DSU Hornets Open Baseball Season at Arkansas

Dover, Del. - It's time to "play ball" at Delaware State University, as a new baseball season gets underway this weekend.

The Hornets will open the 2011 campaign tomorrow (Feb. 18) with a three-game series against the nationally ranked Arkansas Razorbacks at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. The series begins with a 4:05 p.m. (ET) contest on Friday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Delaware State returns 15 letter winners, including seven players who started at least 30 games, from its 2010 squad. The Hornets were 13-36 overall and 8-10 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) last season.

Arkansas is ranked 24th in two major preseason polls after posting a 43-21 overall record in 2010.

FAMU women's basketball team celebrates after a big victory

There was a bit of a celebration in the locker room of the Florida A&M women's basketball team at the Lawson Center. And, it had nothing to do with the fact that the Rattlers are now in sole possession of third place in the MEAC.

The postgame merriment Monday night was spurred by the Rattlers reaching a team goal for the first time in a conference game when they defeated Delaware State University 68-46. The 46 points allowed was the cause for celebration.

Holding conference opponents to 55 or fewer points is one of the team's goals set by coach LeDawn Gibson, but FAMU has not been able to do so against a conference opponent until Monday night.

FAMU men win seventh straight game at home

Simply put — there is no place like home for the Florida A&M men's basketball team.

Amin Stevens scored 16 points and the Rattlers fought off a late surge from Delaware State University for a 69-63 victory to complete a four-game home stretch without a loss at the Lawson Center. The Rattlers improved to 10-1 at home and extended their consecutive win streak to seven on their home floor.

Delaware State Hornets name Blount football coach

Delaware State University today named Kermit Blount head football coach. Blount spent 17 seasons coaching Winston-Salem State before resigning in November 2009. Blount went 91-87-3 at the North Carolina university, from which he graduated in 1980.

The Virginia native won his 90th career game in 2008 when the Rams beat Delaware State 27-26.

Blount replaces Al Lavan, who after taking over in 2004 wound up as the third-winningest coach in Delaware State history with a record of 41-36 and guided the Hornets to the MEAC championship (10-2 overall, 8-0 MEAC) and its first appearance in the Division I-AA playoffs in 2007.

DSU names new football head coach

The Delaware State Hornets have a new football coach to lead them in the 2011 season. Kermit Blount replaces Al Lavan whose contract was not renewed after this past season.

Blount is a North Carolina native. He comes to the Dover campus after 16 years as the head football coach for Winston-Salem State University. His resume there includes two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championships and a total of three CIAA Championship game appearances. He's also had teams in the Pioneer Bowl on two occasions.

“Coach Blount has proven he knows how to guide student-athletes to championship-level seasons as well as accomplish high standards of academic success,” Dr. Harry Williams, DSU President said. “The Search Committee is to be commended for its diligence in reviewing the candidates, in engaging in earnest deliberations and arriving at its recommendation.”

Hampton University beats Delaware State 70-66 in OT

HAMPTON, VA - It was Darrion Pellum's party, but Wesley Dunning had a fine time, too.

Pellum, Hampton University's junior guard and leading scorer, had a game-high 28 points while Dunning, a reserve sophomore swingman, scored all six of his points in overtime as the Pirates held off Delaware State 70-66 on Saturday to move into second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Dunning, who had a total of 36 points and averaged 8.7 minutes in the Pirates' first 20 games, was called upon when starting forward Charles Funches, who had eight points and 10 rebounds, rolled his right ankle with seven minutes left in regulation. Dunning opened overtime by ...

Pirates win, move to 2nd in MEAC

HAMPTON, VA – The Hampton University men’s basketball team needed an extra five minutes to beat Delaware State on Saturday evening, taking a 70-66 overtime victory at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (16-5, 6-2 MEAC) outscored the Hornets 13-9 in the overtime period. Sophomore forward Wesley Dunning scored the team’s first six overtime points, and junior guard Christopher Tolson hit all four of his free throws down the stretch.

Getting defensive

It was a game only a coach could truly love. Hampton's women's basketball team, allowing Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents just 48 points per game this season, gave up a season-low 29 to Delaware State on Saturday in a 52-29 win. The Hornets made just six of 39 field-goal attempts, which translates into a shooting percentage of 15.4.

