MEAC to use some instant replay

Norfolk, VA  - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference will institute instant replay during its 2011 football games broadcast on the ESPN family of networks.

After the season, the MEAC will evaluate the replay system's effectiveness and future implementation.

Former S.C. State OL Lee sets sights on playoffs with Bucs

TAMPA, Fla. - James Lee will play the biggest game of his young career today in New Orleans.

In 2007, Lee was playing at South Carolina State as an offensive lineman honing his craft in hopes of one day being a integral part of an offensive line in the National Football League. Three years later, the former Bulldog will play against the defending Super Bowl champions and division rival Saints as he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers try to make their way into the playoffs.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' James Lee, Jeremy Trueblood battle for right tackle spot

James Lee, who missed most of the last two games with an ankle sprain, took the first reps Thursday at right tackle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but still alternated with Jeremy Trueblood. Coach Raheem Morris did not name a starter for Sunday's game at New Orleans and said he plans to evaluate the practice tape.

"The first team reps are being split right now. I would have to say James Lee went out first. Trueblood went out second and they went out there and competed again today. I've got to go watch tape and evaluate it, obviously.''

South Carolina State Releases 2011 Football Schedule

ORANGEBURG, SC – South Carolina State University released its 2011 football schedule on yesterday, a slate that includes five home games, six road contests and two meetings with Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents.

The Bulldogs open the campaign Thursday, Sept. 1, at Central Michigan, one of two FBS teams Coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough's team will face during the season and the first of three consecutive road opponents for SC State. The CMU Chippewas finished the 2010 campaign with a 3-9, 2-6 MAC record, and a 33-0 season opening win over the Hampton Pirates (6-5, 5-3 MEAC).

The Bulldogs will take on 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Co-Champion Bethune-Cookman (10-2, 7-1 MEAC) at Daytona Beach on Sept. 10 before traveling to Bloomington, Indiana, Sept. 17 to meet Big 10 member Indiana (5-7), the second FBS opponent on the 2011 schedule.

SC State opens its home schedule Sept. 24 against Delaware State (3-8, 2-6 MEAC) . Other home games include North Carolina Central (3-8), Oct. 8, in the 2011 Homecoming contest, first-time opponent Georgia State (6-5) Oct. 15, 2010 MEAC Co-Champion Florida A&M (8-3, 7-1 MEAC)Oct. 22 and North Carolina A&T (1-10, 1-7 MEAC) Nov. 12.

NCCU is one of two new MEAC members on this year's slate, while Georgia State and the Bulldogs will be meeting for the first time.

Additional road games include Norfolk State (6-5, 4-4 MEAC) Oct. 1, Howard (1-10, 0-8 MEAC) Oct. 29 and Savannah State (1-10), the second new league foe on the schedule, Nov. 19.

Absent from this year's schedule, which includes an open date Nov. 5, are traditional MEAC rivals Hampton and Morgan State. The two have been replaced by NCCU and Savannah State.

Starting times for all games on the 2011 schedule, which is listed below, will be announced later.

The MEAC is expected to have a new look in 2011 with new a coaching staff at North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T, Delaware State and Howard University.

S.C. State football schedule close to completion

With the date confirmed of a second game next season against a Division I opponent, the 2011 football schedule for South Carolina State is close to completion.

Visit Indiana University’s athletics website and it lists the Hoosiers playing host to the Bulldogs Sept. 17. Earlier this year, it was revealed the school was finalizing talks with Central Michigan for a tentative Sept. 3 season-opening game.

Report: CMU to open 2011 season against South Carolina State

The Central Michigan football team will open the 2011 season against Football Championship Subdivision opponent South Carolina State on Sept. 3, 2011, according to a report Wednesday by The (Orangeburg, S.C.) Times and Democrat.

The game marks the third consecutive time CMU will play its home opener at Kelly/Shorts Stadium against an FCS team. The Chippewas beat Hampton 33-0 on Sept. 2 in their first game of the season.

Even with its problems, S.C. State football has improved under Pough

Quarterback Malcolm Long ends successful S.C. State career with dark clouds of not winning any FCS playoff games in three attempts.

STATESBORO, Ga. - Shared between offensive lineman Johnny Culbreath, linebacker Julius Wilkerson and quarterback Malcolm Long are 35 victories, 11 school career records, three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championships and a black college football national championship.

