Mallett rushes for 160 Yards as UAPB Golden Lions Earn First SWAC Victory

Entering the season, Arkansas-Pine Bluff coach and defensive coordinator Monte Coleman said he wanted his defense to be one of the best in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. On Saturday, they played like they were, as the Golden Lions forced six turnovers and sacked Mississippi Valley State quarterback Paul Roberts four times in a 34-0 victory at Golden Lion Stadium on Senior Day. Martell Mallett gained 160 yards and scored two touchdowns on 24 carries in the victory.

“Valley threw the ball against Jackson State over 90 percent of the time, (in a 58-44 victory last week), so my thing was to try to make them run the football,” Coleman said. “They still came out and threw the football. My thing was to take away their best suit.” While the Golden Lions weren’t able to force Valley to run the football, they were able to limit the effectiveness of the Delta Devils aerial attack. Roberts completed only 13-of-35 pass attempts for 123 yards. And though UAPB used a varied rush of only three or four defenders, the Golden Lions were able to pressure Roberts for four sacks and three interceptions. Coleman said he only called one blitz on the game.

UAPB Golden Lions take a step back in defeat

UAPB Head Football Coach Monte Coleman has had a difficult first season with the Golden Lions.

Forget the step forward the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions seemed to be taking the past two weeks. In losing to Grambling State 28-7 Saturday before a crowd of 15,500 at Little Rock’s War Memorial Stadium, the Golden Lions did an about-face and marched squarely in the wrong direction. UAPB fumbled the ball four times, with three of those fumbles being recovered by Grambling State. Golden Lions quarterbacks Gvona Turner and Jonathan Moore had three interceptions combined while completing only 8 of 23 passes.

This two weeks after the Golden Lions scored 42 points against Division II Lincoln in their first victory of the season and one week after UAPB took Southwestern Athletic Conference power Southern University of Baton Rouge to overtime in a 31-24 loss. “We had opportunities to win this game. We’ve been jinxed with that bug all year, turning the football over with fumbles and interceptions,” said UAPB’s Monte Coleman, who has yet to win a SWAC game in his first season as head coach.

Southern’s depth in secondary bodes well for ’09

Their starting left corner back missed last week’s home finale, and their starting free safety is on the shelf for good. But the Southern Jaguars’ black-and-blue secondary may have uncovered something over the last two months: silver lining. So many reserves have played in the secondary this season that their transition to starting roles might not be as rough next fall.

“I think it just shows the depth we have on our football team,” SU coach Pete Richardson said. “I think our assistants do an outstanding job of preparation and keeping the young ones focused — to make sure they’re focused on what they have to do. Anything can happen. When they got an opportunity to play, I think they stepped up and did that.”

Indeed. A pulled groin muscle forced left corner Mike Williams to sit out Saturday’s 31-24 double-overtime victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

UAPB Coleman finally gets to celebrate

PINE BLUFF, AR — Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman is an emotional guy, and he had trouble holding it in Saturday. Coleman earned his first victory as a head coach as UAPB beat Lincoln University of Missouri 42-0 before a homecoming crowd of 14,852 at Golden Lion Stadium in Pine Bluff. UAPB (1-7) had 394 yards of total offense and held Lincoln (2-6 ), an NCAA Division II school from Jefferson City, Mo., to seven first downs and 181 yards of offense.

“I’m not looking at their record or what division they’re in. We got beat early on by some Division II schools. It’s all relative,” Coleman said. “We needed a victory, and we came out and got us a victory.” Martell Mallett had 146 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns on 15 carries to lead UAPB. Mickey Dean, Jeremy Morrow and Kenneth Esaw also had rushing touchdowns. The sixth touchdown of the day, doubling UAPB’s total from the entire season, came on a 91-yard interception return by James Harrell with 59 seconds left.

UAPB Lions gain 88 yards in loss to PVAMU Panthers

Pine Bluff, AR -- Entering the season, UAPB coach Monte Coleman expected his offense to be led by a powerful rushing attack. With veterans Martell Mallett and Mickey Dean returning to the Golden Lions’ offensive backfield, Coleman had visions of his team gaining victories by grinding the football on the ground. But, through seven games this season, these expectations have gone largely unfulfilled. Behind a young and suspect offensive line, UAPB’s offense ranks last in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in three of several offensive categories.

