TSU loads up with four receivers

NASHVILLE, Tennessee  --  With both of Tennessee State’s leading returning receivers being tight ends, the Tigers went looking for wide receivers in the recruiting season.

Four of TSU’s 24 signees are wide receivers, and they will get the chance to make an impact early in their careers, coach Rod Reed said.

The two leading returning pass catchers are tight ends A.C. Leonard (51 catches, 733 yards, six TDs) and Joe Bowens (28 catches, 348 yards, two TDs).

“We feel like we’ve got to be able to get some separation on the outside and get bigger because we’re a play-action team, and those big targets are good to have out there,” Reed said. “We’ve already got two inside guys with A.C. and Joe, so we needed a little bit of length on the outside.”

The Tigers signed 6-foot-3 Dantwaun O’Neal (DeLand, Fla.), 6-3 Quindell Cousin from Blackman, 6-4 Christopher Sanders-McCollum (Creekside, Ga.) and 6-4 Devante Miller, a transfer from College of DuPage (Ill.).

“Not only did we want to get some size out there to get some separation with the defensive backs, but as much as we run the ball, we also need some big guys who can block,” Reed said. “We feel like all of the receivers we signed can do that.”

Tiger Football Signs 23 On National Signing Day

NASHVILLE, TENN. - Tennessee State University head football coach Rod Reed announced on Wednesday that 23 student-athletes signed their National Letter of Intent to join the football program in 2013.

"We targeted a lot of guys and in the end, we got a lot of the top guys that we wanted at the top positions," said Reed.

With TSU finishing the season 8-3, the most wins in an 11 game season since 2001, it made a big difference in recruiting

"It’s easy to go into a school and tell a kid that you are 8-3 instead of 5-6," Reed said. "Kids pay attention to that and winning is important. We not only want to win the Ohio Valley Conference, but we want to win the National Championship. "

William Carey beats Xavier in matchup of NAIA top-10s

NEW ORLEANS — Xavier University of Louisiana led after the doubles matches, but William Carey rallied for a 6-3 victory Friday in a matchup of NAIA top-10 men's tennis teams.

The Gold Rush (1-2), ranked eighth, lost for the first time in two duals at the new XU Tennis Center, which opened in October. The Crusaders, ranked sixth, are 2-0.

Xavier led 2-1 after Loic Didavi and Kyle Montrel defeated Ricky Keppeler and Marthinius Visser 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Nikita Soifer and Viktor Svoboda beat Jody Claassen and Robin Semal 8-6 at No. 2, but the Gold Rush didn't score another point until the final completed match — Didavi's 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) decision against Claassen at No. 1 singles.

William Carey won three singles matches in straight sets. The only other XU player to win a set was freshman Kyle Montrel, who lost 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) to Keppeler at No. 3.

Xavier defaulted No. 3 doubles and No. 6 doubles. That will be a season-long occurrence because unexpected attrition reduced the Gold Rush roster of available players to five.

"It was a tough loss for us," XU coach Alan Green said. "We went toe-to-toe with the sixth-ranked team in the country. The match could've gone either way. I can see where we can make a lot of improvement."

Didavi avenged a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Claassen from their 2012 dual, which Xavier won 5-4. The Gold Rush and Crusaders will meet again April 5 in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Next for the XU men and women will be three duals apiece at Prairie View, Texas. They'll play Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. next Friday, Bethany (Kan.) at 1 p.m. on Feb. 16 and Oklahoma Baptist at 10 a.m. on Feb. 17. Bethany's men are ranked 10th in the NAIA, and Oklahoma Baptist's women are ranked 18th. Xavier's women are 13th.

High school football success doesn't always bring scholarships

Garner’s Kameron Smith, who was the CIAA
offensive football player of the year in 2012,
wasn’t a hot recruiting commodity when he
was a senior either. He signed with the
Naval Academy and later transferred to
Winston-Salem State. All Smith did was go
31-4 as a starter and throw for 7,540 yards
with an incredible 96 touchdown passes.
He also led the WSSU Rams to the D-II
National Championship game in 2012
and the semifinals in 2011.
RALEIGH, North Carolina  --  Leesville Road fielded one of the best high school football teams in the state in 2012, but you’d never guess how good they were judging by the interest shown to Pride players by college football recruiters.