Defending the legacy they and 11 fellow South Carolina State seniors established in four years would seem unnecessary. STATESBORO, Ga. - The eyes of South Carolina State quarterback Malcolm Long were blood red from heavy tears shed Saturday at Allen Paulson Stadium.

His head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough was equally inconsolable and near-speechless in what was supposed to be a different showing for the Bulldogs in the opening round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Eagles roll past 'Dogs in playoffs

STATESBORO, Ga. --- Georgia Southern looked to its defense and reserves Saturday to overcome a key loss to starting quarterback Jaybo Shaw in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Shaw was injured after a hit midway through the first quarter, but the Eagles found ample volunteers to step up during a 41-16 victory at Paulson Stadium.

"This team is very special," Georgia Southern backup quarterback Jerick McKinnon said. "There's a brotherhood here. We all believe in each other, and we'll fight for each other, and that's going to take you a long way."

STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern used a relentless ground game to control the ball for nearly 42 minutes and beat South Carolina State 41-16 Saturday in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Twelve players totaled 323 yards on 77 carries for the Eagles (8-4), who will play at No. 2 seed William & Mary on Dec. 4. J.J. Wilcox rushed for two touchdowns and Russell DeMasi one for Georgia Southern, but special teams and defense also played a key role.

SC State Bulldogs happy to get a chance

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Preparing for another FCS playoff appearance was something South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough did not envision six weeks ago.

He acknowledged that a 14-0 loss to Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 16 more than snapped the Bulldogs’ MEAC-record 21-game winning streak. Pough referred to it as one of the lowest points in his tenure, and how S.C. State rebounded to win an at-large berth to face Georgia Southern in today’s opening round as one of the highest.

“I had no idea we had a shot,” Pough said. “The fact that we hadn’t had very good luck in getting an at-large berth up until now, and I was so down in the dumps. I felt like I had done a poor job of creating a sense of urgency in preparation for Bethune. They came in and had outplayed us and shut us out.

No secrets for GSU, South Carolina State

STATESBORO - Football Championship Subdivision first-round playoff opponents Georgia Southern and South Carolina State are neighbors without many secrets.

Video technicians for both schools split the 98-mile trek down Route 301 from Statesboro to Orangeburg, S.C., on Sunday to exchange tapes of the teams' four most recent games. Usually, teams download their tapes and send them over the Internet, but it proved easier and faster just to drive the DVDs to a designated spot.

'Mighty Mouse' leading SCSU

David Erby could see it coming. Sitting in his stance, pre-play, the diminutive linebacker (he claims 5-10, 225) sniffed the play out, and on the snap, sprinted toward a Norfolk State receiver. He got there when the ball did, dropping the Spartan with a whack that drew an audible reaction from the home stands at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium not once, but twice, the second time coming when the play was shown on the stadium's video board.  "I love it," Erby said. "You have to give the fans something to watch."

Erby, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, has given Bulldogs fans plenty to watch this season, recording 92 tackles and 5.5 sacks. A former safety and tailback at Rock Hill High School, Erby doesn't exactly match up physically next to fellow Bulldogs linebackers Marshall McFadden (6-2, 235) and Julius Wilkerson (6-4, 225). But Erby makes up for his non-prototypical size with a "Mighty Mouse" style of play, taking on whatever comes his way.

2010 Division I Football Championship Field Released

A hot Florida A&M University Rattlers team (8-3, 7-1) that just defeated the #7 FCS ranked Bethune Cookman Wildcats 38-27, (10-1, 7-1 MEAC) was not invited. BCU and S.C. State (9-2, 7-1 MEAC) will represent the conference in the playoffs.

INDIANAPOLIS - The field of 20 teams competing for the 2010 NCAA Division I Football Championship was announced today by the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee.

Appalachian State University (9-2) tops the bracket as the top seed after capturing the automatic qualifying berth from the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers, who won three consecutive championships from 2005-07, are making their 18th appearance and sixth straight overall.

Second-seeded College of William and Mary (8-3) is making its ninth appearance. The Tribe captured the Colonial Athletic Association automatic berth.