These offensive woes only got worse Saturday, as the Golden Lions (0-7, 0-3 SWAC) gained only 88 yards of total offense in a 15-0 loss to Prairie View A&M (6-1, 3-1). In the loss, UAPB allowed six sacks and have now allowed 30 sacks in seven games this season. “Unfortunately, our line is young,” Coleman said. “We want to take the ball out of any quarterbacks hands and give it to those two guys (Mallett and Dean), unfortunately we haven’t been able to do that all year.

“When we lose, we lose as a team,” Coleman continued. “I’m not going to blame it on the line. Do we have some shortcomings on the line? Absolutely. Do we have shortcomings at linebacker? Absolutely. We have some break downs as a team. One week it’s this one. One week it’s that one, and that’s the reason we’re 0-7 right now.”

UAPB coach apologizes for comments

PINE BLUFF - The Southwestern Athletic Conference won't come down hard on Monte Coleman after the first-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach publicly criticized game officials following UAPB's 21-10 loss to Jackson State last Saturday. SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said in a statement Wednesday that the conference would formally reprimand Coleman, adding that "with all athletic competitions, emotions do run high, but that does not condone the comments of Coach Coleman."

Coleman opened his postgame press session Saturday by criticizing referee Anthony Johnson for charging him a time-out during the fourth quarter. "Absolutely horrible,"Coleman said after the game. "Anthony Johnson, he needs to get a zero for this game. He wanted to cost me a time-out because I asked him a question." Coleman also attacked the crew for what he believed was an unnecessary roughing the passer penalty.

"This is the worst officiated game I've ever been a part of in my life,"Coleman said. "They should not get paid. They should be suspended. Every last one of them."

Moral victory prizes plentiful for Coleman, UAPB Lions

About 20 minutes after his team lost for the fifth straight time to start the season, Monte Coleman walked slowly into the team’s weight room inside the J. Thomas May Field House. He approached a pair of reporters and, trying to keep a tense moment light, said: “Another consolation prize, huh?” Consolation prizes have come in bunches for Coleman in his first season as coach of the Golden Lions, but perhaps no more so than during Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Alabama A&M in both teams’ Southwestern Conference opener.

UAPB senior QB Jonathan Moore is nursing a thumb injury that has impacted performance of the Lion's offense.

UAPB played what Coleman said was its best game of the season. Its defense held the conference’s third best offense to less than 300 total yards and intercepted three passes, which tied the highest total in a game this season. The Golden Lion offense, while it struggled to sustain drives throughout the game, was able to score three times after a defensive or special teams play provided them with good field position. But as this season moves into October and the halfway point of Coleman’s first season, he’s still looking for his first win — and those consolation prizes have become harder to accept.

Alcorn outduels UAPB 13-3 to give Jones 1st victory

LORMAN, MS — Alcorn State quarterback Tim Buckley threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Arceneaux in the second quarter Thursday night, and the Braves hammered out a 13-3 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The win, which didn't count in the Southwestern Athletic Conference standings, was the first for new Braves coach Ernest Jones and moved Alcorn to 1-3 on the season.

Alcorn's Taylor Richardson kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter and another from the same distance in the fourth to give the Braves some breathing room on a night they were outgained 216-205 in total yardage.UAPB (0-4) scored in the first quarter on Carlos Reyes' 25-yard field goal. Buckley completed 9 of 18 passes for 118 yards with no interceptions. Arceneaux caught six balls for 79 yards.

Alcorn Braves face UA-Pine Bluff on ESPNU

LORMAN, MS — Ernest Jones is ready to get his first win as an Alcorn State head coach. So what better way to get it than under the lights at Jack Spinks Stadium with a television audience watching? That’s exactly the scenario Jones hopes plays out when the Braves (0-3) take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-3) in a primetime matchup at 6:30 p.m.(CST). The game will take place on ESPNU, which is available to subscribers of Dish Network and DirecTV.

“It’s great to have an ESPN football game right here at our own stadium in front of our alumni and fans,” Jones said. “It will be a great atmosphere with both teams looking for their first win. I’m looking for my first win as a coach and to get it on ESPN live for all our recruits is going to be awesome.” After a promising first game that saw them drop a close 34-28 decision to Southeastern Louisiana, the Braves have fallen on hard times the past two games — a 29-0 loss to Grambling (which did not count in the SWAC standings) followed by a 65-0 thrashing against Troy.

University of Central Arkansas Claws UAPB 41-17

LITTLE ROCK, AR — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff had No. 19 University of Central Arkansas on its heels in the first half. But the Bears asserted themselves in the second half and downed the Golden Lions, 41-17, in the first Claw and Paw Classic at War Memorial Stadium.

