Wiley College Wildcats (Texas) Wins First National Championship

Men's OTF Championship.jpgGULF SHORES, Alabama -- In 2012, Wiley College was given 20 scholarships to recruit in Trinidad and Tobago to help build a national championship contending track and field team. Those student-athletes set the foundation for the 2018 Wildcats to dominate their way to the first NAIA Track & Field Title in program history Saturday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium.
"This was three years in the making," said head coach Marlon Baugh, who won NAIA Men's Coach of the Year. "It started with Dan-Neil Telesford, Quinn-Lee Ralph, Justin Maloney and Moriba Morain. I'm proud of how our men performed. They executed."
The national title is the first in Wiley College athletic history and the first for a Red River Athletic Conference school in track & field. The Wildcats won six events and scored 92 points – which was 30 points ahead of Indiana Tech – which finished runner-up for the second consecutive year. Wiley College's point total is the highest since 2014. It is the first Historically Black College & University to win the national title since 1993 when Central State (Ohio) won. Eight Wildcats earned NAIA All-American.
Oraine Palmer (JR/Kingston, Jamaica) won the 100-meter dash (10.35), 200-meter dash (20.77) and ran on the champion 4 x 100-meter relay team with Fabian Hewitt (SO/Jamaica), Kimorie Shearman (SO/St. Vincent) and LaFranz Campbell (FR/Kingston, Jamaica). Palmer was named co-Most Valuable Performer – sharing the award with Goabaone Moshelekti of Lindsey Wilson Kentucky and Geoffrey Kipchumba of William Carey.
"I'm elated," Palmer said. "It's great being able to come up here and win a national title. I worked hard all year. This wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for God."
After running the anchor in the 4 x 100-meter relay, Campbell won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.98. He capped off his freshman season by being named Most Outstanding Performer.
"It feels great," Campbell said. "It took a lot of hard work and training. Now, I'm going to work on myself more and come back and do something bigger next season."
Rajay Hamilton (SR/Jamaica) sped past Wayland Baptist's Quintaveon Poole – who had the fastest qualifying time to win the 400-meter dash (46.07). It was the second straight season a Wiley College runner won the event.
The Wildcats finished the day with Kimorie ShearmanJamoul Pierre (JR/Trinidad and Tobago), Marbeq Edgar (SR/Choiseul, St. Lucia) and Rajay Hamilton winning the 4 x 400-meter relay in 3:09.11. The Wildcats six titles give them 13 in program history.
Hewitt delivered NAIA All-American runs in the 100-meter dash (10.41) and the 200-meter dash (21.13) – finishing behind his teammate Palmer. Shearman earned NAIA All-American in the 200-meter dash (22.11) and 400-meter dash (47.00). Edgar (1:51.05) and Shevan Parks (SO/Jamaica) (1:52.04) earned NAIA All-American in the 800-meter run.
Edgar, Hamilton, Leonard Kiprono (SR/Chepkorio, Kenya), Kendell Perouza (SR/Barataria, Trinidad and Tobago) and Darion De La Rosa (SR/Freeport, Trinidad) depart. With Campbell, Pierre and Parks potentially returning, the Wildcats will look to add pieces for a repeat bid in 2019.

Cauldwell also was the national champion of the triple jump, where she posted the event's longest distance of 13.16m, and was the national runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.23m.

RESULTS

Ambersley had another third-place finish, as she timed in at 53.18 to post an All-American performance in the 400m. Rounding out the scoring for LU was Medley, who became the national runner-up in the 100m by timing in at 11.50.

This is the eighth national championship that Lincoln has won in women's outdoor track & field, following titles in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2014. It's also the 13th overall championship for the Lincoln women, who won indoor national titles in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2016.

Kalawan Wins Three National Titles, Leads SAU Women To National Runner-Up Track & Field Finish

Lady Falcons National Runner-Ups 2018CHARLOTTE, North Carolina --  Shannon Kalawan put on a show at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

The Saint Augustine's University sophomore ran away with national titles in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay at the Irwin Belk Complex. Her performance led to a national runner-up finish for the Lady Falcons.

