Southern defense dominates Alabama State in SWAC opener

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana -- Questions surrounded Southern’s defense Saturday night when it faced Alabama State.

Would the Jaguars 4-2-5 formation hold up against SWAC competition? Was the porous showing by the rush defense in the first two games a reflection of Southern or its opponents?

Early in the game, if there were answers to be found it didn’t appear that Southern’s defense had them. But, boosted by strong play from the Jaguars offense and special teams, the defense settled in to do its part in a game that Southern dominated in every phase.

By the fourth quarter, the only question that remained was whether Southern would pick up its first shutout since 2013. Southern settled for a 64-6 win and the satisfaction of playing a complete game.

“We’re all coming together as one,” SU cornerback Danny Johnson said. “That’s why we take it day by day. We struggled a little bit in the first two games but we’ve come together. It makes us better.”