In the first half, the numbers were 3-of-24 (12.5 percent). Seventeen of Delaware State's points came from the free-throw line. An ugly game?  "It depends on how you look at it," Hampton coach David Six said. "They made six field goals. Were they playing that badly, or we were playing good defense?"

Clemson Cruises Past Delaware State, 76-41

Jerai Grant scored 15 points to lead a balanced Clemson attack Monday night as the Tigers cruised past Delaware State 76-41.

Clemson Tigers crush Delaware State Hornets

Grant scored 15 while also dishing out five assists while Milton Jennings added 11 points and nine rebounds.
Delaware State trailed 12-11 with 12 minutes left in the first half before the Tigers responded with an 18-0 run over the next five minutes of play.

“It was a really good win for our guys. I thought we played really efficient basketball," head coach Brad Brownell said afterwards. "I talked to our team about playing with basketball sureness tonight—making the extra pass, sharing the ball, being strong, meeting passes, and limiting turnovers.

"We were facing a team that plays a bunch of different defenses and tries to make you get out of rhythm. They go trap at different times. I think our guys showed good poise.”

Wood lifts NC State past Delaware State 72-70

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Scott Wood's putback with 2.1 seconds left lifted North Carolina State past Delaware State 72-70 on Wednesday night.

Richard Howell scored a career-high 16 points, C.J. Leslie had 15 and DeShawn Painter added a career-high 14 for the Wolfpack (7-4). They led by 13 late in the first half but needed some drama to hold off the pesky Hornets. Casey Walker scored 20 points and hit four 3-pointers for Delaware State (4-6), and his free throw with 37.2 seconds left tied it at 70.

Wolfpack escapes Delaware State upset

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Scott Wood picked the right time to hit his first basket. Wood's putback with 2.1 seconds left gave N.C. State a 72-70 win over Delaware State on Wednesday night at the RBC Center. Wood was 0-for-6 before he grabbed a missed 3-pointer from Ryan Harrow about eight feet from the basket and coolly dropped in the game-winning shot.

Delaware State's last gasp, a halfcourt shot by Jay Threatt, bounced off the front of the rim and harmlessly to the floor. N.C. State got a career-best 16 points from Richard Howell and 15 from forward C.J. Leslie and 14 from DeShawn Painter against the undersized Hornets.

Although the 9-0 University of Pittsburgh men’s basketball team has yet to face a Big East opponent, head coach Jamie Dixon stressed that the nonconference schedule is not to be overlooked.

“I don’t think there is anything easy about our schedule,” Dixon said. “Just because we’re beating teams by a large margin doesn’t mean they’re easy. It means we played well.”

Finney: In Lavan, Delaware State cuts loose a man who put Hornets back together

We live in a stinky world where we only care about the "W."
It is easy to sympathize with Al Lavan, who discovered he was fired as coach of Delaware State's football team on Thursday morning. That's because Lavan has poured his heart and soul into turning the Hornets into a consistent contender in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference since he took over the football program back in 2004.

In fact, he was originally supposed to be the coach -- the first major hire by then-university president Dr. Allen Sessoms -- who would spearhead the Hornets' move to Division I-A football, where Sessoms harbored dreams of playing the Notre Dames, Floridas and Penn States of the world at a new 30,000-plus seat stadium in Dover.

Upon his hiring, Dr. Hallie Gregory, who was then DSU's athletic director, said, "[Lavan's] got a lot of NFL and Division I experience. With his background...

Delaware State Releases Head Football Coach

DOVER, Del. - Delaware State University Athletics Director Derek Carter announced December 2, 2010 that, effective immediately, Al Lavan will not be retained in the capacity of head football coach.

The DSU athletics director said after three consecutive losing seasons, "it is time for a change." Carter added that current defensive coordinator Rayford Petty has been appointed as the team's interim head coach.

"While we can note that there have been some successes during the Lavan era - most notably the 2007 conference championship - the team has not been as competitive following that accomplishment as we believe it should have been," Carter said.

The Al Lavan era included a 63-6 loss at Michigan on Oct 17, 2009, before 106,304 fans. In order to play the Michigan "money game" for $550,000, DSU forfeited a MEAC scheduled league game against North Carolina A&T-- for a rare two defeat day.
"While we hope to build on what we have seen is possible for the Hornet football program, presently we have determined that we need to move the team in a new direction," the DSU athletic director said. "We thank Coach Lavan for the dedication he has exhibited over these seven years."

