A&T Volleyball Adds Two Versatile Talents for 2019
They are bringing in reinforcements to make this historic occurrence happen. Head coach Hal Clifton announced two signees on Friday in Carolina Miranda-Suarez (5-foot-10, outside hitter, Guamani Private School, Borinquen Coqui Volleyball Club, Aguirre, Puerto Rico) and Addy Warfield (5-8, setter, Winter Springs High School, Florida-Orlando Volleyball Academy, Winter Springs, Fla.).
Miranda-Suarez and Warfield will join a team that loses only one senior in junior college transfer setter Megan Wiggins. They are expected to join a team with three seniors, four juniors and six sophomores.
Miranda-Suarez was the MVP of the 2015 Guamani Private School tournament. She was a National Honor Society student from 2016-18. As a club member of Borinquen Coqui Volleyball Club, she helped them win the Spring Power League Jeep Volleyball Challenge championship. They finished second in their division in the Capital Hill Philadelphia Qualifier. They finished third in The City of Las Challenge AAU.
Miranda-Suarez will bring another versatile player to AggieLand who can play back row and at the net.
“Carolina is a very smooth outside hitter that can play all six rotations,” said Clifton. “She sees the court well and is able to attack line, angle and seam and can do so with power when she needs it or finesse when it requires it. She is a solid passer and defender. Her ball control and defense will make a huge impact on our team.”Volleyball Adds Two Versatile Talents for 2019 https://t.co/76V3zPqx4e— N.C. A&T Athletics (@NCATAGGIES) November 24, 2018
Warfield will serve as Wiggins’ replacement. She will also provide versatility for the Aggies. She can provide the Aggies not only someone who can get the volleyball to the Aggies talented hitters but can also help defend from the back row and score at the net.
“Addy is unassuming as a volleyball player but don’t let that fool you. She is extremely talented and has grown up playing volleyball,” said Clifton. “She is a coach’s kid that just understands the game at a different level. She is accurate with her sets and knows how to put her hitters into positions to score. Addy is a game and competes hard, which is something we love about her. She will continue to raise the level of play in our gym.”
The Aggies are coming off a 14-12 season. It is their first better than .500 season in 12 years. In the process, the Aggies reached their first MEAC tournament championship game in 13 years. They are expected to return first-team All-MEAC outside hitter Courteney Pitt, All-MEAC rookie libero Andrea Laboy-Rivera and versatile talent Edie Brewer.

PVAMU Football De-Claws the Tigers Wrapping Up the 2018 Season
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- The Prairie View A&M football team defeated Texas Southern 60-14, in their final game of the season at Panther Stadium on Saturday.#PVMUFootball for the WIN!! https://t.co/OnxzRryE0u— PVAMU Panthers (@PVAMUPanthers) November 24, 2018
Seniors Jontre Epps, Quinton Bell, Issac Claiborne, TyQuan Fields, Nathan Foreman, Zach Collins, Jamal Fontenot, Willie Green, Cedric Porter, Aaron Townsend, Markus Hardy, Will Skinner, Anthony Stubbs, Damond Jackson, D'Marcus Moon and Steven Guillory were all honored at the beginning of their final collegiate game as a Panther
The seniors that played their final minutes gave their last game of the season a different and more special meaning.
Head coach Eric Dooley said the win, and great showing from the defense in particular, both came down to the team-oriented playing style shown by players.
"It was a team thing," he said. "We had a lot of seniors on defense. Those guys played for one another, as they have all year long. We came out on top this year, that's why there's more smiles."
The teams traded scores in the first quarter. The Panthers (5-6) got on the board first after a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Jalen Morton, giving them the early 7-0 lead. Morton accounted for both touchdowns in the first quarter, after another 9-yard rush touchdown with under six minutes remaining. PVAMU went into the second quarter leading 13-7 over the Tigers.
The Panther's controlled the game throughout the second quarter. After a 66-yard rush, Morton gave the team a 20-7 lead with 12:39 left in the period. Caleb Broach also contributed to the dominating quarter with a 2-yard rushing touchdown at the 6:18 mark. Tristen Wallace then scored the last points of the period after catching a 19-yard pass from Morton, allowing PVAMU some half time cushion with a 40-14 lead.
Prairie View A&M continued their dominant showing after the brak. Trazon Connley completed a 31-yard pass to Hardy for their first touchdown of the second half with 9:03 left in the period. After intercepting a TSU pass, Skinner completed a 23-yard return and lengthened PVAMU's lead 53-14. Connley threw for his second touchdown of the quarter to Andre Lewis for 64 yards.
The Panther's defense kept Texas Southern out of the end zone throughout the fourth. Enabling PVAMU to both start and end the fourth quarter leading 60-14, the largest margin of victory in the history of the Labor Day Classic series.
Coming out of the final game of the season, Morton looked back on his 'bittersweet' final game playing with a number of players he came into the program with.
"[I'm] excited and sad," he said. "Excited because we won the game, that's what we're supposed to do. Sad because it's the last game with the seniors. I came in with a lot of these seniors and it's sad because,it's our last game and I have a great bond with them."
Dooley said now that the season is over, the team has found a sense of identity and now understands his way of play.We had a great season. Thank you for everything #PVAMUFootball pic.twitter.com/tOwoBZLrHb— PVAMU Panthers (@PVAMUPanthers) November 24, 2018
"They know who I am now," he said. "They know what I stand for and now they know their identification, which is: 'we're going to play hard for 60 minutes regardless of who we play and what we do'. It's going to be some adversity, but you have to be able to overcome those things. I think the team has gotten stronger through the loses. You never can benefit off of losses, but when you lose it gives you that strength and understanding."
With the season coming to a close, the coaches will now focus on recruiting in the off season and the team will start preparing for Spring Football.