University of Delaware (9-2), which is making its 15th overall tournament appearance, is the number-three seed. The 2003 national champion, the Blue Hens tied William and Mary for the CAA championship.

Montana State University (9-2) is the number-four seed after capturing the Big Sky Conference automatic berth. The Bobcats, the 1984 national champion, are making its fifth appearance and first since 2006.

Rounding out this year’s seeded teams is Eastern Washington University (9-2) with the number-five seed. The Eagles are making its eighth overall appearance.

First-round hosts include Big South automatic qualifier Coastal Carolina (6-5), North Dakota State University (7-4), Missouri Valley Football Conference automatic qualifier University of Northern Iowa (7-4), and Georgia Southern University (7-4).

The top four national seeds will host winners from the first round match-ups. Others hosting second rounds game will be Eastern Washington, Bethune-Cookman University (10-1), who was the automatic qualifier from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State University (9-2) and Stephen F. Austin State University (9-2), who earned the Southland Conference’s automatic bid.

Other automatic qualifiers in the tournament include Robert Morris University (8-2), the Northeast Conference champion, clinched its first trip into the championship. Also making its first trip into the championship is Southeast Missouri State University, winner of the automatic bid from the Ohio Valley Conference. Winning the Patriot League was the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University (9-2).

Other teams in the field are New Hampshire University (7-4), South Carolina State University (9-2), the defending national champion Villanova University (7-4), Western Illinois University (7-4) and Wofford College (9-2). Along with Southeast Missouri State, North Dakota State and Robert Morris are making their first ever appearance in the championship.

Ten conferences received automatic-qualifying berths: the Big Sky Conference, Big South Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, Missouri Valley Football Conference, Northeast Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, Patriot League, Southern Conference and Southland Conference.

SC State rides big plays, defense to win over Morgan Bears

BALTIMORE, MD — South Carolina State's offense made the most of what little time they had on the field. FCS No. 15 South Carolina State had the ball for just under 24 minutes, but the Bulldogs used several big plays on both sides of the ball to hand Morgan State a 32-10 loss last night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hughes Stadium.

The Bulldogs showed why they are ranked second in total offense in the MEAC. South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) piled up eight plays of over 20 yards, and the defense forced a fumble, an interception, a safety, and held the Bears offense to only 154 yards even though Morgan State ran 59 plays and had the ball for 36:47.

Donald Hill-Eley Coaches 100th Game For Morgan

The Ravens aren't the only Baltimore football team playing on national television Nov. 11 -- Morgan State will be on ESPNU when it hosts No. 15 South Carolina State. The Bears (4-5, 3-3 MEAC) are coming off a 37-25 loss Nov. 6 at Norfolk State while he Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 MEAC) beat Howard, 54-14, in their Senior Day game.

South Carolina State leads the all-time series between the schools, 28-5-1. Morgan State's last victory during the series was a 23-12 upset in Orangeburg, S.C., in 2002, Donald Hill Eley's first year as head coach.

Nov. 11's game marks the 100th since Hill-Eley came to Morgan State. Now in his ninth year leading the program, Hill-Eley has a 46-53 record, which makes him the program's third-winningest coach behind Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.

S.C. State takes down Morgan State, 32-10

BALTIMORE, MD - No. 14 South Carolina State came into Thursday night's game with Morgan State ranked second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in offense. The Bears got a good look at why the Bulldogs are so good. Morgan State couldn't stop a South Carolina State offense that made numerous big plays throughout the game at Hughes Stadium. The Bulldogs came up with a number of long gains that helped them to a 32-10 victory over the Bears.

The game was close early; the Bulldogs had a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. But South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) broke it open by scoring 22 of the final 25 points to take command and win its fourth straight game.

SCSU Bulldogs get Long on success

ORANGEBURG — Senior quarterback Malcolm Long threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns to become South Carolina State’s career passing leader (6,363 yards) as the Bulldogs cruised to a 54-14 victory against Howard on Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

The Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter off a 40-yard inception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Marshall McFadden. Senior running back Chris Merrill scored the first of two touchdowns with a 4-yard run and Long connected with Thomas Williams on a 31-yard touchdown pass to make the score 20-0 in the first quarter.

