JACKSON, Mississippi -- The first week of fall camp is a get-to-know-you-type of situation. It’s the first time the coaching staff can have their team on the practice field and begin evaluating the team.
It’s also an opportunity for the student-athletes to begin to further their understanding of the installation of the Air Raid Offense and the 3-3-5 Stack Defense.
Jackson State head football coach Tony Hughes isn’t focused on the depth chart yet, but he’s liked what he’s so far.
“The first couple weeks is really about teaching and getting your football team ready,” Hughes said. “We aren’t going to start establishing the first team and second team until later in camp. But, I’ve been proud to see the older guys taking on leadership roles and not taking plays off and living in the moment. It sets a great example for the younger guys on the team.”
One of the themes early in camp is the heat. With the heat index, well over the 100-degree mark, the Tigers have been taking necessary water breaks to stay hydrated.
“We have to stay hydrated,” Hughes said. “If we want to practice our best, we have to take care of ourselves. That doesn’t just include the student-athletes, that’s the trainers and coaches too.”
The Tigers return to practice Thursday and will build to its first scrimmage that’s set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Payton Center.
