UDC Firebirds Soar Past Wilmington, 81-59

Women's Basketball vs. Wilmington University, 11/18/17WILMINGTON, Delaware – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team earned a decisive, 81-59 victory vs. Wilmington University Saturday afternoon in the Tip Off Classic, hosted by WU.

 The Firebirds, who bounced back nicely after a lopsided loss to Holy Family University in their season opener last night, improved to 1-1 on the season with today's 22-point victory. This marked the largest margin of victory for UDC since February 10th, 2016, when the Firebirds beat Dowling College, 86-50.

 The Wildcats, members of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, fell to 0-2 on the season.

 Senior guard Natasha Roy led the way for UDC with a terrific all-around performance. She packed the stat sheet with a team-high 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals.

 Meanwhile, guards Tyra Coombs and Etalyia Vogt added 11 points apiece, with Coombs also pulling in a team-best eight rebounds, and center Patricia Albert pitched in nine points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

 Wilmington also featured three scorers in double-figures, including a game-high 23-point scoring effort by Macy Robinson. Reserve Jaelyn Durrett scored 14 points in 28 minutes off the bench, and Nyree Grant added 10 points.

 UDC out-shot Wilmington 41-percent to 33-percent from the field, and the Firebirds nearly doubled-up the Wildcats in field goals made (30-17). District of Columbia had a 48-39 rebounding edge, and converted 25 offensive rebounds into 28 2nd chance points. The Firebirds were also opportunistic off of turnovers, turning 27 Wilmington miscues into 25 points off turnovers.

 The Firebirds, who trailed by as many as six points part-way through the 2nd quarter, also had the deeper bench today, more than doubling-up the Wildcats, 30-14 in bench points.

 The first quarter featured five ties and three lead changes as these two East Region foes were never separated by more than four points the entire opening period. Wilmington claimed an 18-16 advantage at the end of the quarter courtesy of a 6-0 run over the last two minutes of play.

 Albert opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter with a layup nearly a minute-and-a-half in, but Wilmington countered with back-to-back three-pointers to take a 24-18 lead at the 7:48 mark. UDC answered back by out-scoring WU 10-3 over the next 3:45, and the Firebirds re-claimed the lead, 28-27 on a layup by Mia-Alexis Lloyd. The lead switched hands twice more, but UDC ended the period on an 8-4 run and took a 37-32 lead into halftime.

 The Firebirds took control of the game in the 3rd quarter, out-scoring the Wildcats, 21-6 over a span of nearly seven minutes, catapulting them in front, 58-38 approaching the 3-minute mark in the period. They would end the quarter in front, comfortably, 63-45.

 UDC never let its lead dip below 18 points in the final period, even extending its lead to as many as 23 on a made free throw by Mia Boyd at the 2:48 mark. The Firebirds went on to win by a final score of 81-59.

 Next up, UDC will visit Lincoln (PA) on Wednesday, November 14th at 6 p.m.

Bowie State Bulldogs Football to Host West Alabama in NCAA Super Region 2 Playoff

CIAA Football ChampionshipINDIANAPOLIS, Indiana –The Bowie State University football team received official notification late Sunday (11/11) afternoon after hearing the Bulldogs named announced for a berth into the NCAA Division II Super Region 2 playoffs for the second consecutive season. The Bulldogs (9-2) will host its second straight home football playoff game and will face the Tigers of West Alabama University (8-3).

"It was a great accomplishment to win the CIAA Championship yesterday and put ourselves in position to host a D2 Region playoff again", said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson. Bowie State hosted Delta State in 2017, falling to the Delta State Statemen by a score of 45-35.
 
The top seed Valdosta State (10-0) will have a first-round bye. In other Super Region 2 matchups, #2 West Georgia (10-1) will host #7 Wingate and #3 Lenoir-Rhyne will host Florida Tech.
 
All games will be played on the host campus and will kickoff at 12 noon or a time selected by the host.

Langston Knocks Off Jarvis Christian 87-63

News PhotoLANGSTON, Oklahoma  – Led by a suffocating defense the Langston University women's basketball overwhelmed Jarvis Christian en route to a 87-63 victory on Saturday night at C.F. Gayles Field House.