The program has lost only two games in the past two years, but coach Chad Smothers doesn’t expect any of his players to sign national letters of intent Wednesday during the first day of the signing period.

Leesville and Garner were undefeated when they met in the quarterfinals of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4AA quarterfinals last season.

But the two schools have produced only two football scholarship seniors, Garner offensive lineman Anthony Galavotti, who is signing with Western Carolina, and Garner two-way star Terry Gilman, who is headed to Bridgewater (Va.) College.

Bridgewater is an NCAA Division II school that doesn’t offer football scholarships. “Ours are academic scholarships,” said Tim Leister, the Bridgewater sports information director.

Gilman’s play as a defensive end and tight end opened the door at Bridgewater, but his academics got him inside.

The same is true for Middle Creek quarterback David Salmon, who passed for 3,183 yards and 36 touchdowns last fall. He already has enrolled at Campbell University, which is a member of the NCAA Division I FCS, but as a member of the Pioneer League doesn’t give football scholarships.

Florida A&M Marching 100 absence costly

TALLAHASSEE, Florida  --  It’s costing Florida A&M University a significant amount of money to have the Marching 100 sitting on the sidelines. It’s just not clear exactly how much less revenue FAMU has generated as a result of the popular band serving an indefinite suspension in the aftermath of the Nov. 19, 2011 hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

Larry Robinson, FAMU’s interim president, told members of the Board of Trustees’ Budget and Finance Committee on Wednesday that in some cases, it’s easy to determine how much the band’s absence has cost the university. For example, he said, FAMU had to agree to a revised contract for last September’s Atlanta Classic football game, with FAMU’s guaranteed pay reduced by $150,000, from $400,000 to $250,000.

Attendance at the Florida Classic in November was almost half of what it normally is, and the university received about $150,000 less than it had in previous years.

Athletic Director Derek Horne does not attribute all of his financial woes to the absence of the band, but his department’s projected loss for the current fiscal year is now $2.2 million ...

NOTE:  If you are a lifelong Rattler fan or former Marching 100 member, you may want to burn yourself a CD of the 1952, 1964 and Super Bowl III performances of the '100rd.  This rare footage is priceless, and this was my first time viewing and hearing these performances of the 1950 and 1960 era, respectively.  Dr.  William P. Foster came to FAMU in 1946 from Tuskegee Institute, and this 1952 performance by the Marching 100 may be the earliest video recording in public circulation.

Amazing -- the precision in marching and the musicianship of this 132 piece all-male Marching 100.

For you Rattler history buffs,  the band size expanded to 250 strong around 1970; women became a part of the 100'rd in 1972; and future College Football Hall of Famer (2007), Coach William "Billy" Joe was a fullback/half back that played in Super Bowl III (January 12, 1969) with Joe Namath and the New York Jets.  Who knew then that this World Champion, Billy Joe would later become head football coach of the FAMU Rattlers (1994-2004) in a highly successful 33-year coaching career.

For those with a trained ear for music, notice how the counter-melodies in the FAMU Alma Mater and the Florida Song are missing.  The melodies -- carried by the baritone horn, french  horns, and tenor saxophones were created in 1969 by University arrangers Mr. Richard Power; and Mr. Lindsey B. Sarjeant, currently an associate professor at FAMU and who serves as director of jazz studies, director of jazz ensembles and arranger for the famous Marching “100” Band, symphonic band and jazz ensemble.  Back in 1971, Sarj had more musical talent and knowledge of music as a FAMU senior (music major), that most guys had receiving a Ph.D in music.  His brilliant arrangements took the 100'rd to a whole new level, especially when the band expanded to 430+ members.

The Gulf Coast Offense, the Marching 100, Earl Holmes, Quinn Gray, Lindsey B. Sarjeant, Dr. Shelby Chipman and many, many others -- they are all connected into this great institution -- the Florida A&M University.

