Morgan State suffered through atrocious foul shooting (7-for-19), unforced turnovers (17 in all) and a 14-point second half Wednesday, but the Bears still managed to pull out a 42-39 victory over Delaware State at Hill Field House on Wednesday night.
The victory, on Senior Night, moved Morgan (10-3) within a half-game of first-place Bethune-Cookman (11-3) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with three games to play. It was the Bears' fifth straight win in February and the 100th of the Todd Bozeman era at Morgan.
"You want to do it more efficiently, like we practice it, but I'll take the win," Bozeman said.
BALTIMORE -- Delaware State missed two potential game-tying 3-point shots in the last eight seconds, falling 42-39 to Morgan State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.
Desi Washington fired off a 3-point shot that rattled inside the rim before coming out with eight seconds left to play.
Morgan State rebounded the miss, and the Hornets fouled Justin Black with 6.7 seconds remaining. Black missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving DSU another chance with 3.8 seconds left. Washington took the inbounds pass, but misfired on a long 3-point try as time expired.
For Reggie Holmes, father might prove to know best in this situation, too.
After finishing his career as Morgan State's all-time leading scorer with 2,051 points last season, Holmes ended up going overseas to play in Morocco. His father, Mark, thought Reggie should have tried something else instead.
"He wanted me to go to the D-League from the jump," Holmes said. "I was like, 'Nah!' and he said, 'You're grown now.' "
With things not going to his full liking overseas, Holmes, 23, has decided to give his dad's suggestion a shot. Holmes will make his D-League debut for the Erie BayHawks in their 7 p.m. game today against the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-18) at Tullio Arena. OK, Dad, he'll give this a shot.
The Erie BayHawks are the NBA Development League Affiliate of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Toronto Raptors. The NBA Development League is the official minor league of the NBA.

BALTIMORE, Md. – Kyle O'Quinn scored 24 points to help lead the Norfolk State Spartans to a 76-74 upset victory over the Morgan State Bears Saturday afternoon in an ESPNU nationally televised game. Rob Hampton tallied 19 points for Norfolk State (6-13, 4-3), which got 15 points from Pendarvis Williams and 11 points from Aleek Pauline.
DeWayne Jackson poured in a team-high 19 points in the loss for Morgan State (9-9, 5-2), who suffered its first conference home loss since falling to South Carolina State 71-68 on February 15, 2010; Coincidentally, that game was also during an ESPNU televised matchup at Hill Field House.
BALTIMORE, Md. – Kyle O’Quinn scored a game-high 24 points to lead four Spartans in double figures, and Norfolk State extended its winning streak to four games with a 76-74 win over two-time defending MEAC champion Morgan State on Saturday at Hill Field House.
Rob Hampton added 19 points, Pendarvis Williams had 15 and Aleek Pauline 11 for NSU (6-13, 4-3 MEAC), which broke a four-game losing streak against the Bears (9-9, 5-2) and improved to 3-0 in ESPNU-televised games this year.
BALTIMORE, Md.- Brittany Noel scored a game-high 16 points, while Kyla Rollins added 13 points to help Morgan State to a 64-60 victory over visiting Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game at Hill Field House. The win was the Lady Bears' seventh straight over Norfolk State.
Noel, who shot 4-of-8 from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range, also recorded a game-high four steals in the victory. Rollins, who was playing in just her second game as a Lady Bear, notched a game-high nine rebounds in her home debut, falling shy of a double-double for the second consecutive game.
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Norfolk State women’s basketball team got oh-so-close, but numerous free throws by Morgan State allowed the Bears to take a 64-60 win over the Spartans Saturday afternoon at Talmadge Hill Field House.
NSU tied the score with as few as five minutes left in the game, but the Spartans were unable to convert on several chances late in the half as the Bears held on. The Spartans fell to 8-9 overall and 1-6 in the MEAC, while the Bears improved to 11-8, 5-2.
Sophomore Batavia Owens and junior Sarah Daily led the balanced NSU scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while Daily and sophomore Marian Brooks tied for the team lead with seven rebounds.
