LORMAN, Mississippi -- Alcorn head coach Barbara Oliveira made her first big signing with the addition of men's tennis standout Gjorgji Popovski, announced Tuesday.
Popovski is a former No. 1 ranked junior in Macedonia and represented his country in the Euro League. He currently holds a Top-500 ranking in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and won national titles in Macedonia.
"Gjorgji will provide a big boost to our lineup. We expect him to come in right away and compete for one of the top positions in our lineup," Oliveira said. "The goal is to put together a championship team and Gjorgji has more than enough talent to be a part of it."
Popovski transfers to Alcorn from Northwestern Ohio JC. In two years, he posted a 25-9 singles record individually. He helped the Racers tally a 22-2 team record in 2017 and 13-6 in 2018.
The Skopje, Macedonia native will have two years of eligibility remaining at Alcorn. He joins a Braves squad that returns four starters from last year.