Langston (2-1) built a 44-29 advantage at halftime before erupting in the third quarter to lead by 31 after Jhordyn Patton (SR/Edmond, Okla.) scored off a Bulldogs turnover and assist from Orionna Shirley (JR/Bellflower, Calif.). Langston pushed their lead to as much as 32 points after Shantrice Picking (SR/Houston, Texas) scored to open the fourth quarter to make it 75-43.

Offensively, the Lady Lions shot .444 percent from the field, converted 20-of-30 free throw attempts while forcing 29 turnovers. The Bulldogs finished at .348 percent on the night and only converted five-of-24 three-point attempts.

Akia Frett (SR/St. Thomas, V.I.) led a sextuple of double-digit scores with 15 points in 25 minutes of action. Jhordyn Patton finished with 14, Alexia Levenston (SO/Madisonville, Texas) and Kaylie Mitchell (FR/Shreveport, La.) both tallied 11 and Tennia Hill (SR/Victorville, Calif.) and Orionna Shirley pumped in 10 points apiece.

No. 9 Langston Draws No. 6 Kansas Wesleyan In NAIA Football Playoffs

News PhotoKANSAS CITY, Missouri  -- Two conference titles were up for grabs on Saturday, and Baker (Kan.) and Langston (Okla.) earned victories in a critical spot heading into the final rating of the 2018 NAIA Football regular season. With the two victories, both teams secured their conference automatic bid to the NAIA Football Championship Series.
The full field features 11 automatic qualifiers and five at-large berths. In order to qualify for an automatic bid, teams must win their conference regular season title and be ranked in the Top 20 in the final NAIA Coaches' Top 25 poll. You may access the final poll here. At-large berths were given to the next highest ranked teams that did not earn an automatic bid.

Shaw Wins 2018 CIAA Volleball Championship With 3-1 Win Over Virginia State

SALEM, Virginia -- The 2018 season has been unlike any other and on Saturday night that held to be true as the No. 1 seeded Shaw University women's volleyball team claimed the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with a 4-1 (17-25, 25-19, 25-19, 28-26) victory over No. 1 seeded Virginia State University at the Salem Civic Center to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior rightside hitter Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, US Virgin Islands) led the offensive attack with 16 kills and five blocks while senior middle hitter Saraya Klink (Fuquay-Varina, NC) finished with 12 kills, four blocks and three service aces. Senior setter Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 42 assists and six digs while senior libero Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) finished with 14 digs in the winning effort.

SHAW WINS 2018 CIAA VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 3-1 WIN OVER VIRGINIA STATEThe teams went back and forth in the first set, both suffering from a number of service errors throughout. The Trojans settled into pace first after tying with the Lady Bears 7-7, VSU then went on a five-point scoring streak by capitalizing on Shaw's errors. The Lady Bears (23-8) tried to slow the pace but the Trojan's continued to chip away and eventually swelled the score margin to 18-11.Five out of six of the Trojan's final points were ignited by the Lady Bears' dismay and the match was awarded to VSU, 25-17.

In a heated second set with a scoring margin of 12-10, the two teams entered a heated rally that was capped off by a kill by senior rightside hitter Jazmin Johnson-McCoy (Seattle, WA). Leaving the Trojans stunned, Wattley rounded out the set with two kills and a block for Shaw's first victory of the night, 25-19.

The Lady Bears continued their momentum in the third set as the team tacked on points four at a time. At 21-14 Shaw went on a run while the Trojans scrambled to take control and find a consistent rhythm. A kill which landed out the back side of the baseline gave the ball back to VSU just in time to hold the Lady Bears off from match point. Junior outside hitter Tyler Hunter (Atlanta, GA) took matters in to her own hands with a kill from the outside to seal the deal, 25-19.

The Trojans wouldn't let the Lady Bears take the crown without a fight and stayed close throughout the entire fourth set. After several lead changes, VSU established themselves for a series until committing several errors turned the lead over to the Lady Bears. As Shaw came up on the match point, VSU took a quick set, finding hole in between Shaw players. Tied at 25 and 26, the Trojans couldn't hang on long enough and fell by two set points, 28-26.

The Lady Bears finished the evening with 54 kills, 33 digs, and 8 blocks while the Trojans went for 52 kills, 27 digs, and 7 blocks. Wattley was named the 2018-CIAA Tournament MVP.

Klink, Sosa and Olmeda-Gonzalez were also selected to All-CIAA Tournament Team.

