ELIZABETH CITY, North Carolina -- Elizabeth City State University scored on six of their first seven possessions and cruised to a 71-0 shutout of Virginia University of Lynchburg Saturday night at Roebuck Stadium.
Lovie Banks-Rose, Jr got the first of the evening’s eight offensive touchdowns on a 27 yard scoring reception just 1:26 into the contest. ECSU got three more scores in the opening quarter; a 50 yard fumble recovery by Malcolm Cherry and rushing TDs from Josh Joyner and Ronald Gray to take a 28-0 advantage.
Rose was the recipient of another TD pass, this time from Jaquez Riles, a 50 yard bomb with 11:04 to go in the first half.
Overall the Vikings rolled up 627 yards of total offense on 75 plays from scrimmage and defensively held the Dragons to a paltry 62 yards of total offense.
The ECSU defense wreaked havoc on the VUL quarterbacks all evening, sacking the Dragons’ signal callers eight times for a loss of 56 yards. Stephen Williams led all Viking defenders with 9 tackles (6 solo) while Darren Wilson chipped in with 8 tackles including one and a half sacks for a loss of 13 yards.
As dominating at the performance against the Dragons was, it will not affect the Vikings in the win column. Earlier this summer the NCAA deemed VUL one of 30 teams that would be considered a non-countable opponent for the 2015 season, a decision that was reached after ECSU’s schedule was released.
ECSU will travel to take on Benedict College next Saturday in Columbia, SC. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.
