No surprise, Morgan State routs Norfolk Lady Spartans

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 11, 2008)-It took Morgan State a little longer to get going than head coach Donald Beasley would have liked, but in the end his sixth-seeded Lady Bears had an 86-65 victory over No. 11 Norfolk State on Tuesday evening in the opening of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, held at the RBC Center.

Phylicia Jones recorded her first collegiate double-double, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds and scoring a career-high 14 points, while Corin Adams and Jasmine Sellers added 14 and 12 points, respectively for the Lady Bears.

With the victory, Morgan State improved to 19-10 on the season, thus setting the school record for victories on the Division I level, surpassing the previous mark of 18 wins, which they recorded last season. It was also the second consecutive year that Morgan State has won its first tournament game and the first time that’s happened since 1996-2000 when the Lady Bears won four-straight tournament openers.

Hampton Lady Pirates defeat rival Norfolk State, 76-52

HAMPTON, Va. – In the 74th meeting between the Hampton University Lady Pirates and the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State University, the Lady Pirates defeated NSU 82-61 in Hampton’s Convocation Center on Saturday night.

The Lady Pirates, 14-12 overall and 7-6 in the MEAC, led the Spartans, 5-19 overall and 1-12 in the MEAC, by 26 at the half, 54-28.

“We had great momentum heading into halftime and I told the girls that in the second half we had to come out and play with that same intensity,” said HU head coach Walter Mebane.

The Lady Pirates, who lead the all-time series against the Spartans 40-33, went on 19-0 run after spotting NSU a 3-0 lead at the outset of the game, taking a 19-3 lead with 16:14 to play on a Mikki Clayton jumper. But the Lady Spartans would battle back with a 7-0 run of their own to narrow their deficit to 19-10 with 14:08 on the clock. That was about as close as NSU would get after that.

Delaware State Lady Hornets get solid play from bench

NORFOLK, Va. -- Every game that teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play brings them one step closer to the grand finale of the season: the conference tournament. On Saturday afternoon, during the first game of his team's last road trip of the regular season, Coach Ed Davis had a big chance to tweak the little things -- like the play of his bench -- which, in the end, could help the Hornets to a second consecutive tournament championship.

With a highly productive performance from their reserves, the Hornets shot a season-high 57 percent from the floor to breeze by Norfolk State, 81-55, at Echols Hall. In improving its overall record to over .500 for the first time this season, DSU (13-12, 8-3 MEAC) scored its most points since putting up 87 against Howard in the 2005-06 season.

Chesapeake woman bowled over at Norfolk State

CHESAPEAKE, VA - Cathryn Myrick's infectious giggle and can't-miss tongue piercing make it hard to believe she's 30. But what really slays folks: More than twelve years after graduating from Oscar Smith High School, where she played nothing more than the viola, bass and clarinet, Myrick is a college athlete.

Her tuition and books are paid for at Norfolk State, thanks to a powerful left handed hook. Meet Cathryn Myrick - college bowler.

First question: "Norfolk State has a bowling team?" Indeed. The Spartans are among the best in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, headed to the conference championships next month for the first time in their five-year history. Myrick, recruited from the lanes at AMF Indian River, is a big reason why.

Norfolk State Lady Spartans scores first MEAC win--over Howard Bison

NORFOLK, VA - After 40 minutes of basketball and with just six players available, no one could have blamed the Norfolk State women if Howard was the fresher team in overtime Monday night. Instead, the Spartans were quicker to loose balls and played with renewed energy. "We just wanted it real bad and it showed out there," guard Ebony Gibbs said.

Gibbs hit two free throws with 5.5 seconds left to force overtime and NSU took over, rolling to its first MEAC win 94-88 at Echols Hall.

Hampton women too hot for the NSU Spartans, win 68-51

NORFOLK -Rachel Butler scored 14 points and Quanneisha Perry added 13 to lead the Hampton University women over Norfolk State 68-51 at Echols Hall. The Pirates (12-7, 6-1 MEAC) shot 60 percent in the second half to pull away. Norfolk State (3-14, 0-7) was led by Raychele Payne with 18 points. Genor Dalton and Ebony Gibbs added 10 each for the Spartans, who are playing with just seven players on the roster.
