Maryland Eastern Shore was picked to finish ninth in the MEAC Preseason Poll.

THE LADY JASPERS
The Lady Jaspers (4-2), who are coming off a 68-51 home victory over New Hampshire, have won three straight and are two games above .500 for the first time in Head Coach John Olenowski's tenure. Manhattan is looking to win four straight for the first time since Jan. 2-11, 2004.

UMES Hawks will try to break through

PRINCESS ANNE -- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team finished 8-8 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play last season, sporting its best record in close to a decade. While, in past campaigns, breaking even in the conference would be welcomed, UMES coach Frankie Allen is far from satisfied. Allen, in his third year at the helm, looks to continue with the progression of a program that has seen its go from 4-28 in 2007-08 to 7-23 in 2008-09 to 11-21 last season.

"This is an opportunity for us to have a breakthrough season," Allen said. "It was a down program when we got here, and it has made significant progress."

UMES Routs Wesley in Exhibition Win

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Senior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and sophomore Chelsea
Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) scored 15 points each, including nine apiece in the second half, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team rolled to an exhibition victory over Division III Wesley, 87-51, in front of 1,469 at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The pair were two of four players to score in double figures in the win. Juniors Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) and Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) also had 11 and 10, respectively, while the UMES defense forced 33 turnovers and grabbed 23 steals.

UMES Lady Hawks Fall; Finish 5th in NCAA Bowling Championship

NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J.—Some things just aren't meant to be. With a team that has no seniors, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) will try again next year to claim their second NCAA Championship. They bowed out early, falling to New Jersey City University 4-1, and finishing tied for fifth in the nation. "We always come in with the expectation of winning," said Sharon Brummell, UMES head coach. "I think we got a fresh start this morning after a rough day yesterday. We played well under pressure in our win over Vanderbilt but we made a lot of mistakes and I think the team that makes the least mistakes on this shot will be the winner."

Mistakes may be an understatement, the Lady Hawks (103-37) left 15 open frames in their five games against NJCU (78-45), 10 of which were splits. "We couldn't get Paula going," said Brummell of sophomore All-American Paula Vilas. "She is the key to our engine, she starts us up. She wanted it so bad but as the lead-off we need her to strike and we just couldn't get her, or anyone for that matter, adjusted to the pattern." The pattern, Brummell speaks of, is how the oil is laid on the lanes.

Maryland - Eastern Shore's Coach Brummell named to NCAA Bowling Committee

Maryland-Eastern Shore head women's bowling coach Sharon Brummell was named to the NCAA's Women's Bowling Committee Thursday. She will serve a four-year term beginning September 1, the NCAA said. Brummell, who has coached at UMES for 12 years and led the school to the 2008 national championship, will replace Tara Wuorinen from St. Peter's College at the Division I representative. She will join Dean Lee (AD at Arkansas State), Jeff McCorvey (head coach, Alabama A&M), Bob Cincotta (head coach, Adelphi) and a representative who will replace outgoing member Frank Parisi, head coach of New Jersey City.

Brummell will be the only woman on the committee, at least until 2011 when two more vacancies open up. As part of the committee, Brummell will serve as regional chairperson, serve on the national committee, serve as an NCAA representative at the NCAA Bowling Championship and participate in the annual committee meeting.

North Carolina A&T women now 10-0 in MEAC

Lady Aggies Coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs has A&T rolling with a 10-0 MEAC record.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Senior guard Tu'Wuana "Tweet" Cook scored 22 points and N.C. A&T forced 26 turnovers as the Aggies routed Maryland-Eastern Shore 76-46 on Monday night in women's basketball at the Corbett Center. It was the 10th consecutive win for the Aggies (16-7, 10-0 MEAC), who held the Hawks to 30 percent field-goal shooting. Lamona Smalley, the MEAC's player of the week, had 18 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Jaleesa Sams added 11 points off the bench for A&T.