Tuskegee's Powell era begins with season opening win over Auburn-Montgomery


MONTEVALLO, Alabama -- Alexis Carter scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and the Tuskegee University women's basketball team cruised to a 62-50 win over Auburn University-Montgomery (AUM) Friday evening at the GSC/SIAC Challenge hosted by the University of Montevallo. The win marked the team's first season opening victory since the 2012-13 season. The two teams met twice last season splitting the series with a pair of wins.

TU jumped out to a 14-10 lead in the first quarter before things evened out with the two teams playing to a 28-25 halftime score in favor of the Golden Tigers. They were also tenacious defensively by forcing 17 Warhawk turnovers and allowing them shoot only 20 percent from three point range for the game.

Shelle Daniels came off of the bench to score 12 points and haul in six rebounds in 12 minutes of action. India Blakely was efficient in her debut in a Golden Tigers uniform. The Mercer transfer scored eight points, pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists with a turnover. Senior Jade Wilson returned to the floor for the first time since last January's injury to score seven points and nine rebounds.

The Golden Tigers score 18 points off of turnovers while also outscoring the Warhawks in the paint 26-10. AUM cut into Skegee's lead at 50-46 before the Golden Tigers went on a 12- 2 over the next three minutes to put the game away.

Tuskegee University Mourns The Loss Of Its Only MLB Draft Pick, Ken Howell


TUSKEGEE, Alabama -- Tuskegee University is mourning the loss of former Major League Baseball player and Golden Tiger, Ken Howell, who passed away at age 57. Howell played for the Golden Tigers from 1978-82 before getting selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 3rd round of the 1982 MLB Draft.

The Detroit, Michigan native made his Major League debut for the Dodgers on June 25, 1984 against the San Diego Padres, working a scoreless ninth inning. His first start was on July 3, 1984 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His first career win came in an extra innings game against the St. Louis Cardinals on July 6, 1984.

"We shared the same hometown and he meant a lot to me". Former NFL and TU standout Ken Woodard said. "We came to Skegee together in 1978 and left together in 1982 as professional draft picks in two different sports. His humbleness and desire for perfection is what separated him from most". Woodard stated.

Howell remained with the Dodgers through the 1988 season, appearing in 194 games, with four starts and 31 saves before getting traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. In 1989, he pitched in 33 games in which 32 were starts.

He returned to the Dodgers in 2003 as the pitching coach for the Vero Beach Dodgers in Class-A and was eventually promoted to pitching coach for the AA Jacksonville Suns in 2005 and AAA Las Vegas 51s from 2006-2007. In 2008, Howell joined the Dodgers Major League coaching staff as the bullpen coach, a position he held through 2012 under Managers Joe Torre and Don Mattingly. On November 13, 2012, he became the Assistant Pitching Coach for the Dodgers and remained in that position through the 2015 until complications from diabetes took on a bigger role in his life. He passed away in West Bloomfield, Mich., near his birthplace of Detroit.

Howell was known for both his passion on the mound and his tireless commitment to improving many other pitchers in the Dodgers' system. Multiple members of the Dodgers organization shared their reverence for Howell via Twitter. Former Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti offered praise for Howell, who was a pivotal figure in the development of Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen. "When we decided to turn a Minor League catcher named @kenleyjansen74 into a pitcher, Kenny played a major role. He 'heart' Dodgers; it was reciprocal," tweeted Colletti.

Josh Lindblom, who was drafted by the Dodgers in the second round in the 2008 Draft, reflected fondly of his former coach. "He is one of the most influential coaches I've had in my career," tweeted Lindblom. "He never stopped believing in his guys. He took a bunch of rookies in 2011 and made us big leaguers. Amazing man, coach, and friend."

Tuskegee Digital Network football play-by-play announcer Frank Lee noted that Howell played for former TU head baseball coach James "Big Jim" Martin who gave him the nickname "Hollywood".

Miles College Lady Bears open season with Wallace's 300th win

FAIRFIELD, Alabama -- Miles used a blistering fourth quarter run, erasing an 11-point lead and holding Mississippi College to just two buckets over the final five minutes, to earn a 73-68 win at Knox-Windham Gymnasium in the season opener for both teams.