Lavan ends his DSU tenure with a record of 41-36. His best coaching season took place in 2007 when he led DSU to a championship 8-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference record (10-2 overall), which earned the team its first-ever post-season appearance in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Over the last three seasons under Lavan, the Hornets had a combined record of 12-20, which included the recently concluded 2010 season record of 3-8.

Carter said a national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

Delaware State Hornets football: Lavan shocked by firing

Lavan ends DSU era with 41-36 record
DOVER, DE -- Over the past seven seasons, Al Lavan took Delaware State University's football team to heights it had never known. But the depths of the past three seasons cost Lavan his job Thursday when athletic director Derek Carter announced the head coach had been fired.

"It is time for a change," Carter said. "It's hard anytime you have to make these decisions, but you have to look at the big picture in trying to make the right decision."

Lavan said the move surprised him. "It was not on my mind at all," Lavan said. "I heard it [Thursday] morning for first time. It was unexpected."

Delaware State Ends Howard Bison Misery 53-43

Howard University Bison ends season 1-10, 0-8 in MEAC

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- All-MEAC receiver Justin Wilson has frustrated opposing secondaries throughout the season. After piling up 217 yards on nine receptions and four touchdowns -- three in the second quarter -- in a record-setting performance Saturday afternoon, you can add the Howard defenders to the list of the tormented.

Wilson set the Delaware State single-season record for receptions and quarterback Anthony Glaud passed for a season-high 351 yards and four touchdowns in his final collegiate game as the Hornets rolled to a 53-43 win over the Bison in the season finale on Saturday.

Larrone Moore's 86-yard kickoff return for a touchdown started the scoreboard humming for the Hornets after they fell behind 9-0 in the first quarter. They led 29-16 at halftime and 53-29 in the fourth quarter after Wilson's fourth touchdown. All six of the Hornets touchdowns came on drives lasting less than two minutes. The 53 points marked their highest scoring output of the season.

HOWARD FALLS TO DELAWARE STATE IN SHOOTOUT

Washington, DC—November 20---Delaware State spotted Howard a 9-0 lead and then reeled off 23 straight points in the second quarter to go on to a 53-43 win in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Greene Stadium. It was the regular season finale for both teams.

The Bison (1-10 overall, 0-8 in the MEAC) came out strong, taking advantage of a Hornets turnover when Theodore Graham, IV picked off an Anthony Glaud pass and returned it 26 yards for a TD. The ensuing PAT was missed but Howard led, 6-0 at the 10:20 mark.

Branche runs wild as NSU cruises to easy home win

NORFOLK, VA - After his second touchdown run, running back DeAngelo Branche placed his hands on his hips and straightened his back, stretching his lungs for air. His 15-yard score down the right sideline with 11:38 to play in the second quarter was his second consecutive run. Earlier in the drive, he'd carried three straight times, including a 10-yard run that featured a cutback from one side of the field to the other.

But before Branche, chest still heaving, took a break and a seat alongside the rest of the skill players, he paced in front of the offensive line's bench, bumping fists with the five men that led the way. "You know we don't get the glory," left tackle Kendall Noble said. "It shows he appreciates what we're doing for him."

Branche Leads Senior Day Victory over Delaware State

The Spartans ended their last home game of the season in style as they beat the Delaware State Hornets 31-21 at Dick Price Stadium.

Emotions were running high with the game against the Hornets being Senior Day. The Spartans have 20 seniors on the roster with 10 of them starting in the game and many of them had an impact in the victory.

NSU's offense was dominated by running the ball with senior DeAngelo Branche having a career-high 212 rushing yards on 30 carries. He also eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Three of his runs were touchdowns and he was relentless every time he got the ball. His last carry was the most crucial being a 40-yard touchdown run putting the game away for the Spartans. Branche wasn't the only running back playing well as senior Donovan Cotton had 13 carries for 72 yards and one catch for 21 yards.

Hurry-up offense too much for DSU

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Delaware State football team hasn't matched up particularly well with any opponent this season, but its depth chart made Saturday's visit to Norfolk State seem like a destined defeat.

