TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Ashley Savage lost her most prized possession one week before her collegiate softball season began. Savage’s longtime softball mentor, coach and friend, Tommy Barnhill, lost his three-month battle with lung cancer Feb. 1. He was diagnosed with the disease in October, while Savage was playing on the Stillman College volleyball team. “It was tough not being there, but I honestly thought nothing would stop him or slow him down,” Savage said. “I never thought it would come down to this or that it was as bad as it really was.”
He lost his battle 10 days before her debut with the Tigers.