DOVER, Del. – Jay Threat hit two free throws and Casey Walker drained a 3-pointer in the final moments to help Delaware State snap the Bears' 3-game winning streak with a 70-65 victory Saturday night before a packed crowd at Memorial Hall.
The Bears (8-8, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) hadn't lost to Delaware State since a 56-53 overtime setback on March 9, 2007 at the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament, during Todd Bozeman's first year at the helm for Morgan State. From there, they went on to win three MEAC regular season titles, two MEAC tournament titles and two NCAA tournament appearances.
The loss also marked the first conference road loss suffered by the Bears since losing to Hampton on Feb. 23, 2009.
DOVER, DE -- Trevor Welcher had been the only player on the Delaware State men's basketball team who remembered what it felt like to defeat two-time defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Morgan State.
That last happened March 9, 2007, in the conference tournament.
Welcher now has plenty of company in what had been an exclusive club after freshman forward Casey Walker drained a pivotal 3-pointer with 34 seconds remaining to spark Delaware State to a dramatic 60-55 triumph over the Bears on Saturday.
DOVER, DE -- Things can't get much more frustrating for coach Ed Davis and his Delaware State women's basketball team. The Hornets, who went more than nine minutes without scoring in the first half against Morgan State on Saturday, clawed their way back to within three points with 2:08 left.
That was as close as Delaware State would get as critical turnovers burned the Hornets down the stretch in a 51-44 loss to the Bears in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game. Davis, whose team suffered its third consecutive loss to fall to 5-12 overall, 1-4 in the MEAC, was left searching for answers.
BALTIMORE, Md. -- Kevin Thompson recorded his seventh double-double of the season by halftime, and finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds to help lead Morgan State to a 75-62 home victory against Beltway rival Howard on Saturday.
Aric Brooks matched his season-high by scoring 17 points, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free throw line with four assists. With the win the Bears improved to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The win also improved Todd Bozeman's record to 39-7 (.848) inside the confines of Hill Field House.
“Every win in Division I is a good win, especially a conference win,” said Morgan State coach Todd Bozemen. “Starting off 2-0 in the conference is a good thing, we just want to take it one game at a time.”
Baltimore, MD—January 8---Mike Phillips poured in a game- and career-high 25 points and Dadrian Collins contributed 14, but it was not enough to offset the depth as Morgan State downed Howard, 75-62 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Hill Fieldhouse.
It appeared as though Phillips would single handedly lead the Bison to victory when he scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. But the Bears (6-7 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC) parlayed the power of Kevin Thompson and Ameer Ali, who combined for 18 points and 14 rebounds and their bench into a 47-33 halftime lead.
The undermanned Bison (2-12 overall, 0-2 in the MEAC) battled the defending champs despite foul trouble. Morgan State Coach Todd Bozeman went to his bench early and often and it paid dividends.

The Opening Tip
Morgan State, the 2010 MEAC champions, will take on Louisville on Monday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. at the KFC Yumi! Center in Louisville, Ky. MSU 4-5 will look to rebound from a 97-55 non-conference loss at No. 5 Syracuse on Dec. 20 at the Carrier Dome. Louisville dropped Western Kentucky 114-82 on Wednesday night at the E.A. Diddle Arena to improve to 10-1. Monday night's game will mark the third meeting between the teams, Louisville holds a 2-0 advantage.
THE STORY: Fresh off a dominating performance in their first road game, No. 25 Louisville returns home for another tuneup before the schedule gets much tougher. The Cardinals will try not to overlook Morgan State with a visit from No. 14 Kentucky scheduled for Friday and the Big East slate starting next week. Rick Pitino’s team has impressed all season with its ability to get out and run off pressure defense and shoot 3-pointers, a style that plays well with a young team and a 10-man rotation.
BALTIMORE, MD — After struggling in the red zone all day, Hampton finally figured out a surefire way to the end zone late in Saturday's game against host Morgan State.
Switch to hyper-speed. Trailing by a point late in the fourth quarter, the Pirates drove 78 yards in 56 seconds, taking the lead for good on a 23-yard pass from David Legree to Javaris Brown with 46.4 seconds left in a 21-16 win.
