Howard University Earns Second Consecutive SWAC Soccer Title

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama --  Howard earned its second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon at the John Hunt Soccer Complex, defeating Alabama State 2-1. This season, the Bison receive an Automatic Qualifier into the NCAA Tournament.

Anna Mitchell chipped the ball over the top 45 seconds in to the match for the first score of the game. The Lady Hornets battled back with a great number of shots, but each attempt was blocked by the Bison defense. An assist from Shyann Cordova put ALST back into the game, allowing a headbutt goal by Shelbi Vienna-Hallam to tie the game, 1-1.

Sara Vaughan scored first in the second half, adding another header to the championship game’s resume. This goal gave HOWD another one score advantage over the Lady Hornets, ultimately giving the Bison the game.

Although she did not score, Ariela Lewis secured a team-high four shots – all being on target.
HOWD held a 20-10 shot advantage over ALST.