In the men's division, the Falcons relied on sprinter Brandon-Valentine Parris (Jr./St. Vincent) and javelin thrower Najair Jackson (Fr./Spanish Town, Jamaica) to place fourth in the nation. Both the SAU men's and women's squads received team trophies for finishing among the top four teams in their respective divisions. The Falcons came in the championship meet ranked seventh and the Lady Falcons ranked fourth.

Both teams placed high in the standings despite bringing small contingents to the championship meet, which was held on the Johnson C. Smith University campus. Eight men and five women qualified for the Falcons and Lady Falcons, respectively.

"I thought we performed well," said legendary SAU Head Coach George Williams, whose men's teams had captured the previous five national titles. "We just ran out of bodies."

Women's champion Lincoln (Mo.) University scored 60 points followed by the Lady Falcons with 48.5 points and Angelo State University with 42.5 points. Texas A&M University-Kingsville won the men's title with 65 points followed by Ashland University with 51 points, Tiffin University with 50 points and the Falcons with 42 points.

Kalawan scored nearly half (23.25) of the Lady Falcons' points in convincing fashion. She was dominant at the meet, pulling away from competitors early in races. A Westmoreland, Jamaica, native, Kalawan appeared to be running by herself after making the final turn toward the finish line.

"Shannon is an athlete," Williams said. "You won't find a runner like her."

Kalawan placed first and Amanda Crawford (So./Brooklyn, NY) finished second in the 400 dash to put the Lady Falcons in contention. The Lady Falcons climbed to third in the team standings after the pair scored 18 points in the 400. Kalawan ran a personal-best 52.05 seconds in the race.

The Lady Falcons moved to second place after Kalawan won the 400 hurdles in 57.27 seconds. Lincoln clinched the title before the 4x400 relay, but the Lady Falcons squad of Ade Hunter (Sr./Philadelphia, PA), Crawford, Leah Barker (Sr./St. Michaels, Barbados) and Kalawan ended the meet in style. With Kalawan as the anchor, the foursome cemented second place in the women's division with the victory.

"I was really nervous coming into this championship," said Kalawan, the top-ranked 400 sprinter and 400 hurdler entering the meet. "I was struggling with a little hamstring problem but I am proud of myself, my teammates and my coach for pushing me."

Kalawan and her 4x400 teammates were among several Falcons and Lady Falcons earning All-America status on Saturday. The top eight finishers in each event gained All-America honors.

Valentine-Parris placed third in the men's 400 dash and fourth in the men's 200 dash, and Jackson finished second in the men's javelin throw. Jackson threw a season-best 234-9 on his first attempt.

The men's 4x400 unit of Evans, Shaquille Dill (Jr./Pembroke, Bermuda), Kimmons and Valentine-Parris placed second, and the women's 4x100 group of Kalawan, Barker, Hunter and Crawford was sixth. The men's 4x100 relay team of Damere Gilbert (So./Sharon Hill, PA), Adrian Kimmons (Sr./Cold Water, MS), Dontarian Evans (Jr./Gainesville, FL) and Valentine-Parris placed fourth.

Justin Williams (So./Brooklyn, NY) deserves mention for his triple jump performance. He placed 10th in the event after being a late entry in the event.

NAIA Track & Field Championships: Dillard Bleu Devil Shepherd Runs Fastest Wind Legal 100m of the Season

GULF SHORES, Alabama -- Darrien Shepherd wrapped up his sophomore campaign Friday with his fastest 100-meter wind legal time of the season on day two of the 2018 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.

Shepherd placed sixth in his heat and 26th overall with a time of 10.88 seconds, marking the best legal time of his career.

"That was probably his best block start of the year," head coach Derek Gay said. "He didn't make finals, but it was the best wind legal race he has had all year."

The Winnfield, Louisiana, native got his first taste of the national meet and will have two more years at Dillard.

"We are super excited to have him for two more years," Gay said. "He still has so much room for improvement."

Jovan Roaches-Lambey will be the last Bleu Devil to compete as the final of the triple jump begins Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Los Angeles native won both the long and triple jump titles at the 2018 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in April.