"We practice 2-minutes [drills] all the time," Pirates coach Donovan Rose said. "I said, 'Make sure you stay poised.' But we got the ball to the sidelines, and I was just glad to see them do that because all of our losses have basically been down to the end like this. Our offense had to win it, and they did it."
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Pirates of Hampton University closed out the 2010 season on the road against the Bears of Morgan State University at Hughes Stadium with a come-from-behind 21-16 victory.
Hampton closed out the season with a 6-5 overall record and a 5-3 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), while the Bears finished 4-7 and 3-5 in the MEAC. The Pirates snapped a four-game losing streak in handing Morgan State its fourth straight defeat.
The Pirates led in all stats at the half, except the one that counted the most: the score. Hampton trailed 9-3 at half after an 81-yard punt return touchdown by Winfred Diggs and a 36-yard field goal by Kemar Scarlett.
BALTIMORE, MD — South Carolina State's offense made the most of what little time they had on the field. FCS No. 15 South Carolina State had the ball for just under 24 minutes, but the Bulldogs used several big plays on both sides of the ball to hand Morgan State a 32-10 loss last night in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Hughes Stadium.
The Bulldogs showed why they are ranked second in total offense in the MEAC. South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) piled up eight plays of over 20 yards, and the defense forced a fumble, an interception, a safety, and held the Bears offense to only 154 yards even though Morgan State ran 59 plays and had the ball for 36:47.
The Ravens aren't the only Baltimore football team playing on national television Nov. 11 -- Morgan State will be on ESPNU when it hosts No. 15 South Carolina State. The Bears (4-5, 3-3 MEAC) are coming off a 37-25 loss Nov. 6 at Norfolk State while he Bulldogs (7-2, 5-1 MEAC) beat Howard, 54-14, in their Senior Day game.
South Carolina State leads the all-time series between the schools, 28-5-1. Morgan State's last victory during the series was a 23-12 upset in Orangeburg, S.C., in 2002, Donald Hill Eley's first year as head coach.
Nov. 11's game marks the 100th since Hill-Eley came to Morgan State. Now in his ninth year leading the program, Hill-Eley has a 46-53 record, which makes him the program's third-winningest coach behind Eddie P. Hurt and Earl C. Banks.
BALTIMORE, MD - No. 14 South Carolina State came into Thursday night's game with Morgan State ranked second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in offense. The Bears got a good look at why the Bulldogs are so good. Morgan State couldn't stop a South Carolina State offense that made numerous big plays throughout the game at Hughes Stadium. The Bulldogs came up with a number of long gains that helped them to a 32-10 victory over the Bears.
The game was close early; the Bulldogs had a 10-7 lead early in the second quarter. But South Carolina State (8-2, 6-1) broke it open by scoring 22 of the final 25 points to take command and win its fourth straight game.
Morgan State quarterback Delonte Williams had already thrown three interceptions, two of which resulted in Delaware State touchdowns, when he calmly walked into the huddle with just over three minutes left in the game. Williams said that even though the Bears were down by three, they'd be just fine.
The redshirt freshman then directed an 85-yard drive, capped by his 34-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Hendrix with 20 seconds left. Sheldon Jacques added another touchdown on a 2-yard fumble return as time ran out to give Morgan State a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game Saturday before an announced 14,312 at Hughes Stadium.
Morgan State coach Donald Hill-Eley liked how his team overcame adversity on the last drive.
BALTIMORE, MD -- Delaware State has struggled all season when it comes to stopping the opponent in the fourth quarter. Saturday saw that problem reach a new extreme. With time winding down, Morgan State overcame a fourth-and-10 from its own 15-yard line and rallied for 13 points in the final 20 seconds to pull off a 34-24 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game.
"That's why you have to play for every snap that's required in a football game," DSU head coach Al Lavan said. "It's not a mystery as to what happened. It's very clear as to what happened -- we didn't make enough plays when we were given the opportunity to."

