Ram Ramblings: WSSU women make a rather large statement

RALEIGH, North Carolina  --  Maybe the Winston-Salem State women turned the corner on Wednesday night with a surprising upset of 15th-ranked Shaw in Raleigh. The women had a real confidence problem midway through the conference season and kept losing close games.

Coach A.G. Hall, however, never panicked after losing five straight. The Rams have since beaten Livingstone (45-42), St. Aug’s (58-56) and on Wednesday hit 19 of 21 free throws on their way to a 68-60 win over Shaw.

Shaw is the defending Division II national champions, which made the win a big deal. It was Hall’s signature win in his first season at WSSU.

The Bears aren’t as good as last season’s team that went all the way but they are still the class of the CIAA. The Bears have lost three times at Spaulding Gym this season, but the Rams didn’t care about any of that after Wednesday’s win.

Hall has a calmness in his coaching style but he is still firm when his team messes up.
