GARLAND, Texas — Mississippi Valley State won 17 straight SWAC games this season before finally losing one last week. The Delta Devils weren’t about to lose two in a row. Top seed MVSU used an 11-0 run to surge past upset-minded Jackson State, 63-60, in Wednesday’s quarterfinals of the Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament at Garland Special Events Center.
Jackson State, the No. 8 seed, was shooting a sizzling 59 percent when it took a 44-40 lead with 14:34 left on a Sydney Coleman dunk. MVSU then scored 11 straight points, including two spectacular slams by Cor-J Cox, to pull ahead, 51-44, with 8:42 to play.
Jackson State refused to go away as Christian Williams nailed a 3-pointer to get within one, 59-58, with two minutes to play. Jaskson State (7-24) had the final possession and a chance to send the game to overtime with 25 seconds left, but Williams missed two 3-point attempts.
Mississippi Valley State (19-12) went 17-1 in conference play, losing its final regular season game to Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