UAPB (0-3) was stingy on defense limiting the Bears to 37 yards and sacking vaunted UCA quarterback Nathan Brown twice, but the Golden Lions couldn't muster anything until late in the first quarter when Martell Mallett got things going late in the quarter with a 66-yard run that set up a Carlos Reyes 34-yard field goal at the 12:55 mark in the second to put UAPB up 3-0. UCA (3-0) responded with a seven-play, 71-yard drive that Marquez Branson ended with a 12-yard touchdown reception from Nathan Brown.

Div. II Henderson State routs UAPB Golden Lions, 34-0

Henderson State took on its second NCAA Division I (FCS) opponent in as many weeks, but this to time the Reddies were the dominate team as Henderson rolled to a 34-0 beating of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Saturday at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium. The Reddies recorded only the second win over a Division I (FCS) opponent, with the first being a 41-35 win over Hal Mumme’s Southeastern Louisiana team in 2003.

The third largest crowd in Henderson State history of 9,537 witnessed Roch Charpentier complete 25 of 49 passes for 352 yards including touchdown tosses of 19 yards to Sean Stennis and 69 yards to Garett Canning. The Reddies struggled with the ground game totaling just 116 yards with Bernard Palmer carrying the ball 15 times for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

The Reddie defense had no mercy on UAPB quarterback Gvona Turner sacking the freshman nine times. Junior defensive end Colrett Boyd led the Reddie defense with three sacks while Demarcus Robinson totaled eight tackles. The Reddie defense limited the Lions to just 217 yards of total offense. Palmer capped the first scoring drive of the game with a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter.

The five-play 26-yard scoring drive included a 17-yard pass from Charpentier to senior wideout Stennis. Stennis was on the receiving end of another pass from Charpentier at the beginning of the second period after Darnei Bates recovered a UAPB fumble. Henderson State took the lead into halftime, 14-0.

Henderson State took the opening kickoff of the third quarter looking to extend the lead. The Reddies drove the ball 55 yards in 10 plays before Palmer extended the lead to 20-0 after a three yard touchdown run. After another costly UAPB turnover, the Reddies capitalized with a five play scoring drive, capped by the 62 yard Charpentier to Manning touchdown reception.

As UAPB tried to battle back as the fourth quarter began, the Reddies’ Michael Buse blocked a punt and took the ball the remaining 10 yards into the end zone, capping the HSU victory, 34-0. Henderson State totaled 468 yards of total offense while the defense forced four lost UAPB fumbles.

The Reddies return to action Saturday in Flourence, Alabama against #3 North Alabama.

The road doesn't get easier for the 0-2 Golden Lions as they face Southland power Central Arkansas in Little Rock at 6 pm on Saturday. The UCA Bears (2-0) are currently ranked #22 in the latest Division I FCS Polls and defeated Henderson State 38-14 on Aug. 28. UAPB has lost to two Division II Gulf South Conference teams by the combine scores of 7-55.

PINE BLUFF, AK — First-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman said he wanted to raise the profile of his football program, and so far he’s getting his wish. People in Arkansas have been talking about the Golden Lions this week, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

While not quite on par with Arkansas State beating Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, UAPB’s season-opening 21-7 home loss to Division II Arkansas-Monticello grabbed its fair share of attention. This was a program two years removed from playing in its conference championship game and starting the season with optimism to spare, only to fall to a bottom-rung Gulf South Conference program that had won six games in the past three seasons.

So the loss qualified as a shock, one that still stings as the Golden Lions prepare for a much more highly touted Gulf South opponent in Henderson State.

Weevils surprise UAPB Golden Lions

PINE BLUFF, AK — Is it too early to assume there’s more to the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils than previously thought? UAM’s 21-7 season opening victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday at Golden Lion Stadium in Pine Bluff suggests as much. The NCAA Division II Boll Weevils entered Saturday having won six games in the past three seasons, and were picked to finish last in the 11-team Gulf South Conference in a preseason poll. But that didn’t keep UAM from manhandling the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA ) Golden Lions offensively and defensively.

Sophomore quarterback Scott Buisson ran for 95 yards and a touchdown and added 193 passing yards and two touchdown passes for the Boll Weevils. “This ain’t a last-place team,” UAM Coach Gwaine Mathews said. “Defensively, I thought we had something to prove. I thought tonight, we did.” A defensive unit that surrendered more than 40 points per game in 2007 limited UAPB to 183 yards passing and intercepted Golden Lions quarterback Jonathan Moore three times.

