SWAC Notebook: Alcorn State land most of its targets
ASU Coach Jay Hopson is proving the naysayers 100% wrong! The Braves may
have the best football recruiting class of Mississippi's FCS/Division II programs.
Only time will tell if Hopson is able to build a winner at Alcorn.
LORMAN, Mississippi -- There was no tempering Alcorn State coach Jay Hopson’s enthusiasm over his 2013 signing class.
For Hopson, who led the Braves to a 4-7 record in his first season on The Reservation, the 26-member class was his first since taking over the program and signaled the latest step in his rebuilding effort.
“We think it’s a great class,” Hopson said. “(Mendenhall quarterback) Khaderal Hodge, we felt like was the No. 1 on our board. Haiden McCraney was our No. 1 kicker and we got him.
“We had guys on our list and we pretty much got everybody that we went after,” Hopson said. “There’s one or two that we missed on but for the most part, we have the guys we targeted and went after.”
Of the 26 to sign, 16 members of Alcorn’s class are from the Magnolia State, a point of emphasis for Hopson and his staff.
“That’s something that we’ll do,” Hopson said. “We have an emphasis on signing Mississippi kids.”