As the football careers of some come to a close, Dooley said he reminded his players of today's meaning.
"I tried to warn the guys, even the guys that weren't seniors, that when this day comes and that opportunity is over, it's like the world ended. But it's really not, it's the ending of something and the start of something new. We want to make sure that when those young men leave here they're successful no matter what."

Alabama A&M Men's Basketball adds 2 players during early signing period
The Bulldogs signed two players during the NCAA's early signing period.
The newest members of the program are a pair of Tennessee Valley standouts in forward Mason Ellison (Huntsville, Ala./Lee High School) and combo guard Garrett Hicks (Madison, Ala./James Clemens High School).
"These are two outstanding editions that we're extremely excited about," Howard said. "Both of these young men are highly-talented players who not only fill needs on our program, but also have the potential to establish a strong foundation for our program's future.
"Both Garrett and Mason are players who we have recruited heavily from the very beginning. They're local players who are from our campus' immediate footprint, and anytime you have players of their caliber right here in your backyard, it is important to keep that talent here in Huntsville."
Garrett Hicks | Guard | 6-0 | 170 | Madison, Ala. (James Clemens High School)
Hicks is a 6-0 and 170-pound combo guard who has starred for the past three seasons at James Clemens High School in Madison, Ala. … As a junior last season, Hicks averaged 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists per game and 2.1 steals per game while helping James Clemens reach the Class 7A Northwest Regional semifinals in the Alabama High School Athletic Association postseason. … Hicks also is a career 90-percent free-throw shooter. … Following the 2017-18 season, Hicks was a second-team selection on the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Class 7A all-state team, and he was an All-Huntsville Region selection by Al.com.
"Garrett is a really nice pickup," Howard said. "With Garrett, you're talking about one of the state's best players who can play either the 1 or 2 positions. To gain a player with that type of versatility and talent gives you a lot of options for the future. Not only is he a player who is comfortable with the ball in his hands, but he also is an outstanding shooter and has an extremely high basketball IQ. And let's not forget that he's a 90-percent free-throw shooter, which is a huge bonus."
Mason Ellison | Forward | 6-6 | 170 | Huntsville, Ala. (Lee High School)\
Ellison is a 6-6 and 170-pound small forward who has starred the past three seasons for Alabama state power Lee High School in Huntsville, Ala. … As a junior last season, Ellison averaged 15.8 points, 8. Rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.9 assists while helping Lee reach the Class 5A Northwest Regional in the Alabama High School Athletic Association's postseason. … Following the 2017-18 season, Ellison was a third-team selection on the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Class 5A all-state team, and he was an All-Huntsville Region selection by Al.com.
"Mason is an extremely versatile player," Howard said. "He's got a lot of talent, but what I love is his toughness. From rebounding to defense, he's the type of player who does a lot of things that help you win basketball games. With Mason, we're getting a player who has a very high ceiling and should definitely make a positive impact on our program."