Sakina Wynn scored 20 points and added four assists in her first game for the Lady Bears (1-0) and Jasmine Hollis and Taylor Terry each added 13 points in the win, which was the 300th in the coaching career of head coach Phillip Wallace, Jr. Mississippi college turned the ball over 28 times, which Miles turned into 31 points. More importantly, the Lady Bears shot 71 percent from the field over the final 10 minutes to race past the Choctaws.

In the first half, it was the Choctaws who could not miss. They shot almost 64 percent from the field and led 40-29 at the break. But Miles started turning up the pressure on defense and came smoking to start the third. After scoring the first eight points of the period and going on a 14-2 run, the Lady Bears had forged a 43-42 advantage less than five minutes into the second half.

But the Choctaws had an immediate answer, taking advantage of several Miles miscues to get some easy buckets. The Lady Bears would scored just two free throws the rest of the quarter and Mississippi College quickly reopened its 11-point leaded headed into the fourth quarter. Miles still trailed by 10 points with less than seven minutes left, but the Choctaws could not handle the Lady Bears pressure. Mississippi College went 2-for-7 from the field and made nine turnovers over the final 6:30 A layup by Najla Shamsid-Deen (eight points, four steals) with 51 seconds left cut the deficit to a single point before Hollis, Terry and Winn knocked down all six of their free throws to take the lead and salt the game.

Zariah Matthews and Zan Ratcliffe each had 14 points for Mississippi College. Raiana Johnson came off the bench to score eight points for Miles, which hosts Shorter on Tuesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

 In a fast paced game, the SU Tigers used a continuous rotation of subs on their way to building a 26-18 lead by the end of the first quarter.

 Sparked by baskets from Brooke Spaulding and Takyra Gilbert, CSU responded with a 13-2 run to begin the second period. The teams traded baskets in the final three minutes of the first half. A putback by SU's Taelor Carter as time expired made the score 42-40 in favor of the Lady Marauders at the break.

 CSU opened the second half on a 10-1 run. A Falon Edwards basket gave the Lady Marauders a 52-41 lead at the 6:16 mark of the third quarter. From that point on, CSU maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

 Up 64-51 heading into the fourth quarter, newcomer Aaryn Evans emerged for CSU with six points and the CSU shooters converted five of five free throws while cruising to the 16-point victory.

 CSU forced SU into 35 combined turnovers. CSU converted 26 points of tunovers to SU's eight points.

 Five CSU players scored in double-figures on Saturday. Gilbert finished with a game-high 22 points along with nine assists, 5 rebounds, and three steals. Chervelle Cox recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. The 6'1 forward also dished out four assists. Jaeda Davis had 15 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Spaulding managed 12 points on the night while battling through foul trouble and Evans finished with 11 points.

 The Lady Marauders will return to their home floor tomorrow against rival Wilberforce University in the final game of the Theresa A. Check Tip-Off Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 4 pm.

Notes
CSU's 86 points is the most the team has scored since a Jan. 4 win over Paine last season.

 Among the nation's best in steals last season, CSU recorded 18 steals on Saturday compared to SU's total of three.

 CSU's Takyra Gilbert made her first appearance since suffering a season-ending injury on Dev. 16, 2017.

 Chervelle Cox set her new collegiate career-high with 16 points on Saturday.

 With Saturday's win, CSU avenged last year's loss to Salem to start the 2017-18 season.

 Aaryn Evans, who played at nearby Sinclair Community College, scored 11 points in her CSU debut.

Southern Jaguars Dominates Arkansas Pine Bluff, 56-24

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana --  Southern University's 'Dog Day' defense made a statement early to dominate the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 56-24 at A.W. Mumford Stadium Saturday evening, pushing their winning streak to four games.

Southern (5-1 SWAC, 6-3 Overall) pounced on UAPB on the first play of the game when Timothy Thomas intercepted a jump ball thrown by UAPB's Skyler Perry, which set up the Jaguars at their own 46-yard line.

Southern marched down the field on a 6-play, 54-yard drive capped by Jamarqueza Mims' five-yard touchdown.

Southern's special team came up with the next big play forcing a UAPB fumble which was recovered by Ceasar Barajas on the ensuing kickoff.

Southern only needed a one play drive to hit pay dirt, capped by Ladarius Skelton's 28-yard toss to Randall Menard making it his first touchdown catch of the 2018-19 season.

