LINCOLN, Pennsylvania -- The Chowan University football team ended the regular season on a high note after thrashing the Lincoln University (PA) Lions 49-3. The Hawks end the year 6-4 overall and 4-3 in CIAA play while the Lions round out the 2015 season with a 3-7 overall record and 1-6 mark in league play.
The Hawks collected 459 offensive yards in the victory while holding the Lions to 206 offensive yards on the afternoon.
Reginald Williams led the effort for the Hawks on the ground. He tallied 19 carries for 203 yards while scoring two touchdowns in the win. Tyree Lee followed with 10 carries for 87 yards and one touchdown.
Jordan Watkins completed 11 of 18 pass attempts for 203 yards and threw three touchdown passes in the win. He connected with six different receivers over the course of the contest. Kaine Lombard hauled in five passes totaling 69 yards followed by Anthony Prince with two receptions for 18 yards. Lombard, Drew Buck and Damian Ellis each caught one touchdown pass for the Chowan Blue and White.
Defensively, Chris Rodgers and Wesley Bray each notched eight tackles for the Hawks. Anthony Joffrion followed with seven stops (three solo, four assisted) and two sacks (11 yards). Roderick Lindsey tallied six solos tackles in the contest while Torrel Saffold grabbed one interception (16 yards).
Edward McKenzie completed eight of 25 pass attempts for 114 yards in the Lions' setback. Brandon Rower tallied three receptions for 72 yards. Stephen Scott led the Lions' running game with 26 carries for 56 yards. Brion Robinson led all players in the game with nine tackles (five solo, four assisted).
The Hawks scored in their first drive of the game when Watkins connected with Buck on a 37-yard touchdown pass. Nick Hahula made good on the point after attempt to give Chowan a quick 7-0 lead. With 9:49 on the clock in the first quarter, Lee capped a four play, 53 yard drive for the Hawks with a five-yard touchdown run to give Chowan additional momentum. Hahula made good on the point after attempt to extend the Hawks' advantage to 14-0. Chowan scored once more before the close of the first quarter when Watkins tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Ellis. Hahula's point after attempt was successful, leaving the Lions trailing 21-0 with just under three minutes left to play in the first quarter.
Brett Arklelian put Lincoln (PA) on the board with 12:29 on the clock in the second quarter using a 31-yard field goal. Chowan's defense kept the Lions off the scoreboard for the remainder of the second quarter and held a 21-3 advantage heading into halftime.
At the start of the third quarter, Nate Wyche's fumble recovery at the Lincoln 27 yard line setup another scoring drive for the Hawks. Watkins heaved a 27-yard touchdown pass to Lombard on the next play and Hahula's point after attempt was good to push Chowan ahead 28-3. Saffold intercepted Bryan Luke's pass during Lincoln (PA)'s next drive, which set up Williams for an 18-yard touchdown run. Hahula's point after attempt was good, resulting in a 35-3 advantage for the Hawks.
With 8:49 on the clock in the third quarter, the Hawks struck again when Vincente` Stafford returned Arkelian's punt 45-yards for a Chowan touchdown. Hahula's point after attempt was successful, leaving the Lions trailing 42-3. The Hawks scored once more before the end of the third quarter as Williams' two-yard touchdown run capped a five play, 83-yard drive. Hahula made good on the point after attempt to solidify the 49-3 victory for Chowan.
Chowan's 6-4 finish in 2015 marks the first winning season for the Hawks since 2012 (6-4 overall, 5-2 CIAA).