Howard Bison Drops Fourth-Straight, 54-14 to South Carolina State

The season is coming to a close but the losses continue to pile up for the Howard Bison, who suffered their fourth-straight defeat Nov. 6 in a 54-14 shellacking by the South Carolina State Bulldogs in Orangeburg, S.C.



S.C. quarterback Malcolm Long threw for 275 yards and two scores, powering S.C. State to a 37-7 halftime lead. When Long wasn’t torching Howard through the air, running back Chris Merrill was gashing them on the ground, accounting for three scores on just 42 yards rushing.

DSU Hornets say they're up for challenge against S.C. State Bulldogs

DOVER, DE -- A tough season will not become any easier today when Delaware State's football team hosts South Carolina State, the two-time reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions who are ranked 17th nationally in Division I-AA. DSU (1-6 overall, 1-4 MEAC) hosts the Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1) at Alumni Stadium at 1 this afternoon. The Hornets say they will not be intimidated.

"They're one of the best teams in the MEAC, so we've had to prepare hard this week for a very competitive match," said Andre Caroll, a redshirt senior defensive lineman for DSU.

The Hornets are hoping to follow the same blueprint as last season, when they won two out of their last three games to finish 4-7 despite struggling to a 1-5 start, which included a forfeit loss because of a scheduling conflict.

DSU learning painful lesson, Lavan says

DOVER, DE -- There is no class at Delaware State that can teach its football team how to finish games. That, according to Hornets coach Al Lavan, has to be learned through difficult lessons. Those lessons don't get much more painful than DSU's 34-24 loss at Morgan State last Saturday, when the Hornets allowed 13 points in the final 20 seconds of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

Lavan remains confident in his team's ability, even as the Hornets (1-6 overall, 1-4 MEAC) prepare to host two-time reigning conference champion South Carolina State (5-2, 3-1) at Alumni Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Delaware State coach says team has to make plays ‎

DOVER, Del. - Former NFL head coach Bill Parcells once famously said, "You are what your record says you are."

At 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the MEAC heading into Saturday's home game against 17th-ranked South Carolina State, Delaware State head coach Al Lavan was inclined to agree on Tuesday. Although pleased with the Hornets' resiliency shown throughout the season, Lavan has seen too many missed opportunities and mental mistakes to try to sugarcoat his team's record.

Treatment of QB Long leaves S.C. State coach, players with sour taste

It was the thud heard round the MEAC.

Late in Saturday's game, trailing 14-0, S.C. State quarterback Malcolm Long let fly with a pass across the middle of the field that slammed square into the chest of Bethune-Cookman linebacker Ryan Lewis. Lewis promptly secured the ball and plopped down in the middle of the field.

And, that was the end of the Bulldogs' 21-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference winning streak. Then again, it wasn't so easy to decipher that the Bulldogs had experienced so much success from the sidelines at Oliver C. Dawson because of what was taking place in the stands.

Bethune-Cookman KOs 2-time MEAC champ South Carolina State Bulldogs

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Bethune-Cookman football coach Brian Jenkins said he compared Saturday's game against two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion South Carolina State to a heavyweight boxing match.

If so, it was Cassius Clay versus Sonny Liston in 1964. And just as Clay (before he was known as Muhammad Ali) claimed he "shook up" the world in '64, the Wildcats shook up the MEAC world Saturday by beating the seemingly unbeatable Bulldogs 14-0 on their home field.

"We tabbed this game a heavyweight fight, and we said we're going to take it 15 rounds," Jenkins said. "And if it came down to the last round and we had to go toe-to-toe, we were willing to do that. It just so happened we were able to win 14 of the 15 rounds."

'Cats coach shares moment

ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- How big was Bethune-Cookman's 14-0 upset of defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion South Carolina State on Saturday? Count the ways.

· No team has beaten the Bulldogs in conference play since 2007; B-CU's win snapped a 21-game conference win streak and a 13-game home wining streak for South Carolina State.

· It was B-CU's first road shutout in 10 years -- the last at Howard in 2000.

· It left B-CU as one of only two unbeaten teams in the MEAC. The Wildcats and Hampton are both 4-0, and the two teams will meet at Hampton on Nov. 6.



Shut down and out: Bethune-Cookman blanks Bulldogs, 14-0
The atmosphere at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium Saturday in the closing seconds was like nothing seen at a South Carolina State football game in three seasons. Fans who were initially expressing their frustration with boos started quietly exiting the stands. On the sidelines, the Bulldog players were throwing their helmets down with confused looks on their faces.

