NEW ORLEANS — Senior guard Morris Wright scored 16 of his 21 points in the first half Thursday to lead NAIA No. 19 Xavier University of Louisiana in a 73-62 men's basketball victory against Miles.
The Gold Rush are 5-0 for the seventh time in Dannton Jackson's 13 seasons as head coach.
Wesley Pluviose-Philip had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists for Xavier. Elex Carter had 10 points, seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals, and Gary Smith and Lucas Martin-Julien scored eight points apiece.
Martin-Julien had seven assists and three steals, and Smith had five assists. Martin-Julien and Smith have combined for 45 assists and 13 turnovers this season.
Joshua Samuels scored 16 points for Miles, an NCAA Division II member which counted the game as an exhibition. Gerrald Maddox scored 14 points, and Eric Halliwell had 10. The Golden Bears, who will open their regular season Saturday in a tournament at West Georgia, lost all three of their exhibitions.
Xavier built its advantage to 24 points after leading 38-23 at halftime.
Xavier shot 51 percent from the floor — the third consecutive game the Gold Rush topped 50 percent — and limited Miles to 33.9 percent. Xavier is 2-0 this season against NCAA Division II opponents and 21-7 during Jackson's tenure.
Xavier will visit Mobile at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first Gold Rush road game of the regular season.
