Alabama A&M's Tompkins resigns as Head Baseball Coach

HEAD COACH MICHAEL TOMPKINS
NORMAL, Alabama --  Second year head baseball coach Michael Tompkins has decided to resign to pursue other interest.

"I will be forever grateful for the opportunity that I was given here on "The Hill" by Bryan Hicks and the administration," said Tompkins. "I want to thank all of the players for all of the hard work that they put in and I wish them all of the best in their future endeavors."

"I will be pursuing a business opportunity in my home state of Washington with my wife Becky and be around family as we welcome our daughter Bailee next month. This was not an easy decision to make but a decision based on the well-being of my family."

In two years the youngest head coach in America improved the facilities at Bulldog baseball field adding a maroon wooden fence, railings in front of the dugouts, a covered hitting cage for the players and fencing around the home dugout area.

"I would like to thank Coach Michael Tompkins for his outstanding contributions to our baseball program," Director of Athletics Bryan Hicks mentioned. "We wish him and his family much success in his future endeavors."

Tennessee State picked third in OVC; QB still suspended

NASHVILLE, Tennessee  --  Tennessee State was picked to finish third Monday at Ohio Valley Conference Football Media Day, and Mike German was listed as the Tigers starting quarterback.

As coach Rod Reed enters his fourth season he’s looking at both as nothing more than projections.

“Mike German is listed as the starter on paper and we’re ranked No. 3 on paper,” Reed said. “But that paper doesn’t mean anything.”

German’s status is still in limbo two weeks before the start of practice. He was suspended in March after being charged with felony vandalism. Reed said German and defensive back Joseph Johnson were charged with doing several thousand dollars worth of damage to a 2011 Ford Fiesta by dancing on its roof.

Johnson is no longer on the roster.

FCS Executive Director of the Sports Network, discusses the state of FCS football and the OVC

NASHVILLE, Tennessee  --  Craig Haley, the FCS Executive Director of the Sports Network, discusses the state of FCS football and the OVC at the OVC Football Media Day on July 22.

TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY
Fourth-year head coach Rod Reed has helped his alma mater improve in each of his first three seasons at Tennessee State.

Last year the Tigers started the season 7-0 and rose to as high as 17th in the national rankings before losing an overtime game at Jacksonville State. The team finished the season 8-3 overall, marking just the third eight-win campaign for the program over the last 13 years.

Reed, a linebacker while playing at TSU, will have another strong defensive unit this season after his team led the OVC in total defense (361.64 yards/game) last year. All 11 starters return from last season including Preseason OVC Defensive Player of the Year Steven Godbolt III. The junior cornerback ranked first nationally in interceptions/game (0.60), hauling in six picks to go along with 45 tackles, six pass breakups and two forced fumbles in 10 games last year.

Three other TSU defensive players were named preseason All-OVC, including senior lineman Antonio Harper, junior linebacker Nick Thrasher and junior defensive back Daniel Fitzpatrick. Thrasher led the team in tackles (105) and tackles-for-loss (9.0) last season while Harper was second in sacks (3.5) and Fitzpatrick was first in pass breakups (8) and second in tackles (61). Among the returning offensive players is All-American tight end A.C. Leonard, who had 51 catches for 733 yards last season, and preseason All-OVC offensive linemen Demetrius Rhaney and Kadeem Edwards.

Preseason Q&A with SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama  --  I got the chance to sit down with Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Duer Sharp earlier this week. Check out what he had to say about moving the SWAC football championship from Birmingham to Houston, the state of the league and what he thinks the next step for the SWAC is in this Q&A.

Obviously, the big news was you guys moving the (conference championship) football game to Houston. But my question is, 'Because you've got the Magic City Classic here, which is the biggest game in all of black college football, did it make sense to try to expand the brand elsewhere since you've already got that game that's such a huge draw (in Birmingham)?

Sharp: "Well, you have brand in Houston too because we have ...

CIAA South has some questions

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina  --  CIAA football is right around the corner.

The league’s coaches and players will gather on July 25 at Winston-Salem State for the annual preseason media day. While a good bit of the discussion will center on who has what, the consensus is likely that Winston-Salem State is the team to beat on a conference and national level. The Rams, who open the season on Sept. 5 with a nationally televised game at UNC-Pembroke, are going for their third straight CIAA championship. As a result, the South Division has not only the league’s best team but the most intrigue. Here’s an overview of its programs and the question that has to be answered for a successful season:

Hampton Pirates tabs Ferebee as offensive coordinator

HAMPTON, Virginia  --  Glen Ferebee loved coaching football and was obviously successful, but as a substitute teacher at Lakeland High supplemented only by a coaching stipend the past two years, he wondered if he would have to give up the profession in order to support his family.

Hampton University's Donovan Rose took notice of Lakeland's back-to-back playoff seasons under Ferebee in 2011 and '12 and hired him last winter as quarterbacks coach as part of a staff shakeup. Six months later, the 35-year-old Virginia Beach native is running the Pirates' offense.