The Aggies went up 9-1 on a 3-point play by JaQuayla Berry at the 15:16 mark. Cook then hit consecutive 3-pointers to push the lead to 20-7 at 8:45. After a pair of Sams free throws, Cook knocked down her third 3 of the half to make it a 25-9 game and A&T never looked back again. April McBride led UMES (8-12, 5-5) with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Beast of the East: UMES, Great Expectations

After last season's 24-4 record, Hawks feeling confident

PRINCESS ANNE, MD -- With a new coach and numerous new players in the mix in 2007, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team came out and surprised a number of people with a 24-4 season, which included 22 consecutive match victories and a trip to the MEAC tournament title match against Florida A&M. This season, the Hawks were selected as the preseason pick to repeat as the conference's Northern Division champion, and they return nearly every starter from last year, leading to optimism heading into the '08 campaign.

"The first year I got hired, I knew I had a couple good recruits, but I didn't have any expectations," UMES second-year coach Don Metil said. "But going 10-and-oh in the conference last year, and having my five, six returners and being first in the preseason poll, there's a lot of expectations, not only intrasquad, but outside the UMES community. And I think that's why I've been really, really hard on the girls, because now we do have expectations and I think they're playing well, but I think there are still a lot of errors that need to be cleaned up."

UMES Hawks Bowling wins third MEAC Title

#2 UMES tops #11 Delaware State for 4-1 for their fourth overall championship.

HAMPTON, Va. - Two games. That is the amount of baker games the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) dropped during the entire Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship as they topped Delaware State University (DSU) 4-1 in the best of seven baker game format in Sunday's final to secure their third straight women's bowling title and fourth overall. The one game came to the nation's 11th ranked team, DSU in the finals, the other to Norfolk State University (NSU) in the semi-finals. They won every other match via shut out.

The Lady Hawks took on the Lady Hornets in the finals. DSU defeated NSU 4-1 in the semi-final round for the right to face UMES earlier in the day. The Hawks topped the Hornets 169-158, 175-181, 183-181, 153-151 and 190-169 to secure the title.

"It was how it was supposed to be," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "The two teams in the finals were the two teams ranked in the nation. Everything played out correctly and it was a competitive final."

North Carolina A&T flatten UMES Lady Hawks

Photo: Ta'Wuana Cook scored 28 points and 5 assists in leading six Aggies players in double figures. The 5-8 sophomore guard from Fayetteville, N.C. Seventy-First H.S. is our choice for Player of the Year in the MEAC.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina A&T women’s basketball team won again with a 105-79 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon at Irvin-Corbett Court.

Once again the Aggies looked dominant against a MEAC team in the top half of the standings. And once again, the Aggies made it difficult for a team to figure out which Aggie to slow down as they placed six players in double figures led Ta’Wuana Cook’s 28 points and five assists.

The Aggies (18-5, 11-0) played so well, even the normally hard-to-please head coach Patricia Cage-Bibbs hinted for the first time this season that the 2007-08 Aggies might be a pretty good team.

“I don’t think there is any question we are hard to defend,’’ said Bibbs. “Last year people felt like if they stopped Amber Bland we would struggle. But this year we have people who can score, people who can finish, people who can make things happen and I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Maryland-Eastern Shore scored the last six points to earn a 61-55 victory over Delaware State University in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's basketball Wednesday. Morton added two more free throws with 13 seconds left and Queenique Tyler hit one with one second remaining.

The Hawks won their school-record sixth straight to improve to 13-8, 6-2 in the MEAC.

UMES Lady Hawks outlasts Kent State in O.T.

Photo: #3 Kristi Veltkamp, 6-3 senior forward, Lansing Home School, Hudsonville, Michigan pulled down six rebounds against Kent State.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Tiffany Reid returned to action today against the Kent State University (KSU) Golden Flashes and poured in 19 points, on 7-15 shooting to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks to an overtime win, 76-71.

Reid, who had missed the last two games with a head injury sustained at Syracuse, looked to be her old self, knocking down two three pointers, going a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line and tallying three blocked shots and three assists for an overall solid performance.

"Effort overcame free throw shooting tonight," said Head Coach Fred Batchelor. "We missed some big ones but we kept pushing it and came away with the win." Ironically it was McBride, hurt in the overtime period, which made only one of two at the end of regulation with fewer than 10 seconds left that tied the game at 67 instead of giving the Hawks the lead. In the final three minutes Morton and Jessica Ayilola both missed two free throws that would have given UMES a lead.
