S.C. State Bulldogs Close Out Canadian Foreign Tour

8148MONTREAL, CANADA — The South Carolina State men's basketball team closed out their four-day Canadian Foreign Tour playing three of the top teams in Canada.

"This has been an outstanding trip and experience for our basketball team.  To come and compete in August against some of top teams in Canada. I want to thank our administration for allowing us to start our pre-season in this manner, "said head coach Murray Garvin. "Our guys will never forget the memories we made and the sites that they were able to see while in Montreal & Quebec."

During their time in Canada the Bulldogs had a chance to visit historic sites such as Mount Royal Park, Old Montreal, and tour of the beautiful Quebec City just to name a few.

Along with their commitment to play in the scheduled exhibition games, the men's basketball team and coaching staff took time out of their busy schedule to give back to the city of Montreal by visiting Sun Youth Community Center and conducted a basketball clinic for underprivileged children. Coach Garvin closed the session with a motivational speech stressing the importance of an education and reminded students that " A dream without a plan is just a dream."  The team then took pictures with the children and signed autographs.

South Carolina State exhibition tour included competing against three of the top teams in the Quebec province. Queen's University (88-93 Overtime, Loss), University of Laval (84-93, Loss) and Concordia University (74-80, Loss). All three games were played consecutively.

"Playing on the road and under FIBA rules for the first time gave our team valuable game si
mulation in early August," said Garvin. "We were able to see things that we need to improve and also a lot of positive that we can build on."

In all three contests, the Bulldogs either held a lead or competed to the wire on the home court of each opponent.  "I must admit that the only thing we didn't get was a win on the scoreboard, however we won in every other aspect", says Garvin

Garvin stated, "I would like to personally thank our parents, Alumni Hank Allen and his wife who made the trip to support the team. I am super proud of our guys and how hard they competed on this tour.  We look forward to the season and the preparation it will take to get to the winner's circle of the MEAC Tournament in March."