"This was something I always wanted to do," Ferebee said Tuesday. "I enjoyed coaching high school, but I wanted to get to the next level and I appreciate Coach Rose giving me the opportunity. I didn't think I'd become an offensive coordinator this quickly, but I'm going to work just as hard as I can."

All-star running back Paul Robertson possible impact freshman at Hampton University

HAMPTON, Virginia -- Hampton University's three returning tailbacks rushed for a combined 307 yards on 69 carries last season. Paul Robertson ran 32 times for 426 yards in one game.

Now there's no overstating the jump from high school to college football, but those jarring numbers illustrate the impact Robertson could have as a true freshman at Hampton this year after a breakout 2012 at L.C. Bird High School near Richmond.

"Paul has a great opportunity," Pirates coach Donovan Rose said. "It's a matter of who comes in and is ready to go. We don't start practice until July 31. I can tell you a little more once I see him in a Hampton uniform."

Fans can catch Robertson in uniform ...

Paul Robertson (5-10/190) rushed for 2,935 yards (14 games) for undefeated L.C. Bird High School, Richmond during the 2012 season, winning Virginia's Division 6 (highest classification) State Championship.  Robertson was named player of the year by the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Kentucky transfer running back likes what he sees in S.C. State football

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina  --  The University of Kentucky transfer, who has four years of eligibility, is determined to do what’s necessary to make an immediate impact with the Bulldogs.

“Versatile and a lead back,” said Taylor about his role. “I’m here to get it. They know I’m here to get it and I’m here to help this team win.”

WATCH IN 720p HD

Before stepping foot in Orangeburg, the 5-10, 208-pound Atlanta native made it clear he would do more than lead by example. With last year’s leading rusher Jalen “Scoot” Simmons out following shoulder surgery and joining a team that had its worst showing under head coach Buddy Pough, Taylor has looked to inspire his fellow Bulldogs during summer workouts.

“So far, I’ve been in the weight room grinding with my team,” he said. “I give words of wisdom after we’re done working out. I tell them that I’m here for them. Whatever they need, I’ve got it for them. We’ve just been putting in the work together. I’ve been showing them that I’m here to help them.”

Long, WSSU signee, excelling in summer-league basketball

LEWISVILLE, North Carolina - Nate Long, an incoming freshman at Winston-Salem State, is getting a crash course on playing college basketball.

“It’s more physical than in high school, and there’s a lot of quickness out here,” said Long, a 6-5 wing player from Mount Tabor High School who is playing in the Triad Pro-Am League at Forsyth Country Day for the first time. “I realize what I have to work on if I want to be a successful at the next level.”

Long could get away with a lot in high-school basketball — he usually could bail himself out with his athleticism if he got in trouble. In college, even at the Division II level, he’ll need to be more disciplined.

Alabama State football: ASU's Jones boasts plenty of SWAC rivals

MONTGOMERY, Alabama  --  Some players arrive at Alabama State knowing little about the tradition, having to learn from older players about the rivalries in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Carlton Jones knows them all first hand.

All he needs for a refresher course is a trip home for a family gathering over the holidays.

“I have a sister that goes to Jackson State, an older brother that just graduated from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a cousin that plays basketball at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and another cousin that plays baseball at Southern,” said Jones, the senior defensive end. “Everybody is my rival. If we go to Louisiana, we have to beat (Southern and Grambling). Pine Bluff, I have to beat them. Jackson State, that’s a must.”

It’s bad enough twin sister Calandra is a student at Jackson State.

This is a tremendous opportunity for our student-athletes, our alumni and fans to take part in one of the nation's top Classics. Playing in MetLife Stadium will be an incredible experience for our student-athletes, something they will remember for the rest of their lives. We are excited and honored to be a part of this year's Classic.

"NYUL Football Chair Anwar Ismael encouraged New Yorkers from every HBCU to be part of this unique east coast tradition, "Whatever school you graduated from, we're bringing HOMECOMING WEEKEND to you at MetLife Stadium. Grab your family, your friends, your frat, your sorors, your congregation and fire up the grill—But first get your ticket! About the New York Urban League
The New York Urban League (NYUL) has been part of the national network of Urban Leagues since 1919.  The mission of the NYUL is to enable African Americans and other underserved ethnic communities to secure a first class education, economic self-reliance, and equal respect of their civil rights through programs, services and advocacy in our highly diversified city.  Over its 93 year history, the NYUL has been at the forefront of change, from leading efforts to creating a public school system in New York, to developing street academies that served nearly 2,000 young people, to advocating on behalf of workers who found themselves unemployed due to egregious acts of discrimination and a slow job market. The League has built a legacy and continues its service along that path today.

Headquartered in Harlem, the New York Urban League serves Manhattan, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Queens, and the Bronx. Our current service areas are Employment and Education Services and advocacy on behalf of these two areas.

Would he deliver messages that would be inspirational but also realistic?