Meanwhile, the opposing sidelines and visitors' section were a sight of uninhibited celebration as the Bethune-Cookman players showered head coach Brian Jenkins with Gatorade and carried him off the field like a conquering hero.

The 23rd-ranked Wildcats had defeated 9th-ranked South Carolina State 14-0 before a stunned 10,077 fans. The loss saw an end to the Bulldogs' Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record 21-game winning streak and 13-game home-winning streak, both dating back to a 17-16 defeat to Delaware State on Oct. 27, 2007.

Pough sees B-C coach as rising star

The announcement of the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year is still weeks away. As far as head football coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough of 10th-ranked South Carolina State is concerned, it's a foregone conclusion who will win this year's honor - Bethune-Cookman's Brian Jenkins.

"He is definitely the Coach of the Year in our league," said Pough during Monday's press conference. "They're the most improved team I've seen in this league and it's a good thing. It's good for the fact that it will help the strength of our league in the fact that he'll go out and beat some people outside of our league. ... So he'll be a force in this league for years to come."

SCSU Bulldogs extend win streak with 34-13 win over Norfolk State

A special teams' snafu ended South Carolina State's season last November in Boone, N.C.
Almost a year later, a similar surreal miscue enabled the Bulldogs to rally from an early deficit and extend their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference-record winning streak Saturday at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

Reserve defensive back Josh McFadden recovered an errant punt by Norfolk State's Troy Muenzer and returned it 47 yards to tie the game at 7-7. S.C. State added 17 more points in the first half and pulled away for a 34-13 victory. "I've never been involved in a play like that," McFadden said. "First time I've ever seen something like that."

After 30-plus years, ’76 and ’80 Bulldogs receive National Black Championship rings

SANTEE, S.C. - Slowly but surely, they entered the dimly lit ballroom at the Whitten Inn Friday night. They shook hands, exchanged greetings and shared a laugh or two from memories past. They were Black College National Champions, former South Carolina State Bulldogs brought back together in Santee to receive an honor long overdue - their national title rings.

It was one last chance for the Bulldogs 1976 and 1980 teams to share memories from their playing days.

"It's like the Reverend said earlier," former Bulldogs outside linebacker R.V. Brown said. "For us to receive this 34 years later, we would have not realized the impact that we had being the first school in the state of South Carolina to win a National Championship. We didn't know the value of it at the time, but right now, we know that and we've got that."



Special teams miscue ruins Norfolk State's day

ORANGEBURG, S.C - The opening minutes played out to perfection for Norfolk State on Saturday in its game at No. 9 South Carolina State.

Just 59 seconds into the game, Spartan defensive back Ricardo Volcin stepped in front of a sideline pass by Bulldog quarterback Malcolm Long and raced 39 yards into the end zone. After S.C. State was forced to punt on its next possession, Norfolk State appeared on its way to winning for the first time in seven tries at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium.

With 10:24 remaining in the first quarter, one bizarre special teams miscue turned the momentum and contest quickly back in South Carolina State's favor. A low snap was mishandled by punter Troy Muenzer who, in the process of trying to retrieve the football, illegally kicked it off the ground.

NSU report: New TE coach can't shake his passion

Mackinley Jane Blackwell loves to watch the Ducks. The 5-year-old isn't so much into lakes or ponds, or the Donald and Daisy kind. She takes after dad. So last Saturday, on Norfolk State's bye week, Spartans tight end coach Joe Blackwell went home to Myrtle Beach, S.C., scooped up Mackinley Jane and settled in for what qualifies as quality time in the Blackwell household.

" We sat up and we watched Clemson together," Blackwell said. "Then we watched Oregon" - the Ducks. "For some reason, she really likes Oregon." A first-year tight ends coach at Norfolk State, Blackwell travels back to his home state again today, this time for the Spartans' game at South Carolina State.

It's time for a little honesty.

Raise your hand if there was an urge to chuckle after watching the closing part of the MEAC commercial aired during Saturday's tape-delayed showing of the South Carolina State-Florida A&M football game. You know, the part where Commissioner Dennis Thomas says "athletic excellence" about the MEAC?