Morgan State scored its first two touchdowns of the season off two turnovers in the first half to beat Howard, 20-3, on Saturday in the 40th annual New York Urban League Football Classic in East Rutherford, N.J. More than 34,160 attended the first college football game at the New Meadowlands Stadium.
Morgan State had yet to score a touchdown of any kind in three games, including a 14-7 opening win over Bowie State, which it won with four field goals and a safety. But that streak ended with 10 minutes 52 seconds left in the second quarter when Donovan Dickerson hit Chuka Okakpu with a 16-yard touchdown pass, giving the Bears (2-2, 1-1 Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference) a 10-0 lead.
Reshaude Miller picked off Howard's Casey Council, returning it 89 yards for a touchdown to put Morgan State ahead by 17. The interception and score was Miller's first of his career.
George Steinbrenner was probably smiling down over the New Meadowlands Stadium Saturday.
The scrumptious smells of tailgating - everything from burgers to jumbo shrimp - in the parking lot led to thousands packing the new stadium to see Morgan State blast Howard University, 20-3, in the 39th annual New York Urban League Football Classic.
The Football Classic was the brainchild of Steinbrenner and legendary Grambling State coach Eddie Robinson, who created the annual game as a charity for disadvantaged students.
The Football Classic debuted at Yankee Stadium in 1971 and was played there till 1986, before changing venues to Giants Stadium. As legend has it, sustained damage to Yankee Stadium's field one year prompted the change. But the move wasn't a bad thing for the Football Classic, as it added the popular tradition of tailgating to the annual event.
College Park, MD - Before Maryland's demolition of an inferior opponent was even complete Saturday night, focus in College Park had already shifted to a quarterback situation that becomes more intriguing by the week.
Starting quarterback Jamarr Robinson threw two touchdown passes in a 62-3 rout of Morgan State, helping the Terrapins pile up more points than they had in 35 years. But Robinson was replaced in the second quarter by backup Danny O'Brien, who wowed coaches and fans alike by throwing three touchdowns in the first four pass attempts of his career. Maryland's coaches had planned to play both quarterbacks, much like they did in the season-opening victory against Navy.
But the combination of O'Brien's impressive showing and Robinson's tendency to miss some open receivers Saturday adds uncertainty to the quarterback position as the team prepares for what should be a difficult game at West Virginia next Saturday.
The University of Maryland’s 17-14 Labor Day win over Navy leaves Terrapin fans optimistic a successful start to the season signifies the revived team’s ability to play competitive football and hold its own in a talented conference.
Maryland defensive back Kenny Tate and defensive lineman Joe Vellano were awarded Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for their noteworthy roles in Monday’s win, but fans are already focusing on the future.
After upsetting Navy, led by Heisman trophy candidate Ricky Dobbs, Saturday’s home game against Morgan State (1-0) -- the first meeting between the two schools -- is predicted to be an old-fashioned beat-down. However, Maryland’s shocking losses last season, including to Middle Tennessee State, make a win tricky to guarantee.
Many of the problems that hindered Morgan State's offense last season carried over Saturday in its season opener against Division II Bowie State.
The defense, however, showed vast improvement, forcing five turnovers, and paved the way for a 14-7 victory before an announced 7,419 at Hughes Stadium. The Bears will have little time to savor the win as they must get ready to play Saturday at Maryland for the first time in program history.
"We have a lot of new faces on the defense," coach Donald Hill-Eley "They played well together against a team that had a game to play before us. They looked sharp. Our defense had some three-and-outs and we held them until we could get something going on offense."
After three separate recruiting campaigns over the span of nearly five years, Morgan State football coach Donald Hill-Eley finally has his man. Now, running back Jourdan Brooks is out to prove the wait was worth it. Once considered by many to be Ray Rice's heir apparent at Rutgers, the redshirt junior transferred to Morgan during this past offseason in search of a starting job. Hill was happy to oblige.
"He finally came on the third try," said Hill-Eley, who twice recruited Brooks out of Seneca Valley High as a linebacker. Running back, however, is where Brooks made his mark with the Scarlet Knights, racking up nearly 800 yards and 10 touchdowns in his two seasons in the Big East, including three 100-yard games.