UAPB got on the board on Perry's 8-yard pitch and catch to Dejuan Miller to cut the lead to 14-6.

Skelton continued to light up the scoreboard, responding with a 57-yard touchdown to Menard and a 45-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Register to extend the lead 28-6.

Devon Benn scored Southern's next touchdown on a 1-yard scamper after Jeremias Houston's 74-yard reception giving the Jaguars a 35-9 lead.

Skelton closed the half with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Trey Smith to take a 42-9 lead into intermission.

Southern has outscored their opponents 101-9 in the first half dating back to the Prairie View A&M game on October 13.

Skelton recorded a career night passing the rock, completing 12 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

John Lampley replaced Skelton in the second half, completing all his passes (4) while adding a 20-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Catalon to open the second half.

UAPB used a 12-play 71-yard drive to add a touchdown, to cut the lead, 49-17.

Southern Christopher Chaney added another big play, a 43-yard rush up the sideline to end the scoring for the Jaguars extending the lead to 56-17.

UAPB ended the scoring with a 17-play, 81-yard drive to end the game 56-24.

Both Southern and Grambling will have their eyes locked on next Saturday's Jackson State-Alcorn State finale which will decide the SWAC Eastern division and determine who will host the 2018 SWAC Football Championship on December 1.

Howard Volleyball Has 3-0 Win Over Norfolk State on Senior Night


WASHINGTON, D.C.  – It was senior night at Howard University as the Bison volleyball team ended its regular season on a high note Friday in Burr Gymnasium. The Bison defeated the Norfolk State Spartans (4-18, 3-7 MEAC) in three sets, 25-11, 25-16, 25-19 to improve to 17-10 overall and 9-1 in the MEAC. Seniors Courtney Dalton, Tamia Dockery and Olubunmi Okunade were honored. The three seniors have been MEAC Champions each of their collegiate years.

Set one was all Howard's as they hit the floor on a 5-0 run and ended the set with six unanswered points, 25-11.

In set two the Spartans were on the board first. The Bison, however had another high scoring run pushing the score to 7-1 early. The Spartans kept up the fight. Howard was up 15-7 when attack errors gave Norfolk four of six points to bring the Spartans within three, 15-12. Their efforts fell short. The Bison took set two, 25-16.

Set three was a competitive showing between the two teams. The Spartans saw an 8-7 lead and kept the game close. It was a tie at 10-10 before the Bison pulled away without looking back. Howard won the third set and ended the game, 25-19.

Jurnee Tipton led the Bison with 18 kills, four digs and an ace. Kira Porter totaled eight kills, two blocks, and an ace. Libero Fola Wilson had four aces, four assists and three digs. Tamia Dockery tallied 32 assists, seven digs, a kill and an ace.

The highlight of the night was anticipating the milestones that Dockery is on pace to make. She went into the game with 984 digs, just 16 shy of 1,000. In Friday's game she had seven digs. Dockery ranks ninth on Howard's all-time digs list. She holds Howard's record for assists. The Bison volleyball team is looking forward to Dockery accomplishing the 1,000-digs feat next weekend. Howard will host the MEAC tournament on its home court in Burr Gym. As the number one Northern MEAC team, the Bison are seeking their fourth consecutive MEAC title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Howard Women’s Soccer 11 Game Winning Streak Comes to an End in NCAA Tournament

CARY, North Carolina -- Howard women's soccer (13-7-2) saw its 11 game winning streak come to an end today. The Bison fell to the University of North Carolina (UNC) Tar Heels (18-3-1) in the 2018 NCAA Soccer Tournament.



The Bison had difficulty taking shots and getting to the goal. In the first half UNC was able to find the net at the 17th, 35th and 44th minute marks. The 3-0 lead was insurmountable. When Howard returned in the second half they still did not have an answer for UNC's defense which held them to just one shot while UNC took 26 shots. The lone Bison shot taken was by freshman Jordan Taylor. Taylor is the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Freshman of the Year.

UNC Had eight corner kicks while Howard had zero. Goalkeeper Alayah Hightower had seven saves, keeping the Tar Heels from widening the lead. UNC's Bridgette Andrzejewski had two goals. Tar Heel teammates Julia Ashley and Rachel Dorward both made goals. The quick, aggressive play on offense and defense led the Tar Heels to a 4-0 win.