Did I mention that Dr. Shelby Chipman, without question, should be named the next leader of the Florida A&M University Marching 100?  Dr. Chipman has ALL the qualities necessary to provide strong leadership, discipline, and teaching needed for the 2013 and beyond Marching 100 band program.  No doubt, FAMU adequately prepared Dr. Chipman for the tremendous task ahead in returning the Marching 100 program to its former glory years of 1946 - 2010.  You can trust Dr. Chipman with your daughter or son, and he will prepare them for a successful life.  Like you, I patiently await for this selection of Dr. Chipman to be announced.

The FAMU Marching 100 is more than a band.

Many thanks to dat03c for sharing this rare footage of the Marching 100 from 1952 and 1964; Josue Sway for the 1969 Super Bowl III performance; and TAPEMASTEROFFICIAL for the 1989 video. This was a real treat.

It's a great day to be a FAMU Rattler!

Signing Day: Comegy, Jackson State hits magic number of 19

JACKSON, Mississippi  --  Rick Comegy was halfway down the hallway at the T.B. Ellis Annex when he stopped, turned, and asked a coach, “How many?”

When informed that Jackson State had received 19 letters of intent Wednesday — better known as National Signing Day — matching the number of scholarships they had sent out earlier that morning, Comegy grinned, turned and headed for the office.

“Not bad,” he said.

JSU signed 19 to its 2013 recruiting class, a number that fell right in line with Comegy’s hope of between 18 and 20. More importantly, it filled some of the Tigers’ most glaring needs.

“That shows we’re going in the right direction and we’re going to make this thing happen,” Comegy said. “It’s a good class. It’s hard to measure sometimes, but I know we have some tough, hard-nosed kids in there.”

SWAC Notebook: Alcorn State land most of its targets

ASU Coach Jay Hopson is proving the naysayers 100% wrong!  The Braves may
have the best football recruiting class of Mississippi's FCS/Division II programs.
Only time will tell if Hopson is able to build a winner at Alcorn.

LORMAN, Mississippi  --  There was no tempering Alcorn State coach Jay Hopson’s enthusiasm over his 2013 signing class.

For Hopson, who led the Braves to a 4-7 record in his first season on The Reservation, the 26-member class was his first since taking over the program and signaled the latest step in his rebuilding effort.

“We think it’s a great class,” Hopson said. “(Mendenhall quarterback) Khaderal Hodge, we felt like was the No. 1 on our board. Haiden McCraney was our No. 1 kicker and we got him.

“We had guys on our list and we pretty much got everybody that we went after,” Hopson said. “There’s one or two that we missed on but for the most part, we have the guys we targeted and went after.”

Of the 26 to sign, 16 members of Alcorn’s class are from the Magnolia State, a point of emphasis for Hopson and his staff.

“That’s something that we’ll do,” Hopson said. “We have an emphasis on signing Mississippi kids.”

Jeffries paved the way

COACH WILLIE JEFFRIES
UNION, South Carolina  — Willie Jeffries is more than a legend, he’s a trailblazer, a role model and a pioneer who set the stage for many black men in the sports world. During a time when segregation was the law of the land, the former Union County resident broke down the racial barriers. He accepted a position at Wichita State University in 1979, becoming the first African-American head football coach to lead a NCAA Division I school.

Although it was a new concept for a black man to call shots, Jeffries said he had no trouble earning the respect of his peers and players.

“Most people in the world will treat you in accordance with the way you present yourself,” Jeffries said during an interview with the Union Daily Times in 2010. “When we went to play in Kansas, the people treated us royally. Those were great people. There were times in Kansas when there weren’t any black people at all, but when we went in to recruit they were very respectful and cordial.”

During his first collegiate head coaching assignment in 1973, Jeffries turned a floundering South Carolina State program around, going 50-13-4 in six seasons, before leaving for Wichita State. Five years after making his historic trek at Wichita State, Jeffries returned to the MEAC in 1984 as Head Coach at Howard University. After five years, Jeffries made his way back to South Carolina State, his alma mater, for a second tenure in 1989. In 2001, he retired from coaching after 29 years as the winningest coach in the school’s history.

'Whirlwind' experience lands Garvin as new SCSU basketball coach

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina  --  Murray Garvin described the previous 24 hours as a “whirlwind” experience.