2010 preseason All-MEAC first team senior defensive back Darren McKhan
Following a promising start to the 2009 season in which Morgan State won five of its first six games, the Bears stumbled down the stretch to a 6-5 record. The fourth-place Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finish is nearly the same conclusion predicted for the 2010 season; preseason polls tab the Bears to finish fifth.
This year’s squad will look fairly different after the departures of five starters on both offense and defense. The three most significant losses include starting quarterback Carlton Jackson, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year George Howard, and All-MEAC first-team defender Justin Lawrence. Devan James, the team’s leading rusher who totaled 639 yards, also moved on.
Cueing a voice-over introduction, Donal Ware bobs his head while punching computer keys and adjusting a microphone. It takes only a second for him to slip into a high-pitched, rapid-fire radio voice where sentences pour from his mouth. "Two more weeks before the start of the college football season," he says. "Thanks for joining me on another edition of 'From the Press Box to Press Row.'"
Ware, 35, sits in a high-back chair in a studio office in his Fuquay-Varina home. His equipment rests on a custom-made wooden bar top, a fitting place for someone whose preoccupation is talking about sports. In Ware's case, it's black college sports. His radio program celebrates its fifth anniversary this week, a major milestone for a niche show that focuses mostly on sports news involving historically black colleges and universities.
The one-hour show airs in Raleigh every Saturday on St. Augustine's College's WAUG station and is syndicated nationally on 30 stations, airing in such major markets as Washington and San Francisco. "I'm not saying that we've made it," Ware says, "but we've come a long way."
Former Morgan State University track star Dakari Taylor-Watson was recently named a Fulbright scholar and will be heading to Terengganu, Malaysia, for 10 months next January to teach English to secondary school students.
Taylor-Watson, who earned a degree in biology from MSU in 2009, was chosen by the international educational exchange program. The program is sponsored by the State Department based on academic merit and leadership potential to study and teach abroad.

The 23-year-old told the AFRO that he will also volunteer in a hospital or clinic while in Malaysia, and has plans of applying to medical school when he returns to the United States. As for spending nearly a year away in a foreign country, it’s not something Watson hasn’t experienced before. He moved to Paris for three weeks as an exchange student when he was 10, not long after his mother, Aisya Taylor-Watson, died of cancer. Taylor-Watson believes his mother’s spirit travels with him everywhere he goes.
Bears face challenging early-season schedule before starting goal of reaching MEAC championship.
The Morgan State football team faces a daunting schedule in the coming season, including traveling to College Park to face Maryland for the first time and a trip to distant North Dakota State in back-to-back games. And that's before the Bears open their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule against Howard in East Rutherford, N.J., in one of the first games at the new Giants Stadium — an experience the players won't soon forget.
But the Bears are focusing all their attention on their first game of the season, against Bowie State on Sept. 4, knowing they can't dismiss a single opponent if they are to reach the MEAC championship. "I'm looking forward to [playing in Giants Stadium], but it all starts with the first game," junior tight end Lamont Bryant said Sunday at the team's media day at Hughes Stadium." We can't look over the first game. We have to start from that game and take it one game at a time."
Three years ago Larry Bastfield couldn’t wait to get away from home for college. Today, the former Towson Catholic standout couldn’t be happier to be back. A second-team Baltimore Sun All-Metro selection in 2008, Bastfield signed with Toledo in the fall of 2007 and completed his sophomore season with the Rockets in the spring. When Toledo coach Gene Cross left the university in March, however, Bastfield decided to head home to Baltimore and finish out his college career at Morgan State.
“It’s for the better,” said Bastfield, who is already taking classes this summer at Morgan. “It really hit me when I came home. I was really ready to come back when I was in Toledo. I was ready for a better situation and ready for the next step.” Bastfield’s college career got off to a rocky start before he had even enrolled at Toledo. Stan Joplin, the longtime Rockets coach who recruited him, was fired after the 2007-08 season. Bastfield stuck with his commitment and played two years for Cross.