The 2018 season was outstanding despite the tournament loss. Head coach Brent Leiba continues to make historic strides for Howard. In 2015 the Bison made their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Howard will lose a large number of seniors this year. Many of which have played since their 2015 freshmen season - Makela Davidson, Mackenzie Diotte, Dionne Bailey, Jasmin Miller, Marley Christian, Kendall Hamilton and Zakiya Muhammad, Whitney White. The underclassmen returning for the Bison are expected to continue the excellence of Leiba's program.

FAMU Rattler Cagers Surge Past Tuskegee, 62-55

FAMU AthleticsTALLAHASSEE, Florida – The FAMU Men’s Basketball team improved to 2-0 Saturday afternoon with a 62-55 win over Tuskegee (Ala.) University at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU bolted out of the gates, rolling to a 14-point lead, 27-13 on a Justin Ravenel fast break slam dunk with 8:50 left in the first half.

But the Golden Tigers went on a 16-2 surge late in the half to tie the game at 29-29 on a pair of Daniel Roach free throws with 1:07 left, before Ravenel splashed a three-pointer with 47 seconds left to put FAMU ahead, 32-29.

TU’s Kaleb Morton answered with a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to tie the game, 32-32 at halftime.

The second half started out as a tight battle with four tied scores, and five lead changes, until newcomer M.J. Randolph’s jumper with 13:47 left put FAMU ahead for good at 42-40.

A three-pointer by Ravenel 9:30 left put FAMU ahead by double digits at 54-44, and a Kamron Reaves jumper extended the Rattler lead to 12 points, 56-44 with 7:23 left.

Tuskegee did make one final run at the Rattlers, closing to within five points at 50-55 with under a minute left on a pair of Myles Thomas free throws at the 52-second mark.

Kamron Reaves made the final margin seven points, 62-55, when he hit a pair of charity shots with eight seconds left.

Justin Ravenel hit his jersey number, 21 Saturday, scoring 21 points of 7-of-8 shooting, including 5-of-6 from distance. Kamron Reaves added 11 points and Tracy Hector hit 10 points for FAMU.

Daniel Roach led the Golden Tigers with 18 points, while Cam Grepke added 11 points for Tuskegee.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rattlers head to Jamaica for the Jamaica Classic on Montego Bay, this Friday through Sunday, opening a six-game road trip.

Friday, FAMU opens against Campbell University, and Sunday, they will face off against Central Connecticut State.

City rival Loyola holds on to defeat Gold Rush

NEW ORLEANS — City rival Loyola continued its season-long parade to the foul line, making 28-of-40 Saturday to defeat NAIA No. 23 Xavier University of Louisiana 87-78 at The Den.
    
 The loss was the first of the season for the XULA men (4-1), who will visit second-ranked LSU-Alexandria at 7 p.m. Monday.
     
Terry Smith scored 23 points, Cameron Dumas 20, and Zach Wrightsil 15 for Loyola (3-2), which made 17-of-25 free throws in the second half. Through five games the Wolf Pack has attempted 206 free throws.

Nuggets get 1st loss after double-digit lead at OLLU

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Kasey Saldana and Patience Okpe led a second-half rally Saturday that gave NAIA No. 15 Our Lady of the Lake an 89-74 women's basketball victory against Xavier University of Louisiana.
     
The Saints (2-0) trailed 48-36 at halftime and 59-39 late in the third quarter, then seized momentum with 12 consecutive points to open the final period.     

Saldana scored 25 points, 13 in the second half, and Okpe finished with 16, 14 in the second half. Okpe was 6-of-6 from the floor after halftime.
     
Jas Hill scored all 16 of her points in the first half for the Gold Nuggets (4-1), and Maya Trench and Kyla Duncan scored 13 apiece. Hill grabbed six rebounds, and Trench had five assists.
     
XULA led by 15 twice in the second quarter, the second time on a Shaelyn Johnson basket at 7:54. OLLU took its first lead at 8:56 of the fourth quarter on Brianna Henson's basket.
     
The Gold Nuggets shot 20.7 percent from the floor in the second half and made one of their last 14 shots. XULA made no second-half 3-pointers after making seven in the first half.
     
OLLU was plus-8 in turnovers and had a 31-9 advantage in points off of turnovers.
     
XULA's next game will start at 5 p.m. Monday at LSU-Alexandria.