On Wednesday, he spent the morning hours working with South Carolina State men’s basketball coach Tim Carter in preparation for Saturday’s matchup against Savannah State.

By the afternoon, Garvin went from associate assistant to the top man in charge following Carter’s resignation.

“Real off-guard,” said Garvin about the coaching change. “We were in preparation for Savannah State. Coach Carter was engaged...I didn’t see it coming.”

The surprises continued Thursday when he signed a contract from S.C. State Athletics Director Charlene Johnson keeping him as head coach through the 2013-14 season. The S.C. State sports information office confirmed the agreement with Johnson, who was unavailable for comment, but gave no details.

Davis chooses Morehouse Maroon Tigers

AIKEN, South Carolina   --  Aiken’s Robert Davis chose to sign with Morehouse College to play football on Wednesday, and he’s looking forward to playing college football for a very simple reason.

“The same thing that excited me (at Aiken): I just love football,” he said.

The defensive tackle will play the same position at Morehouse, located in Atlanta, and chose the school over Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Newberry and Presbyterian for academic reasons.

“I love the academics and their great business program,” he said.

Davis was hampered by injuries this season but was still a major contributor on the Hornets’ defense. Head coach Carey Johnson said Davis’ leadership in efforts on the field, in the weight room and in his studies have earned him high praise.

“Robert’s been a four-year starter whose hard work on the football field ... and in the classroom has been great for our football team,” Johnson said. “You want your kid to be just like him.”

Clark Atlanta Inks 23 Recruits on National Signing Day

ATLANTA, Georgia  --  Clark Atlanta University inked 23 high school recruits including 20 local standouts  from Georgia to National Letters of Intent on the first day of the college football National Signing Day February 6th, CAU Head Football Coach Kevin Weston announced Wednesday.

Offensively, CAU also added three offensive lineman, three running backs, two tight ends and a quarterback.

"My coaching staff's tireless efforts along with the cooperation of our university and athletic administrators have played a vital role in what we have been able to accomplish with this recruiting class,' Weston added.

While the Panthers were able to address some immediate needs, Weston intends to add a few more players at key positions for the 2013 season.

Keeping the faith: Northern’s Stewart signs with Elizabeth City State

HENDERSON, North Carolina  --  A highlight video on Youtube led to an on-campus workout. The workout led to a phone call on Tuesday.

That still didn’t prepare Northern Vance’s Benjamin Stewart for the golden fax that arrived Wednesday, signaling a scholarship offer to play football at Elizabeth City State.

“I never thought this was going to happen, but I didn’t take no for an answer,” said Stewart, a defensive back. “I just kept the faith.”

Stewart’s coach, Eric Watkins, expected the offer to come Tuesday night. It didn’t.

Watkins was surprised when he received the offer via fax early Wednesday morning.
“I was happy, joyful, because the kid deserves it,” said Watkins.

Elizabeth City State competes in the Division II CIAA. The Vikings have made the CIAA Championship Game each of the past two seasons, falling both times to Winston-Salem State, Watkins’ alma mater.

Lane College Jones lights up 49ers for 290 yards

JACKSON, Tennessee  --  Joe Flacco may have won the MVP award in the Super Bowl XLVII but, the Ravens wide receiver/return specialists Jacoby Jones had the better game.

Even Sports Illustrated seemed to think so as well, for they decided to place Jones on the cover of its magazine this week instead of Joe Cool.

But, we really shouldn’t be surprised with Joe Flacco winning the Super Bowl MVP.

Why? Because, we know the NFL is a quarterback driven league.

However, no one can deny the fact that Jones’ electrifying 108 yard kick-off return for a touchdown, which is a Super Bowl Record, was the most memorable play of the game.

Jones, in fact, had 290 all-purpose yards during the Super Bowl, which also is a new Super Bowl record for total yardage.

Along with his 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Jones also had a 56-yard touchdown catch over 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver, which was the longest play allowed by the 49ers’ defense this season.

Ram Ramblings: It's been a long week for WSSU Rams, Collins

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina  --   Coach Bobby Collins says this was one of the hardest weeks he’s had in his career.

