NCAA South Regional: UAHuntsville rolls past Clark-Atlanta

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- The top-seeded UAHuntsville Chargers defeated Clark-Atlanta Saturday evening 77-63 in the first round of the NCAA Division II South Regional at Spragins Hall. The victory improves the Chargers to 27-4 on the season and advances them to a second round game Sunday at 7 against the winner of the Arkansas Tech-Benedict game, played late Saturday night.

UAH had been 1-4 in previous NCAA tournaments. This was its first NCAA victory since topping Lemoyne-Owen in 2000. The lopsided win was an anomaly in this tournament, with Florida Southern downing Rollins by two in the opener and Stillman eliminating Harding in overtime.

UAH charges past Clark Atlanta to South Region semis

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Behind a 19-point, nine-assist night from junior guard Josh Magette (Birmingham), the top seeded Alabama-Huntsville men's basketball team fought off a pesky eighth seeded Clark Atlanta team 77-63 in the first-ever South Region game hosted at Spragins Hall in Huntsville.

Whether it was a key pass or key steal, Magette controlled the game for the Blue and White despite the Panthers best attempts to corral the All-Region player. No stranger to highlight reel plays, Magette made a huge layup early in the first half on his way to the ground that brought the Charger faithful to their feet. The bucket put the junior over the 1,000-point mark becoming just the 20th player in UAH history to reach the mark.

“I had a great pass from Conner Blasi and the play really got everyone into the game," noted Magette."“It felt like the game was never going to get here. We were ready to play tonight at home.”

2nd-half explosion puts DSU in D-II semis

ALBANY, GA. — Delta State spotted undefeated Albany State an early touchdown, then used a dominating second-half performance to beat the Golden Rams 28-7 Saturday and advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II football playoffs.

DSU (10-3) will play Shepherd University (11-2) of West Virginia in the semifinals on Saturday. The site and time will be announced today. The game will be televised live by CBS College Sports.
Shepherd advanced with a 49-14 victory on Saturday over Mercyhurst.

Albany State (11-1) took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards for a touchdown, scoring on a 35-yard pass from Stanley Jennings to Ronnie Childs. With the game barely four minutes old, DSU trailed.

ALBANY, Ga. — The Rams came into their Division II quarterfinal playoff game Saturday on the verge of making history. Unfortunately, they repeated it. Albany State fell to another Gulf South Conference team in the postseason, this time, 28-7, to Delta State on Saturday at Albany State University Coliseum, thus ending another magical undefeated season. Only this go round, the Rams beat themselves.

“(Delta State) just played better than we did (Saturday). We made a lot of mistakes and they capitalized on them, and that really was the difference in the game,” ASU head coach Mike White said. “We talked a little about 2004 (when we lost to Valdosta State in the quarterfinals) and how we’ve (had) this opportunity before. We didn’t want to get behind because they have such a good combination on offense, so we knew we had to stay on top of them.

Albany State scores the first points of the game Saturday against Delta State in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, then doesn't score again the rest of the game in a 28-7 loss to the Statesmen, ending their amazing season at 11-1 and two wins shy of the national championship.

SO LONG, SENIORS: A historic ASU team says goodbye to historic players

ALBANY, GA — This season has been one to remember for Albany State football fans. Close games, winning streaks and home-field advantage in the playoffs mean the area won’t be forgetting the 2010 Rams any time soon. But with the 28-7 defeat to Delta State on Saturday in the D-II quarterfinals, ASU lost more than just a game. It lost a bunch of key seniors — Jacob Hardwick, Ronnie Childs, Mario Fuller, Prathon Wilkerson, LiRonnie Davis and Robert Welton to name a few.

“That’s always a difficult one for a coach, because most of those guys are five-year guys. You’ve been with them for a while,” ASU head coach Mike White said. “It’s a good relationship and we hate to see it go out this way.”

University of Central Arkansas Claws UAPB 41-17

LITTLE ROCK, AR — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff had No. 19 University of Central Arkansas on its heels in the first half. But the Bears asserted themselves in the second half and downed the Golden Lions, 41-17, in the first Claw and Paw Classic at War Memorial Stadium.

UAPB (0-3) was stingy on defense limiting the Bears to 37 yards and sacking vaunted UCA quarterback Nathan Brown twice, but the Golden Lions couldn't muster anything until late in the first quarter when Martell Mallett got things going late in the quarter with a 66-yard run that set up a Carlos Reyes 34-yard field goal at the 12:55 mark in the second to put UAPB up 3-0. UCA (3-0) responded with a seven-play, 71-yard drive that Marquez Branson ended with a 12-yard touchdown reception from Nathan Brown.

Div. II Henderson State routs UAPB Golden Lions, 34-0

Henderson State took on its second NCAA Division I (FCS) opponent in as many weeks, but this to time the Reddies were the dominate team as Henderson rolled to a 34-0 beating of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium. The Reddies recorded only the second win over a Division I (FCS) opponent, with the first being a 41-35 win over Hal Mumme’s Southeastern Louisiana team in 2003.

The third largest crowd in Henderson State history of 9,537 witnessed Roch Charpentier complete 25 of 49 passes for 352 yards including touchdown tosses of 19 yards to Sean Stennis and 69 yards to Garett Canning. The Reddies struggled with the ground game totaling just 116 yards with Bernard Palmer carrying the ball 15 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

The Reddie defense had no mercy on UAPB quarterback Gvona Turner sacking the freshman nine times. Junior defensive end Colrett Boyd led the Reddie defense with three sacks while Demarcus Robinson totaled eight tackles. The Reddie defense limited the Lions to just 217 yards of total offense. Palmer capped the first scoring drive of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter.

The five-play 26-yard scoring drive included a 17-yard pass from Charpentier to senior wideout Stennis. Stennis was on the receiving end of another pass from Charpentier at the beginning of the second period after Darnei Bates recovered a UAPB fumble. Henderson State took the lead into halftime, 14-0.

Henderson State took the opening kickoff of the third quarter looking to extend the lead. The Reddies drove the ball 55 yards in 10 plays before Palmer extended the lead to 20-0 after a three yard touchdown run. After another costly UAPB turnover, the Reddies capitalized with a five play scoring drive, capped by the 62 yard Charpentier to Manning touchdown reception.

As UAPB tried to battle back as the fourth quarter began, the Reddies’ Michael Buse blocked a punt and took the ball the remaining 10 yards into the end zone, capping the HSU victory, 34-0. Henderson State totaled 468 yards of total offense while the defense forced four lost UAPB fumbles.

The Reddies return to action Saturday in Flourence, Alabama against #3 North Alabama.

The road doesn't get easier for the 0-2 Golden Lions as they face Southland power Central Arkansas in Little Rock at 6 pm on Saturday. The UCA Bears (2-0) are currently ranked #22 in the latest Division I FCS Polls and defeated Henderson State 38-14 on Aug. 28. UAPB has lost to two Division II Gulf South Conference teams by the combine scores of 7-55.

PINE BLUFF, AK — First-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman said he wanted to raise the profile of his football program, and so far he’s getting his wish. People in Arkansas have been talking about the Golden Lions this week, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

While not quite on par with Arkansas State beating Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, UAPB’s season-opening 21-7 home loss to Division II Arkansas-Monticello grabbed its fair share of attention. This was a program two years removed from playing in its conference championship game and starting the season with optimism to spare, only to fall to a bottom-rung Gulf South Conference program that had won six games in the past three seasons.

So the loss qualified as a shock, one that still stings as the Golden Lions prepare for a much more highly touted Gulf South opponent in Henderson State.