The Hornets, with just four healthy defensive linemen, faced a Spartans offense with a rugged runner and strong offensive line that had just installed a hurry-up offense. Delaware State was rushed all over by the Spartans, getting outgained 310-54 on the ground in a 31-21 road loss.

Today's MEAC Football Reviews

Howard at Bethune-Cookman

1 p.m. at Municipal Stadium, Daytona Beach, Fla. Records: Bison 1-8, 0-6 MEAC; Wildcats 9-0, 6-0. RADIO: WELE 1380 AM (Daytona)

Emerging stars: Even though Howard's defense has allowed more than 50 points in three of its past four games, the Bison have received outstanding performances from its younger defensive players. Freshman safety Cameron Alston, the reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rookie of the week, had nine tackles, recovered a fumble and returned a blocked field goal 37 yards for a touchdown in a 54-14 loss to South Carolina State. Sophomore linebacker Kurt Mangum II had 13 tackles, including three for a loss, and a sack.

Delaware State at Norfolk State

Delaware State (2-7, 1-5) at Norfolk State (4-5, 3-4), 1 p.m., Dick Price Stadium, 102.1 FM; 91.1 FM (Norfolk); WWTX-1290, WDOV-1410 (Dover)

Ever since getting Norfolk State's season back on track, Sherron Childress admits he's been thinking about today. The tight end, one of the Spartans' most emotional players, is one of 20 NSU seniors likely playing their final home game today.

"I've been thinking about it all week," Childress said. "Since the start of the week, I've been thinking one more home game. I've played a lot of games here... one more time at Dick Price Stadium."

Childress has already been through a spectrum of results at home this season. He wept on the field after a close loss to Florida A&M three weeks ago. Last week, during a 35-27 win over Morgan State, he celebrated his first catch since September, and his first touchdown of the season.

Hampton at Florida A&M

Florida A&M vs. Hampton, 3 p.m: Hampton (5-4, 4-2 MEAC); FAMU (6-3, 5-1 MEAC); Internet Live TV: FAMCAST, Radio: 96.1 FM.

There is no hope of winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship for Hampton. That chance was dashed by three consecutive losses, including a heartbreaking five-point loss to undefeated Bethune-Cookman last weekend.

But today, the Pirates could do severe damage to the plans that Florida A&M (6-3, 5-1 MEAC) has to run the table and force a possible three-way tie for the conference title. Hampton (5-4, 4-2) did it last season and coach Donovan Rose is looking for a repeat performance.

What Rose has been telling his players amounts to forgetting that they've not won a game since escaping with a 7-6 victory over Norfolk State. Only a two-touchdown loss to Old Dominion was at a wider margin than the setback to the Wildcats.

North Carolina Central at Savannah State

SSU (0-9) faces North Carolina Central (3-6) at 2 p.m. at Memorial Stadium; Radio: WHCJ 90.3 FM (Savannah)

Sheldon Barnes hoped to earn some playing time this season, but the freshman never expected to become Savannah State's workhorse.

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound running back from Hinesville's Bradwell Institute leads SSU with 440 yards and three touchdowns on 98 carries.

Senior running back Justin Babb has not played since suffering a leg injury Sept. 18 against Bethune-Cookman. Filling in for Babb has been Barnes.

Delaware State Hornets basketball: Drilled in Jackson way of play, young team getting first test

Dover, DE - Basketball fanatics who like to see 100 points or more go up on the scoreboard probably should avoid Delaware State's Memorial Hall this winter. That's because, in typical Greg Jackson style, Delaware State's men's basketball team will attempt to wear its opponents down with stifling defense, especially considering that nine of its 15 players are underclassmen.

DSU will tip off its 2010-11 season at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Washington Adventist in a nonconference game. Jackson, entering his 11th season as Hornets coach, will try to mold his young team to play with his defensive philosophy.

