ATLANTA, Georgia -- Clark Atlanta University inked 23 high school recruits including 20 local standouts from Georgia to National Letters of Intent on the first day of the college football National Signing Day February 6th, CAU Head Football Coach Kevin Weston announced Wednesday.
"We are very pleased with the quality of recruits we have signed and are equally ethusiastic about the number of student-athletes from the Atlanta area," said Weston. "All of these players have a special talent and the local impact will set the tone for a great game day experience within the community."
Weston's first recruiting class as the Panthers head coach is stacked on the defensive side of the ball with six defensive lineman up front, four linebackers and four defensive backs. This will no doubt add solid depth to a defensive unit that ranked No. 20 in total defense last season among other NCAA Division II schools and in the top five in four statisical categories including rushing defense, sacks, total defense and pass defense in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). Offensively, CAU also added three offensive lineman, three running backs, two tight ends and a quarterback.
"My coaching staff's tireless efforts along with the cooperation of our university and athletic administrators have played a vital role in what we have been able to accomplish with this recruiting class,' Weston added.
While the Panthers were able to address some immediate needs, Weston intends to add a few more players at key positions for the 2013 season.