PINE BLUFF, AK — Arkansas-Pine Bluff Coach Monte Coleman probably thought he had a pretty interesting sports history. It’s not every day a young man grows up with his eye on other sports, hardly plays high school football, never receives a recruiting letter and yet goes on to become a standout linebacker in college and, later, the NFL. Yet for all the odd little bumps and curves that led Coleman to stardom, he’s not the only member of the UAPB football program who has followed that path... at least up through college.

A preseason All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection who led UAPB with 122 tackles a year ago, senior linebacker Tim Turner is the unquestioned leader of the Golden Lions defense. His speed — Coleman said he can run a 4. 5-second 40-yard dash — and 6-1, 220-pound size fit the ideal college linebacker mold, enough so that the New York Giants had a scout in Pine Bluff last Friday to do some firsthand observation.

Let the Monte Coleman era begin. After struggling to a 4-7 finish last season the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions fired coach Mo Forte, and hired defensive coordinator Monte Coleman to right the ship of what has been one of the more prestigious programs in Arkansas state history. Coleman’s tenure officially starts tonight when the Golden Lions open the 2008 season against the University of Arkansas at Monticello at 6 p.m.

“Feels like Christmas,” Coleman said of his head coaching debut. “Can’t wait for the next morning.” Coleman hopes to give a present to all Golden Lion fans by beating the Boll Weevils. And while UAM is a Division-II opponent, Coleman acknowledged that a victory won’t come easy for his squad.

Staying home, UAPB Moore now a starter

PINE BLUFF, AR — A lot of teenage boys can’t wait to get away from home after graduating from high school. All it took for Arkansas-Pine Bluff quarterback Jonathan Moore to stay was a chance to play football. Moore, who prepped at nearby Dollarway High School, didn’t move far to land at UAPB. Of course, he didn’t have much of a choice. For Moore, it was pretty much UAPB or bust when it came to football.

Moore spent his junior year of high school splitting time with an underclassman while quarterbacking a Wishbone offense. While his strong arm netted the usual letters of interest from SEC schools, when it came time for scholarship offers, it came down to UAPB, Alcorn State and little else. “I got a couple letters from LSU, but no offers,” Moore said. “That’s pretty much it.” Moore’s time at UAPB has mirrored his time at Dollarway: Even when he’s been at his best, there’s always been someone either just above him or right behind him.

Inside UAPB Camp

The excitement is back at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. This is the first year for head coach Monte Coleman and you can see the difference in practice. Defensively, the Golden Lions should be solid with Stewart Franks, Kevin Thornton, Jared Dorn, Ledarius Anthony, and Tim Turner all returning from last season.

Offensively, returning starters include Jonathon Moore at quarterback, Mickey Dean, and Martell Mallet at the running back spot. The Offensive line should be solid and there are high expectations for the upcoming season.

Defense starts, offense finishes in UAPB scrimmage

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff offense apparently didn’t get the message that head coach Monte Coleman’s first scrimmage at the school started at 6:15 p.m. The Golden Lion defense set the tone by only giving up one touchdown in the first half. Then the offense responded to a short field for most of the second half, taking the Saturday scrimmage 37-6.

“It was probably jitters, and I had jitters, too,” Coleman said. “I walked on the field, and it felt like the Super Bowl. My stomach was turning, so it was probably jitters.”

The defense gained confidence right from the start. Junior transfer Larry Jenkins intercepted Jonathan Moore on the first play of the scrimmage and returned the ball 35 yards for the touchdown.

“That’s something that we have not done since I’ve been here and that’s score on defense,” Coleman said.

UAPB Report: Lions have bad luck with WRs

In less than two weeks, the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions went from looking for a secondary receiver to complement senior Bruce Peters to looking for a secondary receiver, period. Senior Ryan Watley was lost for the season last week after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in practice. Then Tuesday, the NCAA informed Golden Lions offensive coordinator / academic liaison Jonathan Cannon that freshman wideout Gionni Harris would be ineligible for the 2008 season.

Harris, who helped lead Fayetteville to the Class 7 A state title in 2007, was considered one of the Golden Lions' quicker receiving prospects. Coach Monte Coleman said one of the test scores used to admit Harris to the university came from an exam not taken on one of the national testing days. Harris can remain as a student at UAPB and can have four years of eligibility starting next season if he meets the school's academic requirements.

The Monte Coleman era has begun at the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Defensively, the Lions return 8 starters that could be the reason they go back to Birmingham, AL for the SWAC championship. Offensively, senior Jonathon Moore will lead the Lions this season. They're offensive line averages over 350 pounds and that's good news for running backs Martell Mallet and Mickey Dean.
