacobs as the new head coach of the men’s basketball program on April 4th.Darryl Jacobs will be the 19th Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Virginia State University. Jacobs comes to Virginia State University after spending the last five years at Clark Atlanta University as the Head Men's Basketball Coach. During his tenure at Clark Atlanta University, Jacobs led the program to its first winning season in 10 years during the 2007-2008 season. That same season he also led the program to the semi-final round of the conference tournament.
During the 2008-2009 season, Jacobs led the program to its second consecutive winning season in 12 years. Clark Atlanta also won its first SIAC conference championship in 14 years under Coach Jacobs’ leadership during the 2009-2010 season. Clark Atlanta also advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament as the #5 seed. Prior to the 2010-2011 Clark Atlanta was ranked #25 nationally. Clark Atlanta finished the past 2010-2011 season with a 22-9 record overall and made it to the SIAC championship for the second season in a row. Clark Atlanta again advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
VSU introduces new men's basketball coach
ETTRICK - Standing behind a lectern in the two-day old Gateway Dining and Events Center, Virginia State University Athletic Director Peggy Davis introduced another welcome addition to the Ettrick campus at a press conference on Monday.
Amid much applause and even a few "woo-woos," Darryl Jacobs was unveiled as the 19th coach of the VSU men's basketball team. Formerly at the helm of Clark Atlanta University, Jacobs boasts 22 years of coaching experience.

Stepping out on a high note, Darryl Jacobs announced Friday that he will step down as head men's basketball coach at Clark Atlanta to pursue an as-yet unnamed opportunity.
Jacobs guided the Panthers to the 2010-2011 SIAC championship, finished second in the postseason tournament and led the team to the NCAA Division II national tournament.

NCAA South Regional: UAHuntsville rolls past Clark-Atlanta
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- The top-seeded UAHuntsville Chargers defeated Clark-Atlanta Saturday evening 77-63 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional at Spragins Hall. The victory improves the Chargers to 27-4 on the season and advances them to a second round game Sunday at 7 against the winner of the Arkansas Tech-Benedict game, played late Saturday night.UAH had been 1-4 in previous NCAA tournaments. This was its first NCAA victory since topping Lemoyne-Owen in 2000. The lopsided win was an anomaly in this tournament, with Florida Southern downing Rollins by two in the opener and Stillman eliminating Harding in overtime.
UAH charges past Clark Atlanta to South Region semis
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Behind a 19-point, nine-assist night from junior guard Josh Magette (Birmingham), the top seeded Alabama-Huntsville men's basketball team fought off a pesky eighth seeded Clark Atlanta team 77-63 in the first-ever South Region game hosted at Spragins Hall in Huntsville.
Whether it was a key pass or key steal, Magette controlled the game for the Blue and White despite the Panthers best attempts to corral the All-Region player. No stranger to highlight reel plays, Magette made a huge layup early in the first half on his way to the ground that brought the Charger faithful to their feet. The bucket put the junior over the 1,000-point mark becoming just the 20th player in UAH history to reach the mark.
“I had a great pass from Conner Blasi and the play really got everyone into the game," noted Magette."“It felt like the game was never going to get here. We were ready to play tonight at home.”

Division II South Regional: Benedict's Marcus Goode gives Tigers their claws
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- While the calendar turned to 2011, the Benedict men's basketball team was beginning to wonder just what kind of year it had to look forward to.
The Tigers already were off to a disappointing 2-4 start, had 11 new guys playing and lost a trio of returning starters for reasons nine-year coach Fred Watson would rather not discuss. Marcus Goode, the 6-foot-10 sophomore, had yet to play a single minute because of transfer rules.
"It was a little tough at the beginning," Watson said. That tough beginning ended as midnight struck on Jan. 1, 2011. After six games on the bench, Goode was eligible to play.
"When we started, everyone kind of counted us out," Watson said. "I knew if we could keep going until the big fella got here, we'd be OK."

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Stillman coach Michael Grant's philosophy is a shooter's dream. If you're open, pull the trigger, he says. Pass up an open jumper? Be prepared to take a seat.
"Now when we play and we pass up open shots, the bench is telling them to shoot the ball," said Grant, the Tigers' third-year coach. "It's expected now."
While Grant's offensive mantra may run contrary to more conservative coaches, the Tigers' high-octane attack has put Stillman (22-7) into the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second time in school history. The seventh-seeded Tigers will meet No. 2 seed Harding at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the opening round of the South Regional hosted at Spragins Hall.

Just like UAH did with Alabama, the Panthers put a scare into their Division I neighbors during the exhibition season. That came on the heels of them falling by only seven points at last year's regional to eventual champion Valdosta State.

Stillman loses in title game
Clark Atlanta led by 23 points at the half, leading 50-27 going into the break, but Stillman came back to take the lead late in the game. In the final three minutes, however, the Panther’s David Brown made two key baskets to put Clark Atlanta ahead and take the win. Brown ended the game with 20 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Panthers were Najee Lane with 14, Royce Hamilton with 11 and Antonio Burch with 10.

Morehouse defeats Clark Atlanta
Morehouse had just enough grit and talent to gut out an ugly 17-7 win over Clark Atlanta on Saturday. With the win, Morehouse (7-2, 5-2 SIAC) kept alive its slim chances of playing in the postseason. Clark (4-5, 3-4) will play Benedict on Saturday for a shot at a .500 season.Morehouse kicker Ian Mullen kicked a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter to put Morehouse ahead, 10-7, a lead they would not relinquish. Saturday was the culmination of a rough week for the kicker, who missed two key extra points last week in a 13-12 loss to Albany State.
“I was happy for him,” Morehouse coach Rich Freeman said. “I think it did a lot for him because he was really down.”

KSU football: Mistakes bury Breds
The Kentucky State football team entered Saturday’s game against Clark Atlanta with the hope that it could score a win for its fans on Homecoming. Four quarters later, KSU coach Wayne Dickens walked off the field thinking things couldn’t have gone much worse for his team. The Thorobreds lost to the Panthers 19-7 under a mountain of fumbles, missed tackles, penalties and blown assignments.
“We took turns today making every conceivable mistake you can make in a football game,” Dickens said. “And it cost us.” Mistakes plagued KSU from its first drive, which ended when junior quarterback Jerrel Noland lost 17 yards on a mishandled snap and the Thorobreds couldn’t recover the yardage.

FVSU Wildcats gain some more revenge
Fort Valley State is in the middle of its revenge tour, trying to take care of teams that beat the Wildcats a year ago. They’re 2-for-2. FVSU never trailed and scored in the final minute of the second quarter to take control en route to a 40-16 win Saturday over Clark Atlanta in SIAC action.
The Wildcats won their fourth straight game to improve to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Panthers fell to 3-3 and 3-2.
Now FVSU can focus on one of its two games of the year. Defending SIAC champion Tuskegee visits Fort Valley in six days with the loser all but being eliminated from postseason contention.

Clark Atlanta Finds Enough Offense to Stop Stillman
It took almost the rest of the game, but Clark Atlanta found its offense as Ronald Thompson capped a 93-yard drive with a one-yard dive as the Panthers defeated Stillman 19-14 in CAU's home opener Saturday. The score was an exciting end to CAU's homecoming, but the excitement, unfortunately, did not end there for the fans.
Despite the touchdown, the Panthers (3-2, 3-1 SIAC) had to wait with baited breath as Stillman recovered a poor squib kick on the ensuing kick-off at Clark Atlanta's 38 yard line.