It was a hard week because the Rams lost to Livingstone 75-72 on Saturday and instead of playing another game a couple of days later the Rams have had to wait a week to play again.

“It was an extremely hard week,” Collins said on Friday morning when reached at his office.

The 24th-ranked Rams are 16-4 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA’s Southern Division.

Collins, who is very competitive, knows that the best way to get over a loss is to get to the next game but that next game was seven days away.

The Rams will take on St. Augustine’s at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Gaines Center.

There won’t be any trouble in ...

Tennessee State Tigers Drop Govs in Overtime, 88-82

CLARKSVILLE, Tennessee  --  The Tennessee State men's basketball team escaped Clarksville, Tenn. with an 88-82 overtime victory over Austin Peay on Thursday night.

With the score tied at 65 with only five seconds to go in the game, APSU's Will Triggs stole the ball and passed it up ahead to Herdie Lawrence. Lawrence scored a layup, giving APSU a two-point lead.

On TSU's inbound play, the Tigers threw the ball down the court and Jordan Cyphers caught the pass and attempted a triple. The shot fell short of the rim, but right into the hands of Kellen Thornton. Thornton tipped the ball in the hoop with just tenths of a second remaining in the game to force overtime.

In the extra period, Patrick Miller scored nine points and led TSU (14-10, 8-3 OVC) to the six-point victory. Miller's dunk with 27 seconds left in the game made the score 86-77 and ended all hopes of a miracle by the Govs.

Miller ended the game with a team-high 25 points on 7-of-15 shooting. The guard also notched seven assists and four swipes.

Cyphers added 19 points while M.J. Rhett canned 18 and was 7-of-8 from the field.

The first half was a see-saw affair with neither side gaining much of an advantage over the other. In fact, there were 10 lead changes and six ties within the first 20 minutes of the game.

Cyphers and Thornton got the Tigers started by each canning a triple. However, a three from APSU's Travis Betran a minute later made the score 7-6 in favor of the home team.

Thornton finished the game with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

From that point, TSU went on a 6-0 run that was led by a pair of hoops from Robert Covington. His first was a strong two-handed slam that was set up by a Rhett steal.

Covington had 10 points and five boards in 17 minutes of action.

The Tiger run put TSU up 12-7 with 16:56 left in the first. The five-point lead would be the biggest point spread of the first period.

The Govs (5-19, 1-9 OVC) responded to the Tennessee State streak with a 9-1 run that featured a pair of back-to-back dunks from Chris Horton.

Again the Tigers came back to pull off another long run. This one had TSU pouring in 11 points compared to just four for the Govs. A jumper by Miller ended the string of TSU buckets and left the Tigers up 27-22 with 7:47 left in the opening stanza.

After Miller's hoop, neither side led by more than a field goal for the remainder of the first half, and a pair of free throws from Miller made the score 36 all heading into the break.

Miller ended the first half with a team-high ten points on 3-of-8 shooting and a steal. TSU swiped five balls during the first 20 minutes and caused nine APSU turnovers.

TSU came out strong to start the second half and led by five at 45-40 when Cyphers drained a triple with 17:25 to go.

The Tigers continued to lead throughout the frame and eventually went up by six when Miller converted on a layup with 9:47 left.

From that point, the Govs chipped away at the Tiger lead and eventually tied the score at 63. That basket set up the wild final two minutes that featured three ties and two lead changes.

TSU was outrebounded 41-36 during the game, but the Tigers shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) while the Govs were held to a 43.3 line (29-of-67).

The Tigers next travel to Murray State on Feb. 9 for a matchup against the defending OVC Champions. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen on the OVC Digital Network.

18 New Tigers Set to Join the Texas Southern Football Program

HOUSTON, Texas  --  The Texas Southern Tigers football program signed nine recruits to kick-off national signing day, with another nine student-athletes already on campus and ready to go.

Second year head coach Darrell Asberry says the program is heading in the right direction.

“We addressed our needs with this signing class,” Asberry said. “Our focus was to find offensive and defensive linemen, quarterbacks and a running back. We did that and more.”

Asberry says his top recruits include defensive lineman Aaron Hush and running back Daveonn Porter.