Del. St. Hornets to Kick Off Basketball Season

Dover, Del. - Delaware State tips off the 2010-11 men's basketball season against NCAA Division II Washington Adventist (formerly Columbia Union) of Takoma Park, Md., tomorrow evening (Nov. 13). Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

The Hornets return eight letter winners from their 2009-10 squad, which posted an overall record of 17-12. DSU was second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) final regular season standings with an 11-5 mark in league play last season. Washington Adventist was 6-18 during the 2010-11 season. DSU fizzles after fast start against S.C. State

QB Malcolm Long
DOVER — Delaware State’s football team got off to a strong start Saturday afternoon, but things went south quickly. Two-time reigning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion South Carolina State put up 24 unanswered points between the second and third quarters and went on to defeat the Hornets 38-21 before a crowd of 2,130 at Alumni Stadium.

Antwanne Kerr pulled down a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Malcolm Long for South Carolina State (6-2 overall, 4-1 MEAC) to tie the game at 7-7 with 5:09 remaining in the second quarter.

Williams shakes off three interceptions, rallies Morgan State past Delaware State, 34-24

Morgan State quarterback Delonte Williams had already thrown three interceptions, two of which resulted in Delaware State touchdowns, when he calmly walked into the huddle with just over three minutes left in the game. Williams said that even though the Bears were down by three, they'd be just fine.

The redshirt freshman then directed an 85-yard drive, capped by his 34-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Hendrix with 20 seconds left. Sheldon Jacques added another touchdown on a 2-yard fumble return as time ran out to give Morgan State a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday before an announced 14,312 at Hughes Stadium.

Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley liked how his team overcame adversity on the last drive.

In seconds, DSU Hornets squanders victory

BALTIMORE, MD -- Delaware State has struggled all season when it comes to stopping the opponent in the fourth quarter. Saturday saw that problem reach a new extreme. With time winding down, Morgan State overcame a fourth-and-10 from its own 15-yard line and rallied for 13 points in the final 20 seconds to pull off a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.

"That's why you have to play for every snap that's required in a football game," DSU head coach Al Lavan said. "It's not a mystery as to what happened. It's very clear as to what happened -- we didn't make enough plays when we were given the opportunity to."

A&T loses lead and 10th straight game

DOVER, DE -- Through a winless football season, Delaware State University could count on one offensive weapon from week to week: running back Jaashawn Jones.

On Saturday, Jones led the Hornets with 144 yards on 30 carries. More importantly, he drew enough attention from N.C. A&T's defense to open up big plays for the Hornets' other weapons. The result was a 31-26 homecoming win for the Hornets in front of 4,131 fans at Alumni Stadium. DSU (1-5, 1-3 MEAC) had seven plays of 20 yards or more, six of which came through the air.

DSU Earns First Win of the Season

Bethune-Cookman breaks it open early to romp to fifth straight victory

DAYTONA BEACH — Androse Bell rushed for two touchdowns and Matt Johnson accounted for two scores to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 47-24 win over Delaware State on Saturday. The Wildcats (5-0, 3-0 MEAC) are 5-0 for the fifth time in their 85-year history and first since 2002.

Bell opened the scoring with 4:23 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run. He added a 3-yard run near the end of the first half to put B-CU ahead 27-2. B-CU is 5-0 after rout on homecoming

DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- After Bethune-Cookman and Delaware State players prayed on the field together, B-CU coach Brian Jenkins gave DSU coach Al Lavan a big hug. The postgame proceedings sure were a lot different than the last time Jenkins' Wildcats played at Municipal Stadium. This time he got to walk off the field with a big smile on his face.

Two weeks ago, he suffered from dehydration and was carried away on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital. This time he got to celebrate the victory with his players. "I'm proud of the guys and thankful for the fans and always proud of my administration and our president," a beaming Jenkins said. "Right now, it's great to be a Wildcat."

After disposing of the Hornets 47-24 before a homecoming crowd of 10,151 on Saturday, the Wildcats are 5-0 for the first time since 2002.

Coastal Carolina tops Delaware State for its first victory of season

CONWAY, SC -- There will be no talk around the Coastal Carolina football program this week about early season struggles or missed opportunities. There will be no need to scavenge for positives or search for ways to explain a season careening off path. Not this week, at least. The Chanticleers played nothing like a team mired in a winless slump - and everything like a squad eager to prove it is better than it had showed through the first three weeks.

The Chants shook the demons of the last three weeks - thoroughly and impressively - and started the process of righting their season with a 34-14 win over visiting Delaware State before an announced crowd of 9,218 at Brooks Stadium.
