Ed Hardin: A&T's Sam Washington leading a seamless transition after a perfect season



GREENSBORO, North Carolina — Sam Washington has been given the keys to a Ferrari.

And he's not going to change a thing.

The new head football coach at A&T walked off the practice field this morning just as he'd done countless times. But this time, he wasn't headed to a defensive team meeting or film session or to Rod Broadway's office to talk football. He had reporters waiting for him.

When: 7 p.m. Aug. 25.

Where: Montgomery, Ala.
TV: ESPN.

"It feels wonderful," Washington said. "Just to be out here once again, smelling the grass, smelling the equipment and watching the kids fly around. It's a good thing."

Some things never change, and summertime football practice is one of the things Washington never wants to change. But there's a different feel to it now. Broadway has retired to a life of fishing and has left the program to his former defensive coordinator. Washington ackowledges that this is, in fact, very different for him personally.