When it comes to football, the only "excellent" part being exhibited is the 20-game conference-winning streak by the Bulldogs and Bethune-Cookman's dominating 4-0 start. Aside from those two developments, there's truly not much for Thomas...

Well, we have our favorite. South Carolina State was awfully impressive dispatching Florida A&M on the road 19-0. The Bulldogs did settle for four field goal attempts after moving the ball, but given the way they dominated, that’s being a little bit picky. Norfolk State’s likely happy about the result – SC State would have been a beast of a game if they’d had the loss to focus them – but the abilities the Bulldogs displayed are worrisome enough. A tall task awaits the Spartans this week. Also, Bethune is still looking awfully good and Hampton stays unbeaten.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Maybe you saw the shark in the pool on "CSI:" the other night. Nothing a couple extra pounds of chlorine might solve. Or a 3-3-5 defense.

If a team is still sitting outside The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top 25, it probably will not be making a deep run into the playoffs later this fall. In fact, it would struggle just to make the 20-team field, which consists of 10 automatic bids to conference champions and 10 at-large bids. But that doesn't mean some teams outside the rankings won't make an impact on the playoffs. Whether they get in or not.

S.C. State extends contracts of Carter, Robertson

Last March, South Carolina State came two wins shy of sending both its mens and womens basketball teams to the NCAA Tournament. With hopes of creating more "March Madness" the next three seasons, the school Board of Trustees approved contract extensions for both head coaches Tim Carter for the men and Doug Robertson for the women.

The three-year extensions would keep both men, whose contracts were due to expire after this season, on the Orangeburg sidelines through the 2013-14 school year.

Taylor, FAMU hope to get ground game going against SCSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - If Florida A&M was seeking a "model" to follow for Saturday's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown against South Carolina State, it found one the hard way in Tennessee State.

Motivated by eight consecutive losses to the Rattlers, the Tigers roared to a 29-18 victory last Saturday at the Atlanta Football Classic. Now FAMU looks to emulate Tennessee State by attempting to end eight years of frustration by snapping a seven-game losing streak to the ninth-ranked Bulldogs.

"The last eight years, Florida A&M has not had a victory," Rattlers' head coach Joe Taylor said Tuesday. "There's no reason to deny it."

Ukpai stunned by slow start »

When Martin Ukpai made his first collegiate start in the Florida Classic last season and was named MVP of the annual season finale, the Florida A&M faithful raved over knowing that they had a solid quarterback for the future.

Four games into this season, Ukpai's rating in the poll of public opinion is questionable at best. Concerns mounted even more after the Rattlers suffered their first loss to a Division I-AA team when they fell 29-18 to Tennessee State University.

FAMU sticking with its running game

After Saturday's stunning loss to Tennessee State, coach Joe Taylor suggested that receiver T.J. Lawrence might figure more prominent in the offensive mix, but that's not saying that the Rattlers are about to abandon their running back.

That doesn't seem likely especially with the depth that FAMU has at the position for the first time in more than three seasons. But no matter which one of the four running backs that played against TSU carried the ball, they didn't gain much rushing. FAMU actually finished with just 24 yards on the ground as its eight-game win streak in the Atlanta Classic was snapped with a 29-18 loss.

FAMU must quickly shake off loss to TSU

ATLANTA — In so many ways, the way Tennessee State ran past Florida A&M on Saturday mirrored the Rattlers' loss to South Carolina State a year ago.

FAMU was pounded on the ground for 413 yards and barely responded in its 29-18 loss to the Tigers. South Carolina State beat FAMU 35-20 last year, but the Rattlers bounced back and won three straight games. This time, rebounding after TSU snapped an eight-year losing streak at the Georgia Dome might not be as easy because of the opponent — South Carolina State.

Pough expects FAMU to be better than in Saturday’s loss
If watching Florida A&M fall to Tennessee State this past weekend inspired additional confidence in ninth-ranked South Carolina State, head coach Oliver "Buddy" Pough gave no indication at Monday's press conference.

In fact, Pough believes the way the Rattlers were handled by the Tigers at the Atlanta Football Classic in allowing 11 quarterback sacks and close to 300 rushing yards will make them even more motivated for this Saturday's 6 p.m. clash at Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee.
